Anime in itself is a bad word, and I don't like using it. In Japan, the word "anime" simply means "animation". In America, the word only encompasses the Japanese animation, which is a blurred line anyway, since so many things that qualify as anime are actually animated in other countries. I hadn't really even thought "anime" when it came to this show untill someone mentioned it, since I first saw it and went "oh cool, Korean". So my classification for Avatar is simply "Good Show".

I think this topic has been eaten chewed and swallowed
As an Otaku, Avatar is in a anime-or japanese animation style, but it isn't full blown anime. It was a lot of westie style thrown into it, like face faults and eye-poping. Second, most anime has a manga to orginate...Avatar obivious doesn't unless Vicom, and Tokoyopop are holding out on us. So to sum it all up. It's Amerme, westie cartoon with asia flavoring.
