Dan-dan hated to admit it, but he was almost too tired to show an appropriate level of concern for his wife's spiritual crisis. As she went on for what felt like hours, recounting her various dream-visions and symptoms, he sound himself holding onto the shaft of his oar as his sole means of remaining vertical. Both hands clutched at the wooden support, though they slowly sagged their way down almost halfway until his rear was jutting far back and his head was resting on his extended upper arms.
A few times he started and forced himself to pay close attention, but those were primarily due to the fact that he almost toppled over a few times. From the sounds of it, Kulap was having some kinda adverse reaction to the suffering caused by the war outside. Dan-dan listened somewhat closely to that part of the conversation, but even that failed to capture the sleepy fisherman's attention for long.
Dan-dan awoke to the sound of his own particularly loud yawn, just in time to catch his wife's words, "Come on Dan-Dan, lets get home." He quickly covered the sound with a loud yawn and stretch as he sat up from the cross-legged position that he figured he must have sunken into at some point previously. He waved a sleepy farewell to Hue, though his words were made indecipherable by his persisting yawn. The elderly guru of the Swamp merely smiled and waved in return, and the two started back towards their home.
"Sooooooo," he began, once they were out of earshot and on their way back through the regular-sized trees of the Swamp, "Do ya feel any better 'bout yer dreams?"

The shaman walked as the dawn's light made warm shadows on the ground. "Not really, I just feel that sumthin' is gonna happen. Huu said earlier that I'm more sensitive now since I died and came back to life, maybe now is why I can feel...this war. I dunno Dan-Dan being this "spirit talker" is complecated...then agian it was far worse fer Grandad." Kulap walked in the cool dawn morning. Butchie was already in the river hunting for breakfast, Kulap snuffled around for some fruit. She found an acai tree with the nourishing purple fruits. Munching on it she look around for leaf to scoop water with when she saw something on the ground. The shaman notice a dull red stain on a rock and plant. She sniffed it and took a taste. It had a metal twinge to it and Kulap new the taste...it was blood. Human blood.
"Dan-Dan I think we should follow this..." Kulap took off following the blood trail, using her ears and eyes to locate the souce. Pass an old water oak and willow was a group of bodies...four men were lying barely breathing. Dressed in green and gold. Kulap knew that these were outsides. Instict kicked and she showed her staff. "Who are you!" One man looked up his side was bleeding lightly the others looked uncouscious. "... I am Ru Xin, I am soldier if you can't tell, my men and I are injured. Ji Fen is badly wounded, I need help. There are four of us. Kai Ming and Dao Jin are the other too.." Ru stopped talked and looked pleadingly at Kulap.
"Please...We need help"

As they made their way across the Swamp, Dan-dan could actually feel his senses become just a little sharper with the increasing light. Despite his lack of adequate sleep, it seemed as though his body had resolved to stay awake. The weary fisherman was still tired of walking though, and his arms were getting a little tired. All along their trek, he'd been using his oar like a broom, exerting his bending through the paddle and sweeping aside the shallow pools and puddles that littered the swamp floor.
When Kulap unexpectedly found some bloodstained foliage, Dan-dan was fully alert. Even though he was fairly sure it was just some wounded creature that managed to escape the jaws of a catfish-gator, he sill kept his guard up and allowed his wife to follow the trail uncontested.
He was surprised, then, when the trail led them to a cluster of men lying at the base of a rather large tree. They'd apparently fashioned themselves a temporary camp with a crude and slightly toppled earthen dam to keep out the water. From the looks of things, and by the one soldier's own admission, they were injured. The scorch marks on some of their clothing hinted at firebenders, and the blood-soaked strips of cloth that had been hastily tied into bandages made Dan-dan wonder how they'd manage to make it so far into the swamp.
"Please...We need help" one of them pleaded.
Glancing at Kulap for a moment, Dan-dan only gave a nod and asked, "Can ya heal 'em here?"

"It's ok I think I can heal them." Kulap walked over and knelt towards Ru and poured some water on his wounds with a breath she began water heal the gashes. Ru eyes widened. "Your Waterbenders?" His voice incredious. Kulap nodded and tried to bandage Ji Fen, "Yew guys got yerself in a big mess I see, yew just keep still I'll make yer a litter for guy whos wounded the most. You guys can walk right?" Ru nodded and helped Dao Jin and Kai Ming up. Kulap began taking down some branches from a pin oak and weaved them with some willow vines and some bellweed vines aswell, making a makeshift Litter. "Dan-Dan yew me drag this guy back to our place." Kulap gently Layed Ji Fen on the litter and took end and looked at Ru Xin.
"Are you ready?" Ru nodded but looked at Kulap questionly." Who are you, and where are we excatly." Kulap blinked and totaly forgot about introducing herself "Oh Imma Kulap and that mah husband Dan-Dan, I'm a shaman in this swamp, Waterbenders setted here a long time ago." Ru looked a little confused but followed Kulap to her tree house

Dan-dan aided Kulap in the construction of the litter, and once the bed of vines andsticks was complete he helped lifted the soldier onto it. One of the other soldiers who'd faired been mostly healed lent him a hand, and even helped carry the litter as they started back so his comrade wasn't dragging through the mud.
The Earth Kingdom soldiers seemed pretty nervous, and Dan-dan couldn't really blame them when he considered their situation. The Swamp could be a frightening place, even for those who've lived there all their lives. However, Dan-dan merely remained quiet and smiled occasionally at the lost soldiers while Kulap spoke with the one ahead of him.
"How far are we from the edge of the swamp?" the soldier carrying the other end of the litter asked out of the blue. Dan-dan raised his eyebrows slightly and craned his neck to look at the man who had spoken.
"Huh?" he asked, almost by reflex since he hadn't been paying attention to him. However, even as he said that, his mind replayed the second half of the question that he'd heard, and he pieced together what he thought was the whole thing. "Oh, 'bout a day's travel by skiff... If ya got a bender, that is." He flashed a friendly smile, and that seemed to bring a bit of hope to the soldier.
"Thank the spirits," the other walking soldier sighed tiredly. Dan-dan glanced his way, and the soldier looked at him with a haggard expression. "We've been lost in here for three days now... It's a miracle Ji Fen's survived this long, but he seems to be getting worse." The soldier indicated the man on the litter and Dan-dan nodded gravely as he thought about the difficulty of surviving out in the wilds of the Swamp without the proper supplies.
"Don' worry," he said, "Mah wife should be able to patch him back up with somethin' from the village. That and we'll find ya somethin' to eat. Ya must be starvin' after all that time." The soldier clutched at his stomach at the mention of food, and Dan-dan could tell he'd hit on their second major concern. With a slight smile he added, "Not far now."

They finally reached the treehouse around early morning. Kulap looked at the rag-tag soldiers and gently place the litter on the ground. Now with an ample supply of water and her treehouse. Kulap can finally accomplish what she wanted to do.
"Sorry that I had to move ya all the way here. But I reckon, yew wouldn't last very long there. Yer buddy thar would have been snackies for a giant python. Or swamp wolves." Ru nodded and sat facing the river that flowed next to the treehouse.
"So you and your husbands are shamans right?" Kulap shook her head and climbed up the ramp. "Yer buddy, umm Ji Fen needs stay here for a little bit while I get the thread and needle. Water healin' will take a lot of energy with that guy. I might need to use tradtional methods with the lot o' yew. And Oh, no Dan-Dan is jest a fisherman, he doesn't have the ummmm "connection" to be a shaman, so I'm just the only one. I'll be back in a second and oh! Don't mind Butchie...he won't hurt you." Kulap began ransacking the house for healing items in the backroom. When Butchie emerged from the river. The soldiers gasped and started at the familar assecended the ramp.
The soldiers looked at one another as Kulap began to look for items. Dao Jin huffed and leaned back he was lightly burned with a twisted wrist but seem the least damaged of the group. "I don't like her Commander, what does she know of healing..she proably is going to sacifice us to her heathen gods." Dao Jin complained as he leaned agaist the water oak that served as a refuge for the Spirit Talker. Kai Ming wrinkled his nose, "I don't like her either she's half naked and her husband doesn't seem very bright." He said in low voice equal to Dao's the younger soldier chuckled lowly. "I bet her husband is her brother too." They both laughed like hog monkeys until Ji jumped in with a tone that surprise them both. "I wouldn't mock her, she seems to know what she's doing, not mention this swamp raidates energy of some sort...ughhh oww." Dao stopped his laughter and looked at Ji concered, "Hey man hold still ok?" Commander Ru Xin looked two and said, "She's back.."
Kulap came back holding two massive jars of salve and large aloe leaf. She passed by Dan-Dan and whispered. "I think this what the spirits are telling me husband, I think I really need to help them.."

As they arrived at the village, several other members of the tribe had started to approach the band of newcomers. Dan-dan waved at a few and called out calming words to let his kinfolk know that there was nothing to be alarmed at, though he could sense the Earth kingdom soldiers growing a little uneasy as more and more sets of eyes were trained upon them. The whole group pulled up near the base of the tree where Dan-dan and Kulap lived, and the soldier on the litter was gently lowered onto dry ground.
The fisherman started after Kulap for a moment, but she seemed fairly intent on her task and didn't even bother asking him for help, so he stopped at the base of the ramp and decided to wait for her with the soldiers. Dan-dan gave his wife's pet catfish-gator a scratch on the back with his toes as he waddled past, and then smiled back toward the soldiers.
He wasn't terribly surprised to see the group whispering among themselves. After all, they were in a strange new place, likely among people they never knew existed. However, he caught a few pieces of their exchange that didn't sound very friendly and it brought a frown to his face. Dan-dan gripped the shaft of his oar a little more tightly as he leaned a bit more of his weight onto it. Kulap started back down the ramp, laden with a few healing supplies and whispered to him, "I think this what the spirits are telling me husband, I think I really need to help them.."
"Jes' be careful," he whispered back, and followed her back toward the soldiers.

Kulap began mixing the salve need to treat the soldiers. She stirred the mixture and hum a old chant as she began to apply the mixture on Dao Jin's burns. Dao wrinkle his nose as the aloe-ey mixture as Kulap rubbed it on his arm.
She bandaged him and Kai Ming before moving on to Ru, when she finished Ru she took her thread and needle and begain working on Ji Fen, the soldier took a deep breath as Kulap worked on sowing up Ji's arm and applying copious amounts of aloe. Ji closed his eyes and let her work. She watered healed his badly burned leg, slowly making sure not to strain herself and put to much pressure.
After medicating the soliders especially Ji Fen. She gathered her supplies and deposited them up in the house she ran back down with bread and cheese for the soldiers. Most of them were were over joyed at the sight of food, exspecially Tapilk cheese and honey-bread. Ru Xin devoured a loaf quickly and so did Kai Ming. Dao Jin nibbled on it looking at Kulap with distaste, and Ji smiled as Kulap broke the bread into small peices and gave a little Ji, who thankfully could still chew and swallow.
"Ar'ight, now we need to get yew up into shelter tonight...Can one o'yew help me git up yer buddy in the house?" Dao Jin crossed his arms, but Ru was quick to assist Kulap with carrying Ji up the ramp. Everyone else followed, as the asscended and walked into the treehouse. "Do all your people live in the trees?" asked Ru as Kulap laided Ji on a cot in the back room. "Not really, only me an' Dan livin' the trees." Dao grumbled something and sat on a cushion as Kulap busied herself in the kitchen as she and he husband were baraged with questions. "How long have you lived here?" Asked Kai, "All mah life I reckon" Ru ask another one, "Are the people here friendly? Kulap made a rue in a sauce pan and added chalots and fresh herbs. "Yep friendliest folk in the world, jest make sure yew don't offend anyone and yew can git along great with them." Dao Jin frowned and looked Kulap with sourness and asked mockingly: "So is that man over there really your husband or your brother? Do yew swamp sluts really married your own dads?" Kulap stopped with her stew making and gave Dao a quick icy glare. Ru smacked Dao's head. "Watch yer self private!" Kulap reply was annoyed but polite. "I was orphaned when I was ten years old. Ma an' Pa died of sickeness because of the rain. I was raised primarly by mah Grandad, the former shaman and medium of the village. I take his place as heir. Dan-Dan was arranged to me as a child, Mulkat wanted a man that could care for me and respect me both as a spituralist and as woman. Only Dan-Dan fit the bill."
Dao didn't say anything else...Ru smiled and looked at Kulap, "Sorry about him, but what was your name again...Kulap? I must say it's a odd one. Does it mean anything?" Kulap brighted and said simply. "Rose...it's means rose or beautiful flower" Ru nodded and looked to Dan-Dan and Kulap. "It's a fine name shaman, you are fine person for taking us in we couldn't repay you with your kindness."

Dan-dan had to resist the urge to punch that Dao soldier in the face when he made a wise-crack about him being related to Kulap, and if the other man hadn't whacked him for it, things probably would have gotten violent. Instead, he merely settled for a deathly glare that promised impending pain for the ungrateful soldier... Kulap just healed his burns for Spirit's Sake!
When Kulap finished her brief recounting of her family history, Dan-dan took a moment to put a hand on her shoulder and lean in close to her ear. "We should find somewhere else for these men to stay," he whispered, "I'ma go talk with Huu or one o' the elders to see what we can do." At that point, Dan-dan glanced back at the soldiers and gave Dao yet another threatening glare. "Be safe..." Dan-dan kissed her on the cheek as he passed her by and started down the ramp of the tree-house in a swift canter.
He didn't have to go far, though, before he came across a handful of fellow villagers who'd gathered around the home to see what was happening. Several questions were called up to him as he descended, and most of them consisted of "Who are they?" and "What's going on?"
"S'alright," Dan-dan responded as he reached the end of the ramp. "They're Earth Kingdom soldiers that got lost. Mah wife patched 'em up, but we need a place for them to stay and rest."
"They dangerous?" asked a man Dan-dan recognized as a fellow fisherman.
"Don't think so," he replied. "But we should still keep an eye on 'em.... Have ya seen Huu around recently?"
"I think he's still out."
"Hmmm," Dan-dan pondered, "Then I'll see what space we got mahself. Tell everyone that everythin's fine and they don't gotta worry." The other fisherman nodded and Dan-dan started off toward the section of the village where they had a few huts designated for storage.

Pakpao and Baijeong with their husbands ran up to Dan-Dan as he scoped out the huts for rooms for the soldiers. “Hey Dan-Dan! Wait a minute! Yew gotta sec?” Asked Baijeong as she and Kinah ran up and looked at Dan-Dan with concern. “Dan-Dan I know yew and the Spirit-Talker mean well, but don’t yew think that yer inviting trouble? There outsiders Dan-Dan, they could be baaad news, whut if they start somethin’ here? I mean we got lil’ uns.” Kinah said warningly his xenophobia thick in his voice. Baijeong frowned and nodded to her husband. “And do yew think it’s wise to leave Kulap alone wit those men? I mean I do understand Kulap is a very powerful shaman and waterbender in her own right. But she’s all by her lonesome wit four woman-starved men. Yew ain’t afraid somethin’ bad is gonna happen to yer wife?” The couple looked worried and very xenophobic about the matter whilst Sunan and Pakpao, had other thoughts.
“Dan-Dan ignore those chickens, Kulap could wrestle with gods and live, I think she’ll be fine, if anything happens Butchie will eat ‘im alive anyway. However if yew need places I can take one in, Sunan and I have room. We owe the shaman a lot, she helps the village everyday, and we need to give somethin’ back.” Sunan agreed with Pakpao’s statement. “We’ll be happy to help, our house just has Pakpao me and lil’ Chau. We got plenty ‘o room!” Baijeong and Kinah looked at the two thunderstruck, without saying anything more. They left shaking their heads. Sunan huffed and shook his as well
“Fools, see if the Spirit-Talker will help you.” Murmured Sunan.
Meanwhile Kulap served the stew to the hungry men in the treehouse. Everyone seemed to enjoy the warm fish stew, except for Dao who didn’t seem interested at all. Kulap brought a bowl to Ji who fortunately could sit up and eat on his own without help. Kulap walked back to the kitchen and began grabbing a few herbs and mortar and pestle and started to grind them. Dao and Ru watched Kulap grind the herbs. Kai has taken a liking to Butchie and was scratching his chin. “He’s kinda cute once you get to know him.” Kai Ming chuckled as Butchie rolled on his side. Dao murmured to Ru in a low voice as Kulap hummed a wordless tune as she made her herbs
“She might be bad news, Commander, I don’t like her one bit. Woman like her should be watched. I don’t trust those witches who run around topless and naked. Hmph, she needs to be taught her place.” Dao muttered as Kulap hummed. Ru shook his head however he was worried for her men. “She seems like a good person, she saved our lives. Still, it’s always good to be on guard.” Dao walked outside and muttered as he walked down. “Women like her…shouldn’t be living. Too dangerous.”

Dan-dan's brow furrowed as he listened to the warnings of Baijeong and Kinah. He was a fairly trusting person by nature, and even though he'd all ready come to dislike that one soldier Dan-dan would never have thought anyone stupid enough to do what these two were suggesting. Sunan and Pakpao's words were a welcome distraction from that line of thought, and he gave them a thankful nod for offering their home as rooming.
"Thanks," he said to them, "Even just a little extra room would be fine fer the healthier ones to sleep. But I'm sure we can move some stuff around in the storage hut fer the others." Sunan smiled at Dan-dan and placed a hand on his wife's shoulder as the two started to walk away. Though after a few steps, the tribesman turned back and added quietly, "Take stock o' what's in there before ya let 'em stay the night." Dan-dan once more nodded at the older man before stepping into the hut to look around.
The place was actually quite empty. It was a simple round hut with a thatched roof and a floor of woven sticks and logs. A thin layer of dry moss and dirt made it softer to walk on and the elevation off the swamp floor provided a relief from the moisture. Shelves lined the walls and row upon row of terra-cotta pottery was stacked upon them. There were also a few fishing nets and rolls of twine that had been purchased from surrounding towns, along with some spare oars, fishing cages, and a few rusty metal knives.
Looking over the room, Dan-dan was fairly certain that it would do nicely for their visitors. He turned and started to step away, but a sudden thought struck him and he ducked back into the hut. The fisherman strode swiftly across the room to the fishing supplies, grabbed the few knives that were lodged into a log that served as their knife rack, and placed them up on a high shelf behind a few pots. He was a pretty tall man, and to any normal person wo wasn't standing on a stool or something, those knives would be entirely unseen.
As he walked out Dan-dan wondered if what he'd done was entirely necessary. Perhaps Baijeong and her husband had simply made him a little paranoid, but as he started back toward his own treehouse he couldn't help but feel the lingering suspicion in his mind; so much so that he'd forgotten to go speak with one of the elders like he'd originally intended.

It was almost way past noon as Kulap made her herbal mixes, her voice soft and light as she sang. morning light falls softly one me softly falling on me. Warm earth heals my flesh and bones. My flesh and bones are the earth Sweet water fills my veins with life’s blood My blood is the water O the air of the sky fills my lungs My lungs are filled with the air Fire fire lighting’s life, sparks my soul My soul is ignited with fire
Morning light falls softly on me…
Kulap started again as she walked back to the Backroom to deal with Ji, she poured the herbal mixture on his burns and wrapped them again. Ru looked at Kulap with interest as she came back and cleaned the bowl. “What did you put on Ji?” He asked, ask Kulap, as she began doing her dishes. “nutin’ special, just a mixture of aloe, sorrel and lemon balm why?” Ru shrugged, “I was just curious really, does it make the wounds easier to heal?” Kulap paused and than looked at him. “Heck no, it makes him softer when we gut him fer a sacrifice. Mmm intestines.” Ru and Dao were shocked. Eyes were wide until Kulap broke into giggles. “Aww, yew fell for it. Imma jest pokin’ ya. The aloe is to absorb heat and the sorrel and lemon balm is for keepin’ it clean.” Dao growled and lunged at Kulap and took by the shoulder. “Don’t you dare f*ck with us stupid woman! We were nearly killed by Fire Nation, and you think it’s funny to crack jokes on us!? You have a lot of nerve.” Ru pulled rank, and dragged Dao off of her. “PRIVATE! Get your hands off of her, you have no right to do that. It was a joke it was your own damn fault for take it seriously now get out the house until you calm down!” Kulap rubbed her shoulder and looked down at the floor for a bit Butchie scuttled from his bed and growled warningly as Dao walk outside and sat on the balcony.

Dan-dan came up the ramp toward the porch of the tree house just as Dao was exiting the doorway. Dan-dan immediately recognized the bitterness on his face and he slowed down slightly, brigning his oar in front of him to grip with both hands. "What's goin' on?" he asked, his voice remaining unaccusing, but his scowl betrayed his thoughts.
The soldier looked towards him with an equally fowl gaze, and then replied after a few moments, "Nothing..." He looked around briefly and then started toard the ramp. Dan-dan gave him plenty of room as he passed by and disappeared around the bend of the tree on his way down the path. The fisherman continued to stare after him for several seconds before heading into the tree house.
"Anythin' happen while I was gone?" he asked the moment after stepping through the door.

"No nothing, just, Dao acting out of line again, Mr. Dan-Dan, I am gonna go check on Ji." Ru and Kai walked into the back room leaving Kulap with Dan-Dan. Kulap stood slient for second before walking over to kitchen to finish her herbal mixes. She seem more quiet and reserved and even distant now. "Have you found a place to keep the other three?" Asked Kulap in dull voice. She seemed tired too. "I mean I can keep Ji but the other three need to stay at some place else." Kulap glanced a the small bruise. "Exspecially Dao, he seems too turbilent for this house and angry, he needs healing, I mean the spiritual kind. But I am too tired and drained to even try. I just want to make dinner and get some sleep accually." Kulap began looking for some herbs she took aloe and rubbed it on her shoulder. She paused for a second as if thinking and showed Dan-dan the bruise.
"Dao caused it...I reckoned I upsetted him and he gone and grabbed meh shoulder." She sighed and added again. "Now don't you go startin' a fight Ru took care of it....I suppose if it makes yew feel better. Go and give 'im a good chew-out, but be civil."

Dan-dan couldn't do much more than just stare in astonishment at first. What kind of people were these men? They were rescued from the depths of the swamp, given medical aid and nourishment, and this was how they act? One of them assaulted his wife!?
"Wha-" he started to say, but the word was lost in a seething breath. Dan-dan's hands reached up and covered the lower half of his face, tugging on the skin as he dragged the hand back down. He looked around for a moment, feeling his temper rising.
Half of him wanted to charge out the door, find Dao, and beat him senseless with his oar. But at the same time, his more peaceful nature just wanted the men away; from his wife, from his house, from his entire Swamp. Without another word to Kulap he turned and headed into the back room where the other Earth kingdom soldiers were waiting.
"You can't stay here," he told them as he stepped through the entrance. The two men, Ru and Kai glanced at each other momentarily before Ru blew out a long sigh.
"I understand," the man said forlornly. Dan-dan stared at the soldier intently, but he could see that there was indeed goodness in this one. "We will leave as soon as we can."
"Two hours," Dan-dan said, deciding to put down a deadline. "My wife will do her best with yer man and I'll show ya the way out and give ya food an' water." The fisherman recieved a slow nod the the soldier and returned it with one of his own. "Til then, keep yer other one on a short leash.... I'll get y'all some lunch."
"Thank you for your kindess," Ru said, offering Dan-dan a bow. Dan-dan offered a nod in return, but he could see the soldier was unhappy with the decision. He backed out of the room and returned to Kulap's side.
"Think you can get that guy patched up enough to heal on his own in a few hours?" Dan-dan asked as he went about the task of assembling a lunch for their guests.
