Midori’s mouth fell slightly ajar, shocked at the completely random comment. For a long moment, her thoughts went completely blank; how could she even comprehend such a rash and serious accusation? Finally, her mind broke through the shock. Marriage? Midori’s stomach twisted nervously at the thought; their relationship was no where near that level! Wherever did Mesheiko’s father get such an utterly fictitious impression? Talking about their bubbling relationship was one thing, but marriage? Yes, it was official: the rumors were seriously getting out of control. An accusation so powerful needed correction quickly.
“… W-what?” Midori began shakily, still rather aghast, bright eyes wide. “We are not getting married!” She then added firmly, though her voice still held a small bit of hysteria that her furiously beating heart was producing. Again she wondered what could cause a seemingly sensible man to make such a rash conclusion. It was Cheng’s comment that had initiated the accusation, so maybe Mesheiko’s father had not understood? Made a wrong conclusion? This seemed to made sense… but his tone kind of hurt her feelings.
He must not like me very much. Midori thought in dismay. If he would speak out about… us like that. So strongly. Midori felt as if she had failed in something drastically important. She had tried so hard to leave a good impression… She couldn’t even think of anything she had done that was so offensive. Still, the accusation was rash…Perhaps it was a good time to speak out about their previous plans, so there were no more misinterpretations…
“Cheng was simply asking if Mesheiko was going to tag along with me as I went home.” Midori went on, her voice calmer though softer now and hesitant. Swiftly, her gaze shifted away from his father and to Mesheiko. Her eyes held her hesitancy, but they were also somewhat sad. She knew Mesheiko would want to go home with his father; she couldn’t blame him. A family was more important than a…. well. Whatever she was. And Mesheiko’s father didn’t like her, which seemed to thrash any shred of hope for the two of them. Suddenly, Midori felt very sore.

In one fell swoop it seemed the entirety of their relationship was exposed. Now Cheng would know, and although he was a true friend to Mesheiko and would not tell, word would simply spread. Any chance he and Midori had at privacy had now flown out the infirmary window. Also, it seemed Mesheiko's father did not exactly approve of their relationship now that he knew. This was all working out wonderfully. Mesheiko had not even begun to consider marriage, but now such a possibility seemed hopeless. That put a serious damper on his relationship with Midori, which, in turn, darkened his spirits. Midori was so uplifting to him just in herself, but to be able to engage in a relationship with her gave Mesheiko and will and a way to live.
"No, Dad," Mesheiko choked out. "We're not getting married," Mesheiko said, nervously chuckling a little bit to try and lighten the mood. Even Cheng did not seem to find this funny, but no doubt he would later. However, at the moment it was so serious and so silent for a moment. Even the noises of the infirmary and the outside world of the camp seemed to melt away in that moment, though not in a good moment. "Well, that's a relief," Mesheiko's father said, joining in with Mesheiko's chuckling, though his was much stronger and more confident. Then, the relief came to Mesheiko as well, and his chuckling became stronger and Cheng joined in in this. Between the three of them, a few nervous chuckles turned into raucous laughter. A nurse or two even turned their heads to make sure Mesheiko was alright and the laughter was not actually a strange form of choking.
"So, now that we've got that straightened out, what's the plan?" Cheng asked. "I've got one more thing to straighten out," Mesheiko's father replied. "The original plan was for Mesheiko to return to Midori's home, correct?" Mesheiko's father inquired. Mesheiko nodded. "And then I would decide where to go once Cheng's service was up," he responded. This sent all three of the men thinking again.
Mesheiko had good cause to go with any of the people residing here with him at the moment. Cheng needed the help at his family's farm, he had hardly spent any time with his father recently, and he loved Midori. Mesheiko had by this point ruled out staying in the military out of active service for then he would be pleasing no one. Mesheiko's father could sense the bond his son had with both Midori and Cheng. He hated to uproot their plans, but he desperately wanted to spend time with Mesheiko. Then, he thought of a suitable solution. "Well, why change that?" Mesheiko's father said. "I could simply accompany you and Mesheiko," he said to Midori. "I know it may not have been the privacy you two were hoping for," Mesheiko's father said, amused, "but it seems to be a suitable compromise." Mesheiko had to agree. No, he wouldn't have all the one on one time with Midori he had expected, but in a way, having his father around would make their one on one time even more valuable. Yes, it seemed fine to Mesheiko, and Cheng was speaking out against it, so he would let Midori make the final desicion. It was, after all, her life and her family's life they would be disrupting, and Mesheiko did not want to disturb her. He loved her too much.

Midori’s smile hesitantly returned and brightened; during the soothing sensation of laughter that had gradually erupted over the thick layer of lingering awkwardness, Midori’s stomach mercifully unclenched from it’s previous tensed position, and she became much more relaxed, though, not enough so to join in the laughter as fully as the others, as funny as the moment was. Her smile only broadened, however, when it seemed that their plans would not be totally thrashed, even if, as accurately stated, she and Mesheiko would not be receiving the privacy she had been excitedly anticipating. In spite of everything, the whole plan seemed like a fair trade; Mesheiko’s father deserved to spend time with him much more than she did, so it seemed almost generous to still be allowed his company for her journey home. And getting to know Mesheiko’s father would certainly be an interesting, if not a fully entertaining experience.
“That does sound fair; I agree.” Midori replied with a nod, her perkiness quickly returning to both her voice and posture. She flashed a satisfied smile in Mesheiko’s direction to express her sincerity, before politely returning to gaze to his father, nodding once more in a more respectful manner. “It would be lovely to have both of you accompany me home. Thank you very much for your offer.”
Now smiling in a contented, easy manner, Midori’s trademark optimism peaked. Perhaps, this offer of kindness revealed that Mesheiko’s father didn’t disapprove of her too terribly. If he was severely objecting, after all, wouldn’t he simply refuse for Mesheiko to go along with her? Perhaps this was a chance to prove herself to be a likeable woman! There was still hope.

Mesheiko breathed a silent sigh of relief. With the heavy tension that had filled the room only moments before lifted, he felt as if he could finally relax. Veteran soldiers often told stories of ghosts around the fire to scare the fresh soldiers. Soldiers both allied and enemy alike haunted the battlefield if their affairs were not set in order before their untimely death, or so he'd been told. Mesheiko personally was not terribly superstitious, but on his first night in the Army he could hardly sleep for the terrible stories he had been told earlier in the night. At the moment, Mesheiko felt like one of those greatly feared spirits, and he gravely realized that he easily could have become one. He shuddered to think of such, however; he wouldn't have been able to discover his feelings with Midori, or see and reconcile with his father, or a whole host of other things. Now, however, with the tension gone he could rest easily, unlike those troubled spirits.
He was thankful that he was spending this time with his father and friends, but even more so that his father and friends were spending this time with each other. Mesheiko felt that his budding relationship with Midori could easily blossom and develop into something greater, though he knew not when. It was good to know, then, that while his father did not approve of marriage between them now, it might lead to such later down the road and Mesheiko's father at least approved of Midori herself. "Wonderful," Mesheiko said softly, almost to the point where it could not be heard. Cheng, however, was close and could hear Mesheiko's word. He grinned. "Wonderful indeed," Cheng said, although to him it was not quite as wonderful. Cheng's family desperately needed extra help on the farm, and even with Cheng sending most of his salary home, they could not afford hired help. Mesheiko might've helped, after he had spent some quality time with Midori. Now, however, it seemed bleak.
Mesheiko would now have to opportunity to bond with his father and his sweetheart, and between the two Cheng seemed left in the dust. Still, he was glad that Mesheiko was finding happiness in the midst of all this chaos. The simple appearance of a favorite girl and his father wouldn't cheer Cheng as much as it did Mesheiko. Of course, Cheng had the attention of many women, and he had seen his father quite often even after he entered the Army. Mesheiko had had neither of these things. Cheng would find a solution to his problem, he was sure. He hoped that Mesheiko could do so as well.
"Okay," Mesheiko spoke up, "since we've got everything set, do you think I can rest?" Mesheiko's father was a little surprised, but Cheng certainly wasn't. He had stayed the night with Mesheiko, and Mesheiko was a restless sleeper. "Sure," Cheng replied, "I need to go eat anyway." And with that, he slipped away, but Mesheiko wondered if he was going immediately to eat with the other soldiers in their sort of cafeteria, or first make a quick stop to the kitchen. Mesheiko doubted his charm would work on the cooks twice in one day. "Of course," Mesheiko's father said gently. "I'll just stay here, if that's okay," he said, almost inquiring. Mesheiko simply nodded to indicate that it was fine. Mesheiko's father then glanced over to Midori, inquiring of her with his eyes as to whether she would stay, also. He would enjoy her company, but he did not want to disturb Mesheiko nor leave him. Mesheiko caught this glance, for his father was not quite as sneaky as he with glancing, but his father didn't need to be. He hardly thought of this however, because before his father's eyes could return Mesheiko's head had already hit the pillow on his cot. His eyes closed before he could hear Midori respond, but the memory of her still swam inside his head and flooded his dreams. Now, he could rest in peace.

“Of course.” Midori replied softly after Mesheiko made his request. As the short exchange between father and son took place, Midori simply smiled at the two men, a faintly admiring gleam shining in her eyes when her gaze rested on Mesheiko. He deserved his rest (he had been up most of the day, hadn’t he?), and it was good to see that he was going to get a start on that, even though she would have liked to talk with him a little more. But, then again, she’d have much more time to talk with him wouldn’t she? The days traveling, the peaceful time at her village… For a moment she dazed, smiling, contently daydreaming and awaiting that time. However, she soon broke out of her gaze, politely listening to the short conversation before her. Almost immediately she noticed, however, that Mesheiko’s father had turned his gaze toward her, somewhat quizzically. Relieved that she had just gotten the just of the conversation, Midori smiled brightly at him and spoke softly, for she had swiftly noticed that Mesheiko had descended onto his pillow. “I probably ought to go soon.” Midori replied shyly, smiling apologetically at Mesheiko’s father. She really did not wish to intrude upon Mesheiko or his dad, and she really had no business disturbing the other patients. And, honestly, she’d like to see if there was a bathhouse nearby… She really was a filthy mess. Not that she was looking forward to being surrounded by a gossiping group of her peers. She only hoped Mesheiko's father did not think her rude for leaving. Nodding politely in good-evening, Midori turned to leave. THREAD ENDED
