She stumbled forward, the chains of her former shakles slaming into her back as they drove her, among others, further into the rail car with the other women. Some of them stared wide eyed at her, like doe. Some held their children close, others were sitting. They all kept their quiet eyes on her, their faces smudged with dirt and coal and soot from the fires. There wasn't many of them. Most of the village had escpaed, made it out. About fifty were just plain unlucky to be caught in the terror while over two-hundred escaped. Jialing straightened, a hand on her bony hip and feeling the soreness undernethe the skin there. Her lip curled downward into a frowning scowl. She was going to be stuck with a bunch of sniveling woman who were crying over lost husbands or children. Greeeeeeeeeeeeat.
She had lost Reed. And Jin. Her precious dog.. the puppy she had stolen from a farm and hand raised with bits of meat and milk here and there. It had been a stupid move and she was regretting it the first night of holding the crying, whimpering puppy close to her chest all night. But he had quickly bonded with her, growing into the tall, lean hunting dog that she had come to know He accompained her anywhere, even upward into trees where he would lay on thick branches with his legs on either side of the branch. He was her faithful companion. sleeping next to her on cold nights. Losing him, not knowing if he was dead, was what stung the most. She was not used to being without his heavy body heat standing next to her, the stench of his mud covered coat.
But it was Reed with whom she was angry with. How could he have been so stupid? Lunging at a Ostrich-horse like that?! He had grown up on a farm, for Spirit's Sake! She felt her face growing red with angry the more she stared at the patheticness around her. A cynic at heart, Jialing pressed her lips together tightly as she stared forward. The gazes left her, went to the last few girls trickling in and then, the metal door was shut, leaving them all in the darkness save for what cracks of light slipped through the welds. They remained in the darkness, Jialing standing for what seemed like an eternity before the rail cars lurched forward, the whistle of the steam engine sounded, and she swayed on her feet like a unsteady cattle. They were on their way.
