Work was indeed a welcome distraction. Rooting through all the rubble that was once the ship’s kitchen was a long, meticulous work. It took much focus and attention to detail to spot out, record, then trash each little charred piece of what used to be dishware or furniture or a food container under the kitchen’s thick coating of black dust. Really, the physical strain was the easy part of the job – just leaning down, picking up, and tossing. It was the recording that was so tedious. Complete inventory was to be taken down; nothing was to be missed. Even if an object was so damaged it was unrecognizable it was to be recorded as such, so it could be compared with the previous inventory and perhaps labeled.
At first, Sho took part as a scavenger, merely fishing through the dust and rooting through the cabinets. However, soon it was apparent that while most of the men could comb the kitchen with their eyes and fingers, few of them had a keen sense of organization. After thirty minutes of picking up, only to have to start over again because of mutual confusion among his coworkers, Sho happy took over recording duties. A sore wrist was better than early back problems in his opinion.
Progress became steady and automatic after awhile. A man would call out an item and its condition to Sho, Sho would record, and then, based on the item’s condition, it would be tossed into a pile. Arata supervised and would occasionally assist or shout out an order or two.
Time flew and soon work was done. In all areas, much was needed. A few scattered mumbles of worry drifted through the group, wondering if their wishes would even be considered with all the Earth Kingdom soldiers on the island. Sho voiced that the island might be in financial need, so would happily take their money. Another added that while that could be true, the island still might be unwilling to give up a mass portion of food for they might need it also.
A little tired but accomplished, the group trudged back up on deck just in time to hear other crewmen making preparations for arriving at the island. Sho blinked in amazement. Time had passed so quickly! The sun was lower in the sky, and it hung over a slice of land. Sho started at this in marvel; it seemed like it had been such a long time since he had last stood on something that didn’t move beneath his feet!
While Sho stared, his fellow crewmen muttered arrangements about getting a scouting party together to get everything they needed. Sho was excused from this, since he did such a fine job recording, and was free to wander the island as he pleased, as long as he got back to the ship on time. Excited by this, Sho rushed up to the railing of the deck, watching as the ship drifted closer to Nadai Island. It was only after he arrived there that he noticed who was also staring out over the ocean.
“Hello.” Sho greeted cheerfully. He was excited; the thought of arriving on the island and exploring it had energized him. Sho grasped onto the railing and leaned over a bit, inhaling the saltiness of the ocean. “I can’t wait until we dock.”
