Agni watched as Azula greeted her friend -- Lady Mai, as Agni recalled. They exchanged pleasantries as Agni looked away, bored. Walking away from them, she lost herself in the crowd of men. A secret smile graced her lips and she thought of what the soldiers were thinking -- a young woman in the midst of men who were a long was from home and hearth. Using her psychic powers, she tapped a few of them, only confirming what she thought. Oh, if only the body was truly physical... she's rewards a few of them.
Instead, she decided to boost their morale. Agni made her way far from the crowd, into the woods. She released her human form, getting a little tired of holding it. Perching on a tree branch, she groomed her feathers merticulously before taking flight. The sun gleamed on her fiery down and it felt good. She circled high, then, letting out an earsplitting screech, Agni circled lower and lower until she perched atop a tree once more, gazing below at the army.
An army at her command... she body shuddered with the thought. Her power, her flame, surged through every single last soldier -- whether they were able to firebend or not. She debated on whether or not to address the crowd, fly down to perch on Azula's shoulder, or simply fly off and rest before assuming human form once more.

Din emerged from the Spirit World near where Vishnu had told him the army was massing. He made certain to fly very high, away from prying eyes. Even if the people below saw him, they wouldn't be able to make out what he was, and even if they could, he looked just like a normal grey owl anyway. Nobody could tell Din from any other owl... unless he was angry, in which case the difference was obvious.
Now that he was closer, he was able to see the army massing. It was very large, certainly an invasion force. He gloomily predicted that Ba Seng Sei would need a miracle to survive... namely Aang, wherever he was. Din hoped he was coming along as nicely as rumors said he was. Perhaps he'd go check up on him after this... or perhaps he'd even turn up here, at the battlefield.
Now, he wondered as his grey eyes searched over the battlefield, where was Agni? She would be fairly obvious if she was in her phoenix form... but would she be? Surely she wouldn't. She wouldn't dare do THAT this close to Ba Seng Sei, would she? Unlike Din, who was mostly a forgotten spirit, except by some very old communities (who received lots of rain as gifts), Agni was the target of most of the Fire Nation's love, and most of the other Nations' chagrin.
But no, there she was. He saw her perching on a tree, admired by the whole congregation of the Fire Nation... Agni. He inwardly groaned, as he soared a bit higher on the winds. She would recognize him immediately... if he was spotted. But she was a bit busy soaking up all the admiration... so he reasoned that he was safe for the moment.

Azula turned her head at the sound of the gasps of awe and murmurs from the soliders, their deep voices like the rumbling of the massive tanks the Army had imployed. The young princess turned and faced where all the men and the nobles among her had turned to. The first wind of summer lifted the sweet smell of burning wood to her nose, lifting her snake-like tendrils of hair and blowing whisps into her eyes. Those golden eyes locked with the slited eyes of the Phoenix, each burning with the fires of secret keeping. The Royal Family had always been favored by Agni.. and Azula knew that well.
Clicking her heels like the well trained men behind her, Azula turned and motioned quickly towards the Phoenix, lifting her commanding voice to the winds. Golden accents glittered on her uniform, the delicate embroidery full of fire. "Behold! Agni, Goddess of Fire and our Great God of the Sun!"
The Princess was among the first to bow her head to the Goddess, actually lowering herself to one knee. Though her head was bowed, she kept her eyes locked on the fire bird, that diadem in her hair reflecting the sunlight behind the bird. She folded one arm across her bent knee, the other crossed her heart and held their. Only the Fire Lord could just bow to the Phoenix, and while Azula knealed, the solider prostrated themselves, pressing their foreheads to the ground. If Agni was not properly honored.. a great and vicious, wild fire could wipe their camps out in seconds.. so or so the legends told.
"Great Goddess Agni... Bless us.. Bless these men. They seek to honor you..."

"Actually...," Vu rose an eyebrow. Slightly turning his head back towards the older man as a second, and fashionably late, procession marched into the encampment. "...running through it?" Mimicking his words. Certainly this man was a veteran. But a veteran of the famous six hundred day siege of Ba Sing Se?! Let alone one that was still a seargent and had a function body, unlike many of the other veterans who possessed one or both of those traits.
Vu felt an almost instinctive urge to take a step back from the craggy faced soldier. Not out of fear or respect, but more in a sense of caution as he was obviously in the presence of a very dangerous man. Maybe, giving by his low rank after so long, an insubordinate man at that. And judging by his size and history, to which Vu was estimating in his mind, a dangerous man who did not take his acts of insubordination lightly.
"Must have been," instead Vu stood beside him, "quite a campaign." Tugging at his collar and wiping at his neck. As if subconsciuosly reminding or hiding his rank from the man. While his fellow soldier in turn reminded him of the reasons and whys he did not sign on to become a common footsoldier. Especially when such a job would have you rushing headlong into the thicket of spears with dozens of yelling men pushing you ownwards to your demise. His own father was thoroughly happy his son did not become a common footsoldier.
His reverie was soon displaced, a muffled whump and instant flash of light from the woods just behind the two processions. Easily noticable in the darkening forest. The sound was unlike any explosion or attack many knew or could think of. But many were on their guard in the next instant. Reaching for their weapons or shifting their bodies in battle stances.
Many awed and even speechless at the marvel erupting from the forest. Admist the setting sun, the presence of a firey bird gleamed in the fading light. Circling high above the entire camp. A deafening and otherworldly cry that pierced its way into almost any man that heard it. Some reaching for their ears. A few squinting in pain. Others moving hands onto pendants and medallions or bowing. And others stilled in awe. Thousands of eyes watched the being as it flew above them, enshrouding their camp amidst a burning halo, before perching atop a tree. Volcanic feathers flowing like loose silk amidst the breeze. "Behold! Agni, Goddess of Fire and our Great God of the Sun!" The voice of Princess Azula pulled Vu back into himself. Eyes still, reverently, attached to the volcanic figure. Finally blinking, Vu's knees began to bend. His eyes lowering downward as he began to prostrate. His forehead caressing the cold forest floor.

The other soldier’s awkwardness seemed to go unnoticed by Zilong, though the large man did hear his words. It had been “quite a campaign” in many ways. It involved the largest and bloodiest battles he had ever taken part in, his greatest triumphs and moments of elation, and his lowest moments of failure, defeat, and even regret. Even before the siege, he had begun to change a little bit, but the siege solidified it. He had seen Lu Ten fall with his own eyes (from afar, mind you) and had heard of General Iroh’s uncontrollable mourning that left him broken. Men all around him had been slaughtered in the retreat, desperately trying to escape the hounding of the Earth Kingdom counter-attack. After that, he had changed, not so much as a person, but rather, what he believed in had changed. He still believed in and loved the Fire Nation and its rulers, that was something that could never be shaken, but a different kind of faith was lost…
Zilong’s reminiscing was broken by a loud sound he could not place coming from the rear of the camp, and he whirled around with his guan dao in hand to take a look. His eyes widened at what he saw. A bird that looked as though it were on fire was rising up out of the woods, letting out a haunting call as it rose into the air. He recognized it from the countless tales he had heard as a child back home, and from the speeches of some of the more spiritually oriented commanders. His teeth clenched, and while he lowered his weapon, his grip on it strengthened until his knuckles grew white.
"Behold! Agni, Goddess of Fire and our Great God of the Sun!"
Agni. The Fire Nation’s patron goddess. He had been told as a youth, like all Fire Nation children, that Agni would be watching over him and the Fire Nation. That if you prayed and had enough faith, she would help you in your time of need. Lies, all of it. Pious soldiers died just as the faithless. Good men died alongside the corrupt. Even the great heroes like Lu Ten were not aided by Agni when they truly needed it, and certainly not all those who died in the retreat from Ba Sing Se. Yet, here everyone was, bowing to her and offering their thanks. It infuriated him. Soldiers swore servitude to the Firelord, not Agni, and the Firelord swore servitude to none, god or man. How could he bow to this…civilian of a god that sat and watched as brave soldiers fought battles for her? All the Firelords during the war had fought in battle or at least commanded in it, but Agni had not.
Just about everyone else had bowed by now. He would soon be left alone. Fine, so be it. Let her come and demand to know why he didn’t bow. In fact, why wait? Opening his mouth, he was an instant away from yelling up to the goddess when suddenly someone’s shoulder slammed into his back and he was tackled from behind. Turning his had towards his assailant with murder in his eyes, he again opened his mouth to speak, but was stopped, this time by himself. It was the captain of his platoon, Wenyuan.
Although not nearly as big as Zilong, Wenyuan was a well built man in his late twenties. Talented, charismatic and empathetic to his men, some believed he would become a general some day, although he tends to deny such compliments by saying he’ll become a general the day Zilong became a nurse. Due to his charisma and empathy, he had been one of the few people Zilong had allowed himself to talk about any personal matters at all. Among the matters he talked about, naturally, had been his views towards Agni and religion in general. Fortunately, it seemed as though that knowledge had become useful. By now, everyone had bowed, and unless you looked very closely, it would seem as though both Zilong and Wenyuan were as well thanks to the captain’s quick actions.
“Captain…” he started in bewilderment, but was quickly cut off.
“Sergeant, just shut up and listen for a minute,” Wenyuan hissed. “Listen, I understand how you feel. Hell, I haven’t served half as long as you and believe me, I have my bones to pick with the gods, but damn it, big man, you can do that when your dead. If she feels disrespected, Agni might not only burn you to ash, but this entire camp as well. If you so much as look at her funny, you’ll be putting this entire army in jepordy. Do you understand?”
Zilong grimaced, but nodded slowly.
“Good. Now, just keep silent and bow until she leaves, and that’s an order, sergeant.”
Zilong looked at the captain for a moment and then nodded, “As you command, Captain.”
With that, Zilong shifted into a slightly more convincing bow and turned his face towards the ground. It hadn’t seemed like many people, if anyone, noticed what happened, so great was their fascination with Agni, and it was doubtful the goddess had. Hopefully, it would stay that way…

But Agni did notice the soldier's reluctance. She felt it, too, his burning dislike for her. Shaking her feathers, she took flight, soaring over the soldiers' heads, and landed on the defiant one's shoulder. She was light, she knew, and probably lighter still to a strong soldier. She flashed through his mine a moment, only to learn his name. Zilong.
"Zilong," she cooed sweetly. One caught more rhinoflies with honey than vinegar. "I see your doubt. You do not think a spirit such as I should be worrshiped. You think you should say your pray to the Fire Lord and no other." She paused, letting her words sink in. And twinging feeling made her look up into the heavens, and there she saw it: dark against the sun, a shape that normally haunted the night... an owl.
Din, spirit of the South Wind.
Damn, damn, DAMN! Not here... not now... not when she needed to make an example for this Zilong. Her feathers ruffled, the fiery tips getting hotter and hotter with her anger. Careful not in inflict a major burn into her stand, she shifted on her claws and turned back to Zilong.
"My sweet child, do you wish to test me? Wish for me to prove something to you?" She attempted to keep her voice sugary, but she was failing slightly. Din's appearance unnerved and angered her, and this act of defiance from a mere mortal just plain annoyed her. She her options for showing off were limited with Din here, although he could not directly attack her unless she directly attacted a mortal -- or Vishnu, that arrogant sonofademon (and to Agni had to submit to) would punish them all.
Her wings were tied, so to speak. She clear amber eyes looked around for something, something she could do. She would not harm her own children unless they were disobediant, and with Din watching her every move.
She waited for Zilong to speak -- she had to think! Perhaps probe his mind further for what exactly he did not believe in....

Mai joined the other forces in respectfully kneeling to their patroness, face to the ground and arms straight out in front. Black, sharpened fingernails pointing at the resplendently-colored being looked up to as a goddess of Mai's people. And what little she could actually care. She only did such a thing out of respect.
The pallid girl arose along with the others, and swept her loose, perfectly even bangs to the side to even them out. She had seen through her peripheral vision a man that had not bowed to the phoenix, unsually enough, but Mai didn't care to acknowledge it. He would likely be punished for his action. She resumed her normal posture, hands in opposite billowing sleeves with her normal apathetic stare, seemingly looking off into nothingness. She walked over and stood behind Azula after meandering around the area in boredom. It had occured to her that Ty Lee may have been invited to join Azula as well, and she felt the need to make such an inquiry.
An unusual hue of curiosity was present in Mai's voice as she stood beside Azula, not even looking her in the face, and asked her in a rather impersonal way, "Azula...did you also invite Ty Lee to join us?"

Ty lee yawned, she had been spending the day in Azula's train napping. She sprung up out of bed and began to stretch. First she reached down and touched her toes, and then worked her hands back to her ankles. Next she pulled her leg up to her shoulder, and balanced perfectly on the other leg, she repeated the stretch on the other leg. Next she began lowering down to do the splits, which was the only part of her daily routine that caused her slight pain, she winced a little and stood up a few minutes later.
She got out a small circular mirror with an ivory base and handle and began brushing her hair with an ivory brush. She brushed out her bed hair and parted it neatly to the right, she smiled and put her brush and mirror away in a well polished oak desk. From another drawer she got out a small glass bottle filled with a pink liquid and sprayed it generously around her body, which made her smell like a rose in bloom.
She smiled, Mai should have been there by now, and then she would have better things to do than sit around watching soldiers and day dreaming about going back to the circus. She excitedly flung the door of the train open, and jumped out. She looked around the mass of soldiers, and could see nothing in the sea of black uniforms and dark forest green tents. She walked around aimlessly, attracting lusty looks from some of the younger wet behind the ears troops. She shrugged them off, and continued walking around until she spotted Mai approaching Azula at the front of the camp. Ty lee cheered and her face lit up with joy! Ty lee rushed through the crowd of stinky soldiers, doing cartwheels and jumping over them. Azula had most likely seen her, but Mai was completely clueless. Her timing was impeccable, as Mai was mentioning her name right as she got behind her.
"Boo!" Ty Lee shouted and proceeded to hug Mai from behind tightly...

Zilong’s eyes widened as he felt the bird, or rather, the goddess, perch upon his shoulder. He glanced quickly at Captain Wenyuan, moving only his eyes in an attempt to offer a wordless apology. Had she seriously felt his feelings? Had she read his thoughts? He hadn’t thought that was even possible, but apparently it was. As the spirit talked to him, Zilong’s mind raced…well, it moved as quickly as it was capable of. He had to get out of this. He couldn’t be roasted by some vengeful parakeet! His death, would be in battle, against hordes of enemies to the Fire Nation, aiding his brothers in arms. If he said something stupid, he could be putting them all in danger like Captain Wenyuan had said. He gritted his teeth in frustration. What was there to do?
Suddenly, there was a strange pause in Agni’s speech, and he felt his armor grow hot for a moment. The heat seemed to shock him out of his frenzied thoughts, and when the goddess spoke again, something was different. He didn’t know what, but there was something. Suddenly, his thoughts changed. What the hell was he doing? He hadn’t killed thousands of rockheads, endured countless wounds, and buried hundreds of friends to be turned into some groveling sod by a god damned peaBAD! with a fever! Whether it was out of bravery, pride, or just plain stupidity, Zilong decided then and there that he wasn’t going to take this laying down. Well…he would still technically be bowing, since he wasn’t about to stand up with the thing right on his shoulder, but he was going to let her know what he thought. By now some soldiers had stood to gaze upon the display, and most around him seemed to be backing away.
"My sweet child, do you wish to test me? Wish for me to prove something to you?"
“You have already been tested, Agni,” Zilong replied stonily in a deep, rumbling voice that carried to the crowd around him, unmoving from his position. “For two decades I’ve asked nothing of you, and that hasn’t changed today.”
To the on-looking crowd, the statement would seem harmless, if not in praise of Agni. In fact, he had heard from elders and his father that it is most humble to ask for nothing, and a soldier with great faith in Agni said that every day, faith was “tested,” that this was part man’s trials or some crazy BAD! like that. He had been killed a week after saying that. In fact, many who prayed to Agni, made sacrifices to her before battle, or praised her had ended up dead over the years. Killed, and then as a corpse run over by one advancing army or another. Oh, Agni had been tested in Zilong’s mind, all right, and she had failed miserably. By around his third of fourth year at war, he was a man of little faith, and while it took the Siege of Ba Sing Se to completely crush it, he wasn’t lying when he said he hadn’t asked for anything from the gods for twenty years.
While Zilong may have been satisfied with what he said, however, there was no denying that it was profoundly stupid. The gods did not always appreciate honesty…

There appeared the be a dissenter. Din grinned inwardly (it would be rather hard to grin with a beak, you know...). This was a good sign. Not everybody loved Agni as much as the fanatics. Then again, not many loved him either. Hmmm....
Ah well. He didn't live to be loved and fawned over. The owl appearance settled quite well with him. It wasn't pretty to look at. But it struck fear into the weak hearted. It was a hunter, which suited him perfectly. And most of all, it symbolized wisdom. While he had failed to attain that as of yet, he was still working on it. What was that saying? A wise man admits he knows nothing? Or something like that.
But anyway, Agni seemed rather angry, and looked up...
Well, crap.
She knew he was here now. It was obvious. Her entire demeanor changed, and she seemed reluctant to do anything really special with Din here. Din wouldn't have stopped her, though. But let her think he would. He flew a bit lower. There wasn't much point hiding himself now that she was aware of his presence.

Cautiously. Slowly. The still prostrated Vu Ganesa turned his head. Lifting his forehead from the cold forest floor and almost giving it his cheek instead as he attempted to view what was taking place besides him from the corner of his eyes.
Mistakenly, he had first assumed that the large man, who Agni revealed to be named Zilong, was only slow in bowing himself to Agni due to Zilong being overawed or dumbfounded at such a rare, if not legendary, occurance. Such a moment that would not only mark their endeavour as a profound or intense point in history but years later would breed tales of preternatural elements interwoven into the fabric of reality. And if Zilong's hesitation was not borne of puzzlement then Vu would then have to attribute it to the boldness of the man who had likey participated in numerous and most famed battles in recent Fire Nation military history.
In other words: an unimpressed man.
That was soon becoming the case in Vu's mind as Agni singled the groundpounder firebender out. Flying over to him and landing on the huge man's shoulder. Her presence and aura this close to him eliciting a greater sense of warmth in his being. Yes, he was feeling the heat given off by her firery being but there was almost a fulfilling quality to her warmth as well. Something he was feeling in his very belly. Much like the feeling from a hot and hearty meal or downing hot tea.
But despite what his body felt, there was concern and fear about Vu. Not for himself but toward this defiant Zilong. Surely, if the goddess was displeased the six plus foot man's body would be no more. In the blink of the eye he could be vaporized into a black spot upon the ground or his body left aflame and screaming for hours on end if this supernatural being so wished it.
Yet neither Zilong nor, especially, Goddess Agni would have to know about any of this, Vu told himself. He could easily not tell Zilong, but Agni?
No...
She herself had peered into Zilong's mind, which was why she was reprimanding him now. And once that realization came into Vu's perception he quickly flooded his own mind to hide himself and his current inner thoughts.
Instead he continually recited to himself. Hymns, prayers and suttas repeated over and over in his mind while he willed himself to picture altars and temples, prayer ceremonies and the memories of his own family in prayer or meditation.
Over and over and over as he strained his ear to listen. Lips pulling into his mouth as he held his breath. Wonder what would come next.

In the most odd of coincidences, Mai found herself jolting upward unintentionally as a familiar girlish voice raised behind and two two feminine arms wrapped around her torso in a playful hug. Surely nobody noticed her startled motion, or her expression briefly slipping into a state of surprise at the unexpected bout of physical contact. They were probably too busy noting the large soldier's irreverant act to care. At once she looked over her shoulder to see her good friend Ty Lee, and the dark-clad noblewoman quickly regained her composure. An unaffected air of being was present as Mai turned around and looked at Ty Lee's smiling face. In a dead-beat tone laden with irony, she said, "Did you have to do that?"
A deep and subdued laugh issued from the depths of Mai's throat as she bore a demure grin. "That answers my question." she said, looking slightly at the ground though he comment was directed to Azula. Taking a step backward, she bowed to her upbeat friend who was almost her polar opposite in most every way personality-wise. "Great to see you again, friend."

Ty Lee finally released Mai from her arms. As usual Mai's aura was unreadable, a feeling would disappear as quickly as it came. Ty Lee was once again fascinated with this, and began to feel the urge to prod her mind with irritating questions, alas she controlled herself and held her questions back for another time. She nodded at Azula, who seemed rather busy today., her aura was proud and vibrant, nothing out of the usual today it seemed. She stretched her arms out a little more and yawned, her face lit up as Mai spoke to her.
"Its good to see you to!" She said smiling "Whats going on why is it so quiet?" she asked with a puzzled voice, she had no clue what had been going on prior to her leaving the train. She stood twiddling her thumbs, it felt good to see her friends again.

Azula's golden eyes n arrowed as she watched the phoenix flock to the footsolider, engaging him in converstation. A twicth developed under her eye as anger built within her. This was not what she wanted! The Princess scowled, ignoring the blabbling of Ty Lee and Mai behind her, both oblvious to the great Goddess's presence. Her fists clenched as she stood, regal and stern with a gentle breeze playing with her hair. It was her the men should be bowing too. After all, she had summoned Agni to bless them.. at least that's what she wanted them to think. Agni was there to garner an undying support, to build a rage inside the men against the Earth Kingdom and it's barbarians.
The princess turned quickly towards a pile of catapult shot, bundles of rags and cloth soaked in flammable liquid and bound by nets to be used by firebenders on the catapults and trebuchets. She dug in her fingernails and feet, climbing quickly to the top of the grease pile. Her hands were filty, smears across the scarlet of her uniform, and even a smudge against her ivory cheek. Time to draw the attention back to her.
Azula lifted one hand to the sky, two fingers drawn through in a semi circle down to her torso as she crouched. She could feel the tickle of electricty building in her fingertip, she could feel to the energy traveling through the ground into her feet. Positive. Another hand shot upward, mimicing the first as sparks of white lightning began to appear along her fingers and through the air tracing the arc. Energy streamed down from the heavens into her body, she could feel. Negative. Her hair lifted around her face, and on the back of her neck, stood on end. She held immense power in each fingertip. Silently, she brought them together, before striking outward. A flash of white hot light emitted from her hand, leaving a curl of smoke from her fingers. The thunderous boom skied over the trees, striking the distant mountians and echoing back omniously. The princess waited till the sound had died down before standing straight.
"Gentlemen.. it has been 100 years since my Great Grandfather, Fire Lord Souzin started out on this divine quest to conquer the world and perge it of those unfit to live in our divine world. We bear the blessings of the Gods! Great Goddess Agni is proof of that! She humbly appears before us.. to give you strenght!" The princess reached out an arm to the phoenix, hand outstretched. "Goddess Agni! Command me and I will lead these men to victory in your name!"

Agni could have killed something. Din's appearance, though she was planning to be rather "uninvolved," still severly limited her. Zilong's impudence was barely tolerable, but she had not the time. He would get off easy.
This time.
But then a flash of lightning, and Azula's shrill voice sounded through the air.
"Gentlemen.. it has been 100 years since my Great Grandfather, Fire Lord Souzin started out on this divine quest to conquer the world and perge it of those unfit to live in our divine world. We bear the blessings of the Gods! Great Goddess Agni is proof of that! She humbly appears before us.. to give you strenght!"
Her arm flew in Agni's direction. "Goddess Agni! Command me and I will lead these men to victory in your name!"
Yes.... yes. She would show Zilong, she would show Din that her rightful place was ruling goddess of the world... born of the sun, the life-giver, she was the rightful heiress of the world.
Lifting her wings, the took to the air, flames dancing as she swooped around and landed hard on Azula's arm. Her talons gripped tightly into the princess' arm, a little too hard than normal. While the princess was correct, Agni did not like to be shown as a common bird. Her voice and manner was cold as she addressed Azula.
"Ba Seng Se shall fall in my name."
