The captain’s grimace deepened as the apparent leader of the Kyoshi Warriors spoke. He did not seem to be taking this news well at all.
“Only one of us got away, and finding her should be our first priority after we're out of harm's way here."
“I’m afraid not,” the captain said sternly. “Our priority is Ba Sing Se. I’m sorry about your comrade, but if Ba Sing Se falls, the war is over, do you understand? Any information you have about the Fire Nation’s forces or are own must be delivered to high command immediately, especially if it’s about whoever’s at the head of that Fire Nation army. We are heading straight to Ba Sing Se without any delays.”
Fa bit her lip, but still found herself unable to keep her mouth shut, “But captain…”
“Private Fa!” the captain snapped, whirling on Rong. “I have had enough of your insubordination for one day! In case you have forgotten, you are a soldier in the Earth Kingdom Army, and that means you will follow my orders to the letter! And make no mistake, just because you stumbled upon some useful information does not me you won’t be receiving reprimands when we get to Ba Sing Se. Do I make myself clear?”
Taken aback by the sudden outburst, Rong’s expression briefly took on a pained look. Why did this always have to happen? Why did doing the right thing and duty always seem to conflict like this? But the captain was right. She was a soldier, and in her position, she couldn’t afford to argue. She’d only had minor reprimands up until now, but anything major and her service might be put into question. She couldn’t afford to sit on the sidelines now. If only out of fear of that, she had to play the good soldier for now. Standing up straight and tightening her stance, Rong placed her right fist in her left palm and inclined her head.
“Yes, sir,” she said, though somewhat reluctantly.
The captain gave her one last look and then turned on his heel. And so the march continued…
