Yasu was looking at her feet, her mind feeling squeezed to a pulp for no real reason. She wished she had never been sent on that stupid mission. She wished she could have declined. At that moment, all she wanted to do was lay in her bed in the Fire Nation, listening to her maid sing quietly to her as she had when Yasu was just a young girl at the age of seven. Yasu Al missed the reaction of the leader toward his second-in-command, but as he began to speak, she lifted her head slowly to look up at him. He said some words that Yasu felt she had missed, and then with a wave of his hand the men holding her loosened their grip and she relaxed slightly. She took a glance at her arms...They were red from how they had been holding her.
Yasu watched as he gripped his hands behind his back, and then her eyes fell back onto his face. At least I will be released with my weapons, she thought, Though I see a lashing in the future for being captured. She held in a sigh. That was just what she needed. "As long as I am released with my bow and arrows, I will be fine and will not try to escape," she said. Now she stood up straighter, her eyes closed for a moment as she took a deep breath and let it out. I will be cooperative. I will not try and kill the leader because he bothers the living hells out of me. I will not fight them. She let out the breath. In this world, we are not the enemies, but unsaid allies. They may not know it, but I do. I acknowledge the fact, and I will not break my pact. She reopened her eyes as Hissun informed her that they would leave when their scouts returned.
She nodded respectfully. She knew her place. Now she would just be silent. Listen. Watch. And not talk. Her best way of surviving this. She sighed heavily, but kept her posture. She could only hope that she would not be discriminated for her being of Fire Nation.

Naru looked over at the other soldier holding the water pouch. He must be a waterbender Naru thought to himself. The soldier appeared to be about 16 or 17 and was staring into the trees at a waving branch. Could it be fire nation? Naru thought. He stared into the forest at the branch. It made him feel like he was doing something important rather than getting in the soldiers way. He leaned down and put his hand to the ground. What was it is Grandfather taught me about feeling the Earth Naru was thinking. He pressed his hand into the ground and sunk it under the soil then concentrated as hard as he could. It was like he was seeing things from every direction, but his skills were so basic that it was incredibly blurry. He saw the trees and there roots, a small animal crawled along a few yards away, and he squatted in the middle. Naru focused towards the tree and saw a blurred object slowly crawling away, it was eaither a hog monkey, or a human squatting down. There was only one way to make sure. Naru took a breath then sharply exhaled as he struck the ground with his other hand. A surge went through the ground and a rock jutted out of the ground under the whate ever it was crawling away. "Aaaaugh" an unseen person yelled. The person stood up revealing themself to be fire nation. The man launched a fire ball at Naru then began running. Naru stood up quiclky and stomped the ground placing a boulder in the air in front of him. The fire ball hit the boulder hard sending it flying back into Naru. He and the boulder flew back 10 feet and fell to the ground in a pile of dirt. "FIRE NATION" Naru coughed loudly.

By the time Naru's earthbending had revealed the presence of some one else in the woods, Aden had already broke into motion. The young waterbender, along with the spearwielding warrior, broke off at an angle to flank the exposed scout. The Fire Nation man sent a fireball back at Naru, causing Aden to look back in concern, but it was apparent that the young boy had survived the attack. With that peace of mind, Aden picked up his pace and reached a small clear area where there were no trees between him and the fire scout.
The third Water Tribe warrior had launched a sling bolt at the Fire Nation soldier and then quickly moved to help Naru. The bolt was dodged by the Fire scout, who then quickly turned his attention to the two warriors approaching his flank.
Aden had already pulled out a small amount of water as he'd approached and had worked to freeze it into a dense sphere of ice. The Fire scout shifted his stance to face the young waterbender and his comrade, then unleashed a trio of rapid fire blasts. Aden rolled under the first one that was aimed toward him and immediately retaliated by sending his ice ball rocketing toward the firebender as he finished his attack. The water tribe spearman managed to side-step one of the fireballs, but the last one hit the ground at his feet and sent him rolling away to try and extinguish the flames.
The ice ball flew as fast as an arrow and before the firebender could even survey the aftermath of his attacks, the frozen projectile ricocheted off his helmet with a loud 'Clang!' The Fire scout's head rocked back and his ears rang, but still he remained standing. Aden quickly regained control of the ice ball, which had chipped but was still intact, and brought it around once more to bash the firebender on the other side of his helmet. The man spun with the impact of the second strike and fell to the ground, though he still attempted to rise. The ice ball had broken in half on that strike, so Aden pulled out more waer from his waterskin, forming a larger ball of ice, and then slammed a final blow down on the middle of the firebender's back.
The Fire scout dropped flat to the ground and did not try to rise again. Aden exhaled deeply from the end of the fight and quickly withdrew the ice back into his waterskin. He backstepped slowly, his eyes glancing around for any other threats, before he turned and sprinted to help his injured warrior.
Once he got his comrade out of harm's way they would need to report the presence of more scouts in the area. The Tribe needed to prepare for battle.

Leading the new woman and Liung over to Hissun--Now where did young Naru run off to?--Chamir couldn't help but wonder if the warparty may turn into a caravan of some kind at this rate.
And this would-be-scout-constantly-yelling-she-is-not-Fire-Nation-girl... What of her anyway? It's hard to say whether or not she is a scout, but all the same maybe she should be gagged. Or maybe even knock the dear unconscious. At her rate she'd let her people know she's here with her constant prattling.
Yet those thoughts were coming to a halt moments after hearing a magnified crackle sound.
Sounds like a twig snap and a fireside pop, trying to discern a particular sound.
Then came the large fup like sound from a mass of birds taking flight. Followed quickly by the dull yell of 'Fire Nation' coming from the same direction.
Chamir's personal conclusion made him blanch and pause for a moment. Trying not to gulp audibly.
Managing his courage to present a brave face, he began to draw his machete and turned to Liung for any acknowledgement.
Looks like this is it... my first meeting with living fire soldiers... beloved and ancestors preserve me.

Yasu was relaxing a bit more now; yes, she'd be released at the net town. Enough time for the Rebellion to move off to their next destination, but not enough time for the soldiers she had been watching to escape. The Water Tribe soldiers that held her seemed to be relaxing quite a bit as well, as one begant o speak with the other soft enough to not be heard by others around them that might snitch to their leader. She wasn't listening however; their prattle was nothing for her. She began to draw a map in her mind of where the soldiers might have gone off to. Surely not too far; she'd hate to have to walk a long way. She held in a large sigh. The good thing was, she was trusted enough to be released with her weapons. Hopefull nothing bad will happen to trigger the hatred from the leader, she thought.
"Fire Nation!"
The yell reached her ears in a matter of seconds and left her body feeling cold. The Rebellion Member must have gotten away by now, surely he was not captured. But then the sounds of flame and eath being moved reached her ears and she realized that this was no Rebellion member. It was a scout from the Fire Nation army she had been watching before. Her Water Tribe soldiers stiffened immediately and it got deathly quiet in the large group of soldiers and people. Yasu felt like she wanted to cry; leave it to her to jinx things up jsut as they were getting good.The soldiers holding held her tightened their grasps once more, leaving her clenching her teeth. The army had caught up, and the Tribe people should be preparing for battle. She sighed heavily, lowering her head so that, once more, hair drooped along her cheekbones like a veil.

As Aden approached his fellow soldier he realized that his clothes were still smoldering. The young bender swiped his arm forward and doused the flames creeping up the other warrior's clothing with a splash of water. Breathing heavily, the other Water Tribe warrior looked up at Aden with gratitude and stood up quickly. The man, perhaps a few years Aden's senior, patted down his pants and the bottom of his thick shirt. The clothes had holes burned in a few spots and were partially blackened, but he otherwise seemed unharmed. "Guess it's good I was dressed for winter," the soldier remarked, tossing Aden a smile.
The younger waterbender responded simply with a nod and quickly scanned the area around them. "That must have been a scout from the same war party as the girl," he concluded. "Go tell Hissun and the others to prepare for battle. I'll check the firebender for anything useful." The older warrior muttered his agreement and retrieved his spear before sprinting back to inform the others of the danger. Aden watched him go and took a moment to register the situation of the slinger and Naru. They seemed to be fine, so he trotted toward the fallen body.
Aden dropped into a crouch beside the fallen firebender and immediately noticed a pouch on the man's belt behind his right hip. He lifted up the flap and reached for its contents, but was disappointed to find not dispatches or anything pertaining to battle, but a small bag filled with what appeared to be crispy red flakes. Out of sheer curiosity, the young waterbender picked up one and touched it to his tongue, but immediately spat at the flaming sensation that filled his mouth. The flakes were ridiculously spicy to the Northern boy who'd never tasted such potent flavor in his life. He threw the bag aside and lifted up the bender's side to roll him over.
A groan from the firebender sent Aden into a burst of motion that put him on his feet in the span of a heartbeat. His hand gripped the hilt of his knife and he'd already drawn it partially from its sheath. The firebender's face was hidden under the skull-like mask of the Fire Nation's military, and for that Aden was somewhat grateful. It made it easier to think of his opponent as inhuman and undeserving of sympathy, but it still proposed the problem of not being certain his opponent was finished. Not willing to take the chance, Aden exhaled deeply to steady himself and then unsheathed his knife...
Only a few minutes later, Aden was on his way back toward the rest of his war party. In one hand was a small rolled up scroll that he'd recovered from the inside of the firebender's breastplate. His face was set with a grim expression and the paper in his hand was stained red on one end.

Poor girl, Chamir thought. Whether she was a scout or not, whether her story was true or not, whether she is an ally or not no longer mattered. With Naru sighting Fire Nation soldiers there’s no guarantee of anything for her. Turning back to where she was held. Bound and guarded.
And here he stood, tightly gripping the cylindrical hilt of his machete. Turning the natural mahogany color of his knuckles whitish and aching his palm. At least he was no longer shaking. But that still did not change the fact Aden had yet to return. Naru had returned safely. As did the man Aden partnered up with, along with burn spotted and blackened clothing.
Of course the man assured everyone that Aden was all right. That the boy stayed merely to find anything useful on the downed bender’s person while he return to report and seek the aid of one of the waterbending healers among them.
The bushes leading into the woodlands began shuddering and shaking. Chamir bent his knees and dropped his machete to his midsection, tilting it into a horizontal position.
And began to shiver again.
Bursting onto the scene Aden, grim resolve written upon his face, sprinted his way towards Hissun, greeted by Chamir’s toothy grin as he passed by.
Once the boy passed Chamir let out a long, sustained audible sigh of relief.

Aden only spared a moment of eye contact for Chamir as he hurried past, his mind kept focused on the task at hand. Numerous eyes followed his advance as he made his way through the other members of the war party to get to Hissun. More than a few took note of the blood on his hands and drew out their own weapons.
A few moments later, Aden approached the group of officers standing at the center of the cluster of warriors. Hissun stood between his two subordinates with the other warrior who'd fought beside Aden only a short distance away. "What news?" the elder leader asked, his face set into a calm, but serious expression.
Aden stepped closer toward his commander and gave a slight bow, extending one hand forward to present the scroll he'd found on the firebender. Hissun looked at the scroll for a moment, obviously taking note of the blood-stained edge and the flecks of red on Aden's hand, before he reached up and took the parchment. "They're orders from a general to find and eliminate a rebel group in the area," the young bender explained, even as Hissun's eyes scanned the unfurled scroll. Aden stepped back and glanced over at Yasu Al standing off to the side between a pair of soldiers. "She may have been telling the truth," he added after letting his leader finish reading.
Hissun rolled up the paper and handed it to the officer beside him. "Prepare for battle," he said simply, turning his head to regard the captive rebel girl. Beside him, his two officers went into the process of ordering the troops to form up and bring the reserves of water up from the rear. Meanwhile, Hissun called out to the men holding Yasu Al, "Release her..." He paused for a moment, considering the options, until he ordered, "Return her weapons but keep her under close watch.... She'll have a chance to show her allegiance soon enough."

She felt eyes on her, but she gave no recognition. She kept her head low, her breathing ever, her hair still in her face. She had no business to look up and meet the eyes of those who peered at her. She knew what they were thinking: 'Look at the firenation scout, she is a danger to all of us and has lied to our leader. She has killed many people.' But she hadn't. Not innocent ones, at least. She shut her eyes tightly as her bottom lip quivered. She had a bad feeling in te center of her gut. She let out a deep sigh and one of her guards glanced at her in surprise at the sudden shudder the girl gave.
Yasu Al was only concerned with a few of her surrounding. That including the sudden entrance of the waterbender that had so taken her amusement when hse was first capture. He was just now walking into the grounds once more, and she lifted her head just slightly to see what he had in his hands. It was a scroll. And blood. Lots of it. She lowered her head and sighed as the leader spoke to the waterbender. She cringed at the sound of his voice against the deathly silence that had taken over the clearing shortly after the cry of "Fire Nation". They were talking about the scroll, the waterbender speaking. Suddenly her head snapped upward, startling one of the gaurds on her right out of his daze. "They're orders from a general to find and eliminate a rebel group in the area." Her lips twitched to upturn into a smirk. Beat that! she thought, shove that up your--
"She may have been telling the truth." At this, Yasu Al held in that invisible smirk. She watched as the leader rolled up the scroll and announced that all the soldiers prepare for batttle. Suddenly he turned to face her and Yasu cringed once more. "Release her..." They released her and she rubbed her arms before throwing a smirk at the gaurd to her left, as if to say, 'Suits you right'. On order, they returned her bow and arrows and she swung the quiver over her should and hugged her bow lovingly. Nice to have you back in my arms, she said quietly to it in her mind. Her head snapped up instantly and her smirk disappeared, replaced with a serious line. "I am pretty sure that the Fire Nation charge is the one I was watching before I saw your army and got captured." she said. Her head turned to Aden, and she watched his back a moment before she slowly began to turn and walk toward the trees, hoping she didn't look like she was trying to escape. She pulled an arrow from the quiver and knocked it in place on the bow, pulling and un-stressing the string. Ah, to have you back in my hands, Bow, she thought with adoration.

Their clothes were rather simple. Solid colors of varying blue shade: indigo, sky, pale, baby, turquoise, and just blue. A few of them with colors of whites and greys. His clothes on the other hand would cause him to stand out in this group. It took time, in his profession, to scrap enough money… at least in the Earth Kingdom. But they felt worth it. His clothes were Earth Kingdom made. Soft cotton caftan with embroidered buttons, sky blue in color with white cuffs and wavy indigo colored sleeves. Solid sky blue color trousers and dusty travel beaten leather boots and an indigo head-cloth embroidered with gold about his head and a betrothal necklace—reserved for women—about his neck.
Amidst the reserves kept in the rear came a cart laden with their more numerous supplies. More numerous among these were wooden barrels of water, more for bending than drinking. Barrels that were easily unloaded and in possible prearranged positions without the need for added Chamir’s assistance. It seems many of these group had practiced and planned long before; deploying and arranging themselves quickly with trained precision, with little guidance and words from Hissun. Giving time for the war party’s leader to converse with his aides and General Liung.
A few steps here. A few steps there. Rearrange his head-cloth. There was little, if anything, that Chamir could do for and with them at the moment. Little more than stand idly as they prepared. Moving hither or thither, sharpening their weapons or suiting up in quilted fabric and boiled leather armor from polar animals.
Deftly out of place it felt. Amidst men he never grew up with, trained with but would at least fight with. Sighing he went to his knelt to his travel bag. Would his life had been something like this, would he be like Aden if he remained in the South? Would he be here in the Earth Kingdom now with his father? Would he even see his father again as he traveled with these men?
Moving his scabbard machete aside he sat on the ground. Grindstone in one hand and boomerang in the other. He spat on the grindstone and began sharpening the edge, opposite the handle, of his boomerang.

Naru tensed slightly and the mound of dirt on top of him spread apart in each direction as a cloud of dust. Nearby one of the Water Tribe warriors attacked the Fire Nation soldier then leaned down to help Naru up. Naru reached out and took the soldiers hand, coughing a little, and said, "Thank You" Naru bowed to the man and proceeded to dust himself off.
"Are you all right?" Liung said a little worriedly.
"Im fine..." Naru replied calmly, as he held his stomach, "...but that hurt" The boy looked into the woods in the direction the soldiers ran off in, and stared. "Does this mean there's gonna be a battle?" Naru said, with just a hint of hope on his face.
"Unfortunately..." Liung paused, and looked over to into the woods, "I think so"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soon the warriors had returned. The younger one...the waterbender returned carrying a scroll in one hand. Upon a closer look Naru noticed that one side of the scroll as well as the bender's hand was covered in blood. Naru cringed at the sight of it.
"They're orders from a general to find and eliminate a rebel group in the area," The older boy replied, "She may have telling the truth" Their leader rolled up the sroll and said grimly, "Prepare for battle" Immediately afterword he ordered that the girl they found be released. Now Naru knew there would be conflict. He had always hoped to fight the Fire Nation and make a name for himself on the battlefield. He could already see the clash unfold in his mind.
The bustle of the war party was not anything unfamiliar to Aden as he walked through the throng of warriors. Every seemed to be doing something to prepare for battle, whether it was gathering the supplies, sharpening weapons, scoping out vantage points and potential terrain features, or even meditating. Aden shuffled to the side to avoid bumping into a rather burly soldier carrying a pair of hatchets. Aden's eyes lingered on the glinting steel axe blades for a moment and he pitied any Fire Nation soldier that happened on that man in the coming battle.
Eventually he located Chamir and found him sharpening the edge of his boomerang. The story-teller looked quite out of place among many of the veterans, but Aden had to admire his determination to contribute. "Chamir," he called out as he approached. Aden was younger than the Southern Water Tribe man and so it seemed odd that he should be giving him orders, but still Aden realized that Chamir wasn't likely to know the workings of the war party and needed to be watched over. The young waterbender cleared his throat slightly in order to make his voice a bit more authoritative, and said simply, "It may be beast if you stay near me until this whole thing is over..."
******************************************************
Hissun stood in a circle with his two lieutenants and a senior scout, his hand casually stroking the small pointed beard on his chin. At the feet of the congregation was a drawing in the dirt of the soon-to-be battlefield. The scout was crouched down over the hastily-drawn map with a stick in hand, adding the last few details. "From what we've seen so far," the soldier said, pointing to a spot on the corner of the map, "The only Fire Nation activity detected has been from the Northeast. All the other scouting parties searched for nearly a hundred yards every other way and came up empty-handed. It's possible the scout that kid killed was heading some other way, but the most likely point of attack will either be from the North or the East..."
"And since the chances of them being so bold as to attack from directly along the trail, an ambush from the woods on our Northern flank is the most likely attack," added one Lieutenant.
"Unless they have warcrawlers," the other offered, his tone reflecting the seriousness of that possibility.
"But they're after a rebel group that's probably hidden in these woods," the first Lieutenant countered, "Warcrawlers would probably be too easy to spot and difficult to maneuver deep in the woods."
Hissun listened to his officers and the scout continue to posit ideas for several more moments, absorbing the various perspectives before speaking. "Perhaps," he began, immediately elicitng the attention of his officers, "we can draw them into an ambush of our own..." The officers looked at him intently, awaiting elaboration on the idea. Hissun acquired the stick from his scout and circled a few areas of trees around the trail and drew and X in the middle. "The Fire Nation does not know how many of us are out here and likely won't even realize that we're from the Water Tribe until they see us with their own eyes. I believe the best strategy would be to create the illusion of a small camp on the far edge of the trail and hide the majority of our warriors and benders here, here, and here..." He tapped the three circled areas on the map.
The officers hummed in thought as they evaluate the idea, and soon enough they were beginning to nod. "But what if the Fire Nation spots the warriors in the trees before they commit to attacking the false camp?" one asked.
"We'll need to make sure the gap on the North side is wide enough to allow the enemy to pass through," the other officer answered for Hissun, "And we can keep sling-throwers and the rest of our warriors in reserve on the Southern side behind the false camp.... This idea could work."
Hissun nodded and he turned to look at his soldiers around him. "General Liung," he called to the elder Earth Kingdom officer standing nearby, "Would join us for a moment? There's a matter I wish to discuss."
After attending to Naru Liung began to walk around amongst the soldiers. Many of them didn't know his rank and simply looked at him then returned to what ever it was they'd been doing. However, others had overheard his greeting from Chamir and would turn and bow as he passed. Liung had been retired for so long he was not quite used to the amount of authority he held. He had taught the young Earthbenders of his home village, including Naru whom he had worked extra hard, but the greetings of children were far from the bows and salutes of adult soldiers. Liung had always loved for Naru very much. At times he was more of a son to him then his own son, Narus father. He had been overjoyed when his granddson had discovered his gift and eagerly began to teach him. The old man was quite proud of Naru's progress and had considered passing down their families style to him when the time came. But that was a very long time from then.
Liung noticed a gathering of several soldiers and decided to listen in. Almost immediately their leader turned to Liung and said,"General Liung,would you join us for a moment? There's a matter I wish to discuss."
Liung paused for a second stunned, then replied,"Of course, what is it you wish to discuss?"
“Chamir,” he heard called. Looking up from sharpening his boomerang young Aden approached him. Coming closer, “It may be best if you stay near me until this whole thing is over…” the youth’s voice trailed off.
Taking a moment to look around, for effect, he then replied; “That would certainly be most appropriate,” he nodded. “I sort of feel out of place and in the way,” sheepishly grinning, “not having trained or fought alongside you before. It’d be nice to not be in the way now and later, now would it?”
Checking the edge of the boomerang he then set the grindstone back into his travel bag and began digging inside it once again. Reaching under the pipa that was safely tucked inside it to pull out both his sheathed whalebone knife and boomerang sheath. Standing up, “So is there anything we should do,” while tying the knife to his hip opposite the his dha. Reaching back down he strapped the boomerang sheath to his back, then sheathing the boomerang itself behind him he clasped Aden on the shoulder, “But try not to worry about me too much little brother,” with an eye closing grin. “You’ll distract yourself from protecting yourself which will make me have to worry about you which will distract me from protecting myself which will make you worry about me which will distract you from—well you get the idea!” He laughed, hoping to take some pressure from the boy, around a decade his junior.
He stood back for a moment. Placing a fists on his hips and a daring grin on his face. "DASHING am I not!"
Aden remained silent as Chamir replied to his suggestion. The elder, but less combat-experienced tribesman seemed to understand Aden's concern and was doing a fair job of making sure that he didn't dwell on it. The younger waterbender was not very social, but he still had a knack for reading people's intentions. He merely nodded after Chamir had agreed to stay near him, and hummed his agreement at the point the storyteller had brought up. In battle, one's primary concern should always be self-preservation. When you're attention is on the man next to you, you're likely to miss the blade that strikes you down...
"DASHING am i not!" Chamir asked, posing in his full battle gear. The straps of the boomerang sheath crossed his chest and the pair of blades on his hips seemed to make him look a bit more formiddable, but his grin all but cancelled out any threat his weaponry presented. And yet, Aden managed to offer a slight smile of amusement.
"Indeed," he said simply, crossing his arms over his chest. "But we may have to don something a little less-flattering before the battle..." The younger bender jerked a thumb over his shoulder toward a pair of soldiers who were unloading a stack of dark indigo and forest green blankets. Some were from the North Pole while a few others had been obtained from the last stop in Zhy. Aden had noticed several men climbing a few of the nearby trees and had guessed they might be employing an ambush in the coming battle. "These blues are kind of noticeable in the woods," he elaborated, tugging at his own shirt, "So we might need the cover if we're staging an ambush."
************************************************************
As the retired General approached Hissun, the leader of the War party offered a slight, respectful bow. "I was told you were an earthbender," he began, stepping back and gesturing toward the map to acquaint the older general with the layout they had drawn. "We may have need of your skills in the coming battle... Our warriors will be stationed here, here, and behind a false camp here," he prodded the three locations in the trees with a stick as he named them. "When the fire nation attacks, they will likely try to overwhelm what they percieve as a small camp with a concentrated attack from whatever benders they have. That will cause them to line up on the edge of the trees, in which case they will be slightly apart from the rest of their troops. Once they initiate they're attack, I will need you and your grandson to create a barrier of earth between these benders and the soldiers behind them."
Hissun paused, letting the Earth kingdom general absorb what had been said before finally finishing his explanation. "At this point, our warriors and several of our most powerful benders will swarm the firebenders on this side of the wall while two groups of mixed benders and warriors engage the regular Fire nation soldiers by dropping from the surrounding trees."
