Heads up...
Chinese elements: Earth, water, fire, metal and wood
Japanese and Indian elements: Earth, water, fire, air/wind and void/heaven.
I believe the reason why lava and lightning is under firebending mainly has to do with the use of heat itself. Maybe they're simply able to bend heat and fire is the main result they get.

In Return to Omashu, Azula used blue fire.. not lightning. In fire, color indicates how hot it is. Red is hot, Blue is Hotter, White (lightning) is OMFG TOAST.

...We're all thinking way too deeply about all this. But then again, it just shows how obsessed we are with the show. ....But thinking this deeply about it can't be healthy.

Thinking deeply is healthy. What are you, nuts? It's what keeps your brain going. You must use it to keep it healthy. Anyways, lightning falls under fire because of the molecule structure. Both fire and lightning are not solids, liquids or gases, they are plasma ;D Not only that, they are similar in the way they function, e.i. heat and reaction to molecules. It accutally makes very good sense why they put lightning under fire. If you really break them down into the most basic parts, they are similar... Anyways, this is the Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firebender

I'm sure all of you saw the episode where Iroh taught Zuko how to channel the lightning. In that, he also tried to teach him how to use it. There is your expplination as to how they can do it.

Eh, no matter what n00bs out there think, there will never be more than the four standard elements. if anything, there would be woodbending, but that's because the Chinese elements are wind, wood, fire, water, and earth. But, who would want to bend wood. So, hah! Actually, the chinese "Five Rings" are: metal, wood (plant), water, fire, and earth. Wind is considered a 'sub-element' and is related to wood. XD;;; EDIT: Vu Ganesha was ahead of me, and I didn't kNOW the japanese elements were like that - I thought they were the same as the chinese, for the days of the week (the weekdays), with sat & sun being Sun and Moon. @@; and OVERANALYZING is good! This is why we're here, to crack our heads together and expand the Avatar fanon/rp verse! XD;;; I'm incoherent.

In my Kung Fu school we learn 5 martial arts that match up with the five Chinese Elements Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. This is the Cycle of creation. Ill get into the cycle of destruction in a minute.
Wood creates fire, just like fire uses wood to burn. Fire creates Earth. The fire burns creating ash which becames Earth. Earth creates metal. Just like metal is drawn from the earth. Metal creates Water. (This one is harder to understand but i suppose when metal melts it becomes liquid. Anyways Water creates wood. Just like trees need water to grow.
The Cycle of destruction is different. It Goes Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, Metal.
Wood breaks through Earth. Earth turns water to mud (Earth). Water puts out fire. Fire melts Metal. A Metal cuts wood. (like an axe)
The five martial arts we learn are: Xing Yi=Wood (it drives in) Northern Shaolin Longfist=Fire (its explosive and aggressive) Hung Gar=Earth (It is strongly rooted to the ground with very sturdy stances) Ba Gua=Metal/Air (it uses circular movement to move around your opponent) Tai Chi= Water (it is fluid and creative your weight shifts through the stances like a wave pushing and pulling)
this may not have much to do with how lightning fits with fire but it fts with the mention of the Chinese Elements and its very interesting

Mm... just pointing out:
"The fifth, aether (akasha or akash) is symbolized by Aang as an intermediary of the Spirit World." -Avatar The Last Airbender, Wikipedia.
So there are still four elements, just another Hindu element is being "symbolized" in the show, but it can't be something you can bend. Try bending aether >>
