Reed could hear the sadness in Jialing’s voice. Slowly, Reed continued to brush the loose feathers and grime from the ostrich horse. Yeah, good going, Reed! His mind said scolding him. I didn’t hear ‘You and Jin are the only ones who don’t critized me..’ Nope. I heard just Jin! Why’d you have to go critizing people, Jerk!!
Reed didn’t know Jialing had been through so much as to have her parents on her case every minute of her life. That wasn’t right. Reed finished with the second ostrich horse’s feathers. Once again he hung the rag over his shoulder and soon plucking a feather off his sleeve and moving his view up to meet Jialing’s. “. . . Why don’t we change the subject…” He said opening the gate to get out. NO! His mind yelled t him This is the perfect time! She’s emotional and all need of conforting! Take advantage of the moment! Kiss her! Kiss her now! Reed looked back to Jialing for a few seconds then walked out of the pen. I’m such an idiot. . . . .

Jialing would follow him, having finished with the Ostrich-horses face and tail. "That'd be nice.." Her quite demeanor than vanished as she followed him, a mischevious grin crossing her face. "So Reed.. Who was this girl your aunt was setting you up with?" She poked him in the back with a finger, before sliding up on the next ostrich-horse and beginning to wipe away the dirt and loose hair from that one's face and beak. He had struck her curiousity.. Just what kind of simple, average farm girl was Mistah Reed being hooked up with? She leaned around the Ostrich-horse's neck and lifted at him. "Hmm? Or do you not know her name? Even a village's name would be nice.."

Reed pondered over the questions… “I’m not to sure of the name. . .” He said slightly tilting his head before getting to the ostrich horse feathers. “ All I remember was that my aunt told me she was really pretty and would grow up in to a ‘fine’ young woman to be wed to.. . . .Hmm. . . I also remember I didn’t like girls cause I though they had koodies.” Reed said holding his chin with his fingers.
Jialing then struck him with the ’what village’ question. Reed shrugged his shoulders, “Eh, I don‘t remember her name but it was just some girl from Lochan. ." He said waving aroud his rag to get some of the feathers and such off.

"Oh, Lochan.." She turned her head as if nodding. Well that was -- "Wait.. Lochan?!" She whipped her head at him, her brown eyes wide and shining as she leaned over the ostrich-horses back. "Oh you just gotta give me a name now, Reed! I'm from Lochan!" Jialing was similing brightly, mostly at the prospect of being able to humiliate him and his intended.. "Was it Kauei? Or.. Ainiko? Mishaiko?" She rattled her brain, trying to think of names off the top of her head. "Miyugi? Ravi?" Jialing cursed under her breath.. her village was tiny.. under 500 people and she still didn't know all their names?! Well it had been years.. and maybe the girl had moved years ago..

“Yeah, Lochan,” Reed said dusting off the feathers once more. “Reed stumbled backa few feet as Jialing leaned over the ostrich horse. “I don’t remember her name!” Jialing started to list names:
“Kauei?” “No.” He replied still freak out by Jialing’s out burst. Reed had never even heard of the name Kauei. It was a pretty name though. “Ainiko?” “Who?” “Mishaiko?” “Uhh. .Wait!. . . . No.” “Miyugi?” “Who??” “Ravi?” “Are any of these girls actually real people???” Reed said grabbing a hand -ful of hair. “Jialing, I. . don’t. remember. The girl’s.. name,” He said slowly. “If it means that much to you I’ll just ask my mom or my aunt when we get to tachi Dai. . .” Reed said wiping the feathers.

Jialing narrowed her eyes. "I hate you." She spat, in a voice thick with sarcasm as she rolled her eyes away from him and went back to her work brushing out the Ostrich-horse. "You better ask.. it'd be good blackmailing material.. and I want black mailing material!" She sang in a sing-song voice, before turning towards him and grinning. She grew silent, save for the soft swish of the brush in the tail of the ostrich-horse. Suddenly, she lifted her head, an evil gleam in her eye. "What about a family name? Or even what her family did?! You gotta remeber something..." Course, Jialing had been promised to her betrothed since she was like 10 years old.. and never once did she even meet him, or even get a name.

“I was never told her family name,” Reed said finishing up on the ostrich horse. “ Ummm. . . . . I think she came from a family of textile makers or something. My Aunt asked her parents if she could have some of her work to give to me and they agreed. It was really beautiful. I still have it in my old room back home. I can show you when we get there.” He finished off. Reed walked out of the gate. “Ugh. . . Ostrich horse stink. . .” He said walking out of the room. “I’ll go talk to Kai and see how close we are to the main land. Hopefully we’ll be there by the end of the day,” Reed said looking over his shoulder.

Textile makers..? Jialing thoughts froze, a dry chuckle escaping her once Reed had left the hold. She shook her hand, lifting a hand to her head and running her grime-covered fingers through her hair. "Heh.. well.. Lochan had a few textile makes.. Only the Rukiminis and the Xiangs. The Rukiminis were a large, extended family, maybe five girls all together.. where as her family, the Xiangs.. were small and she was the only girl. "It's gotta be a Rukimini girl.." Jialing muttered as she left the Ostrich-horses, placing the brush in the wooden crate of other grooming supplies. She dusted her hands off on her pants, adding a new layer of dirt and dust to the clean fabric. It just didn't feel like her clothes without dirt on them.. Jialing then brushed back her hair, only to have it stick back up like it always did.. and followed Reed back up Deck.

Reed made his way up to the deck, Jialing still a distance behind him. His boots made tapping noises as he walked across the to the stern. He walked up the stairs that were used to get up the stairs and he stopped by Kai who was currently looking at the compass.
Kai had his pipe in his mouth and looked to Reed. “ Have fun?” He asked temporarily taking his pipe out of his mouth. “ Yeah, loads,” Reed said leaning against the rails by the wheel. “Hey, Kai,” Reed started. “Yeah,” He said once again taking his pipe out of his mouth. “Do you remember the girl that my aunt tried to set me up with when I was a kid?” “Oh, yeah,” Kai said exhaling smoke, “The girl from Lochan. I heard from your aunt she was a catch.” “Yeah. . .Well, do you remember her name?” Kai curled up his lip, “ Having a sudden intrest in getting to know someone a little better?” he asked nudging Reed. “Nah. . Me and Jialing--” “Jialing and I.” Kai said cutting him off. “Right. .Jialing and I were just talking about it.” Kai shrugged, “Sorry I couldn’t help ya’ out. Your aunt ill definetly know. Your mother probably too.” He said slightly turning the wheel.
Reed then remembered what he was up here to ask, “About how much longer to the main land, Kai?” “About an hour after night fall.” Kai finished off. Reed smiled. Night fall was about four or five hours away. He was closer to home than he thought.

Jialing emerged from under the deck, and stood on the stairs, listening to the converstation happening above her. She leaned against the wood and folded her arms across her chest and her head bowed foreward. Her mind swam with thoughts, but the more she listened to Reed and Kai talk, the more.. it became harder to focus those thoughts. Her head nodded forward, and then bounced up again. Realizing what was going on, Jialing cursed the ocean under her breath.. she had forgotten how.. sleepy a choppy ocean could make her. Stifling a yawn with her hand, she pushed herself the remainder of the way up the stairs. Maybe the sun would wake her up. "So we're heading to Tachi Dai..?"

The conversation between the two boys, Or a teenager and an adult as it might be put, was silents Reed and Kai's eyes shifted to Jialing. Reed nodded as did Kai. " That's were good ol' Minge is," Kai said still maintaining the wheel. Reed rubbed under neath his right eye with his right pointer finger.
A few hours past and the sun had already set a little while ago. There was a crescent moon out tonight. Reed sat on the bow of the ship carving small piece of wood into a four legged creature. A night breeze rolled in, cold and steady. Reed could see the main land. It looked as all it was were ripples in the ocean mist. Home was only an eye's glance away.

Jin came padding up to Reed, and stared at what the man was making in his hands. He sighed, and flopped down onto the deck of the ship, legs spread out the side. His jaw was against the wood, eyes looking up at Reed as his tail thumped lightly against the deck.
Jia herself was in the shrouds of the ship, sitting in one of the crows nests on a mast. Her legs hung over the edge, her arms folded across a railing as she stared out across the dark, ocean, the light from the moon and stars illuminating the waves. Tachi Dai was.. a few days travel from Lochan. The two villages had been close, despite Lochan's ruined-ness.. Would it be worth it to go home? To try and see her family? How would they react? Her mother would probably go hide in her workshop, sitting at her loom and never emerge. Jia sighed, and buried her face in her arms, listening to the wind.

Reed leaned against the railing. He hummed a tune that he would soon sing. Yes, Reed was going to sing. When he was little, since most of his cousins were girls, his cousins would always tell him to come sing with them. And being a little 7 year old Reed would always do so. To tell the truth Reed wasn’t a bad singer. His voice was still rough but he did have a well developed voice. Reed saw Jin lay down next to him. He smiled, he was, after all, carving a little wood dog, none other than Jin. Giving Jin a pat on the head then continuing his work, Reed started to sing quietly:
What day is it? And in what month? This clock never seemed so alive I can't keep up and I can't back down I've been losing so much time
Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do Nothing to lose And it's you and me and all of the people And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you
All of the things that I want to say just aren't coming out right I'm tripping on words You've got my head spinning I don't know where to go from here
Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do Nothing to prove And it's you and me and all of the people And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you
There's something about you now I can't quite figure out Everything she does is beautiful Everything she does is right
Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do Nothing to lose And it's you and me and all of the people And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you and me and all of the people with nothing to do Nothing to prove And it's you and me and all of the people And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you…”

Jialing lifted her head off her arms, one brow lifted high on her forehead as she heard.. a voice.. singing. Like a dead dog.. Jialing thought, putting her fingetips to her forehead as she tilted her head to the side. With a heavy sigh, she bent to the side, hiking up one of her legs that had been dangling. She began to undo the laces on her boot, fingers brushing against the rabbit's fur. Should she throw the boot at him? To shut him up? Her hands paused in their loosing of the laces.. and she sighed again. Jialing left her boot on, fighting the tempation to hurl it at his head. Laying her head down on her arms once again, Jialing closed her eyes.

Reed stopped as he heard a click above him. Reed tilted his head back and looked up. Damn. . . .That was . . .embarrassing. . . Reed left the finished wood carving of Jin and set it down next to the lying dog. Standing up Reed walked away escaping further humiliation and/ or embarrassment. Shoving his hands in his pockets and tilting his view to the floor. Reed continued to walk towards the stairs that lead below deck. Then, to his surprise, he saw: Land. They weren’t suppose to be to the main land for another few hours. Kai was steering the ship to the port. You’d think he’d get tired after a while. . . “Reed.” Kai started “ Go get three ostrich horse.”
Kai steered the ship in to the port. The anchors dropped into the water with a large splash shooting up water. Reed lead the ostrich horses down the wooden walk, plank thing, and stopped waiting for Jialing and Kai. Reed jumped onto one of the ostrich horse , still holding onto the reins, “Come’ on!”
