Name: Aoru
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Group: Kyoshi Warriors
Nation: Earth Kingdom
Bender?: Nope
Physical Appearance: Aoru is tall for her age with a broad frame, standing at roughly 5'6" and weighing around 145 lbs. Her face is oval in shape, with high cheekbones. Her nose is a little on the broad side, short with very slight upturn to it at the end. Her skin is a pale shade of buff, which really stands out against her long dark taupe hair. Her hair is quite long, falling down to the small of her back and quite thick. She keeps it plaited into two braids, with the ends of the braids gathered into a tight bun at the back of her head, creating a loop effect with the remaining length. A forest green strip of cloth is used to secure the bun in place on her head. Thick arching eyebrows arch over her pale asparagus shaded eyes, with thick eyelashes that frame them. Her lips are full and a little wide, and stand out quite a bit when she's wearing her make-up.
A lot of Aoru's height is in her legs, with a relatively short torso. Years of practicing tessenjutsu with the other Kyoshi Warriors has stolen some of the softness to her body that most girls her age would possess...but she's still rather curvy for her age. Well toned muscles are carried on her broad frame. Her arms are a bit on the long side, with large (and certainly not dainty) hands.
Clothing/Armor: Aoru's Kyoshi Warrior garb consists of several layers. The very first layer are tan shaded chest wrappings and undergarments. Worn over these is a gray asparagus colored undershirt, which is fitted to her body so that it doesn't become cumbersome as the additional layers of her clothing are added. Her legs are clad in gray asparagus fitted trousers. A forest green skirt is worn over her lower body, with a hem that falls easily to her ankles. The skirt is loose, allowing freedom of movement during combat and training. Over this she wears a camouflage green over shirt, which has a hem that extends clear down to her calf. A myrtle green stripe runs along the arms of this shirt, and a saffron shaded circle rests at the center of the stripe, situated about halfway down her bicep. Gray asparagus shaded bracers are strapped to her forearm, making her sleeves from the elbow up to her shoulder bulge a bit. Her hands are covered by myrtle green gloves, which have white cloth across the palms. Over her chest and back she wears padded asparagus gray armor, and two pauldrons are worn on her shoulders, connecting the back piece of the armor with the front piece. Myrtle green boots are worn on her feet, extending up her shins and coming to a stop just below her knee caps. She wears a myrtle green sash across her waist, which is used to situate her jingum and fan. A headband in the same shade is wore across her brow. At the center of the band is a saffron shaded disc, with a square cut from its center.
When in full Kyoshi Warrior garb, Aoru's face is painted in elaborate make up. White foundation is spread on her face, neck, and ears. Bright crimson lipstick allows her already full lips to stand out starkly against the white paint. Dark eyeliner is used to exaggerate the thickness of her lashes about her eyes, and black is used to extend her eyebrows.
Weapons: While Aoru is adept at hand to hand fighting, she is skilled with weapons as well. Her primary weapon is a bronze fighting fan, which is kept tucked in her sash, ready to be drawn when necessary. Aoru's secondary weapon is a jingum, a blade similar to a katana, though it is shorter and broader. Her own jingum has myrtle green clothed wrapped about the handle. Normally this is tucked in her sash as well. She also has a foldout shield, which has been proven useful in holding out against fiery blasts. The shield is attached to her left bracer and only folds out when she needs it.
Personality: Aoru is very proud and practical, carries herself with poise and refinement, and thrives on order, planning, and punctuality. She is often very quiet, choosing only to speak when she feels it is necessary. When Aoru does speak, it is usually after she has spent sometime carefully thinking over the current situation. She is not a fan of anything spur of the moment, and rarely one to be comfortable with 'flying by the seat of her pants' so to speak. As a Kyoshi Warrior...well, sometimes she's thrust into such action, whether she likes it or not.
Aoru has considerable patience...but there are things that do tend to get under her skin. She cannot stand disorder, and when chaos erupts it puts her on edge. Despite the fact taht she hates chaos, she can quickly get a handle on a chaotic situation, breaking things down analytically in her head as she tries to seek some sort of order where there is none. She also has little tolerance for indecisiveness.
Often its difficult to tell what is going through her mind. She rarely voices any sort of complaint, and even rarely lashes out even under the most extreme conditions. She chooses to internalize her problems and handle them without bothering others for help. There are some small signs that serve as an indicator to what emotions she may be feeling though. When in a relatively good mood, Aoru may occasionally whip out a witty quip or two. Smiles come easier to her, and just the air about her seems to feel light. When in a really pissy one? The tension about her is palpable, and everything about her is rather rigid, and she barely talks to anyone.
Of her strengths, her greatest is the ability to thrive when working under pressure. When the odds are stacked against herself and the other Kyoshi's, Aoru keeps her cool, stays calm, and doesn't allow herself to stress out. When many others might panic, she remains solid, steadfast. Of her weaknesses, her greatest would probably be the fact that she remains aloof, even amongst her sister warriors. For Aoru, she finds it hard to really open herself up to others, even more so to folks that aren't among the Kyoshi Warriors. While she gets along fine with the other warriors and works well as a member of the team, she has yet to really form any close bonds with any of the girls. Of the warriors, perhaps the ones she is closest with is Suki and Hana. Suki draws quite a bit of respect from Aoru, for being a great warrior, a wise leader, and fair in most matters. As for Hana...she just seems to mesh with the girl well. Often on missions, the two work together, and of the Kyoshi Warriors, Hana is the one she fights best beside. Whether its something on an instinctual level, or perhaps more, they read each others movements well, and their fighting prowess compliments one to the other.
Background: Aoru was born to one of the smaller villages on Kyoshi Island, one closer to the center of the island instead of being along the coast. Mae, her mother, had already given birth to three boys Neung, Song, and Saam before being blessed with their first girl. Aoru was the last child that Mae and Bi-daa (her father) would have. As a baby, Aoru was rather quiet. She wasn't one to like change or being passed around to others...and on those occasions, she would make her protests known, rather vocally. As she passed from infancy into toddler hood, this little trait of hers didn't seem to go away...but once she learned to walk, rather than just screaming, she chose to toddle away from what she didn't like. She grew to prefer playing with herself, though she wasn't above getting drawn in by her older brothers' games on occasion.
Despite the fact Aoru's family was very loving...she seemed to be almost a black sheep among them. Mae and Neung were both very jovial, very outgoing...and the boys were very boisterous and loud. All of them seemed very emotional, quick to express their feelings, often with little to no prompting either. Aoru tended to be very quiet, keeping to herself and rarely showing any outbursts of great emotion. She had few friends, and a lot of the times played simply games with on her own. It was while she was on her own that she caught her first glimpse of the Kyoshi Warriors.
Aoru had been out on her own, picking wildflowers to weave into a circlet for her head, when she noticed the richly garbed and decorated warriors running through their katas. She was five at the time...and knew of the Kyoshi's from overhearing the conversations of adults. She had never seen them in action though. Curiousity drew her closer, and she approached the group from behind, stopping several feet from them. She hunkered down amidst the tall grass...and watched. She was enraptured by their movements, the grace...the skill...the beauty of it all. She overheard the woman leading the kata that they were to meet again in this place the following morning. Aoru scampered off before she could be noticed, but she silently vowed to come back to the spot to watch them again.
The following morning, she showed up early...very early. She hadn't wanted to take the chance of missing the warriors in action. As she waited, Aoru tried to remember the kata the women had been practicing. It wasn't long before she was out there in the grass, trying to duplicate the motions. Her little kata was crude, and rough...but as the Kyoshi Warriors approached and chuckled at the little girl's display, the leader of their group saw potential. At first, Aoru was embarrassed to find she'd been caught...but when she was invited to join their group, the embarrassment seemed to pass. As the warriors practiced, gave her advice and allowed her to train with them that day, Aoru grew more excited...and found she loved it.
That evening, Aoru came home...and the normally very quiet girl suddenly was very talkative about the meeting with the warriors. It was very apparent that this was something that the girl was excited about. Given Aoru's enthusiasm, Mae and Bi-daa realized they had a rather difficult decision to make. In the best interests of their daughter, they made arrangements for her to begin training as a Kyoshi Warrior. After a very tearful good bye (well...mostly tearful from her family's end), Aoru was taken by the warriors to the main village, where she ended up training alongside Suki and some of the other girls she would later come to fight beside in the Earth Kingdom. She came to live with her aunt and her uncle (who were thankfully much more calm and collected) during that time.
Aoru came into her own in the years following. While she never really gained a close and personal bond with the other girls she trained beside, she got along well with them. She wasn't the very best among them either, but she was among the top ranked. When she wasn't training, Aoru assisted her aunt and uncle, who were herbalists. She learned to read and to write, learned basic mathematics and schooling with her cousins as well. Her life was...normal. There was no war on Kyoshi, and the island had long since kept out of the affairs of both the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom.
As she and the others grew older, flowering from adolescents into puberty...Aoru began to notice that she was...well...different. While some of the more bubbly girls would gush about some cute boy in the village, the quiet girl found herself unattracted to the opposite sex. In fact...she seemed to find that girls seemed more attractive to her. She was confused, unsure what to do about it...and was simply to introverted to even consider bringing the subject up to her aunt and uncle. A couple of years would pass before Aoru came to accept that it seemed her preferences were toward her own gender, though she never said a word to anyone regarding it.
Aoru was sixteen when, a major event occurred...one that would dictate her fate it seemed. The Avatar arrived on Kyoshi Island. At first, the young airbender and his traveling companions were mistaken as threats to the island. When Aang revealed he was the Avatar, the tension eased. A few days passed, and the trio enjoyed themselves...just as the islanders enjoyed playing host to the avatar and his friends. Sokka, who'd displayed himself as nothing short than a pigheaded male, had even managed to make ammends with Suki (who had thoroughly humiliated him) and the others, training beside them...in full Kyoshi Warrior regalia no less. The peace seemed as only a calm before the storm though. Zuko, banished Prince of the Fire Nation, arrived in pursuit of the Avatar. The Kyoshi Warriors leaped into action, attempting to defend their homes and defend Aang. In the end, it was Aang who had saved the day, but the village had been damaged badly.
After awhile of repairing the damaged homes and rebuilding...the warriors grew restless. Having the war brought to their shores stirred them...and soon, Suki was calling for warriors to come with her to the Earth Kingdom. Aoru, though she was very willing, was the last to volunteer. It wasn't that she was reluctant to leave her home: she simply wasn't one to jump into things rashly, without thinking things through. There was another tearful goodbye, as her family came to the main village to bid a tearful farewell to their daughter...and then she was boarding the boat with the other warriors to leave for the Earth Kingdom.
The warriors arrived in Zhy, where they proceeded to escort an ambassador of the Water Tribe to Ba Sing Se. For Aoru, the time had been rather trying, as she found the man to be a pompous prick. Still, she went about her duties, giving forth very little complaint about the Kyoshi Warriors charge. Along the way, they assisted villages and towns as they could, making as much of a difference as they could. Aoru found a budding respect forming for Suki...and while she was growing somewhat closer to the other warriors, she found herself drifting closer to Hana. At first, it was because Suki seemed to be pairing them up for various tasks and missions, or assigning them to share a duty. The more they worked together, the more Aoru seemed to mesh with the girl. Though Hana was a bit younger than herself, she was a very skilled fighter, more skilled than Aoru at any rate.
The Kyoshi Warriors eventually came across Major Bora Gan's Thunderfist Battalion. The group of young women joined their forces with the unit, and soon they were being sent out to find the Fire Nation princess and stop her...and hopefully send the rest of the Fire Nation's forces into disarray. Aoru and Hana ended up coming face to face with a formidable foe in the midst of the fighting, one Zilong. It was Zilong who defeated the pair...and the battle was lost. The next thing Aoru knew, she was awakening in a cage with the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors.
Aoru's fate is now in limbo, at the whims of a Princess who has nothing but cruel intentions in mind for her prisoners.
Sample RP: The breeze coming through the village was cold...and carried upon it the linger stench of smoke. The scene was so familiar to the young woman...painfully familiar. The Kyoshi Warriors had arrived at this village early in the morning...to find that the place had ransacked by a passing Fire Nation unit. It rankled at Aoru. These poor people could not truly be that big of a threat to the Fire Nation, yet that had not stopped them from burning their fields, reducing their livelihoods to char. On top of this many of the homes that had bordered the farmland had been burned down as well.
Such a waste. Such dishonor. This was unnecessary!
She kept her sentiments to herself...the norm for this particular Kyoshi warrior. Though her muscles were sore and aching from helping sift through what remained for the villagers and erecting shelters as needed, she offered no complaints. While the warriors' arrival had been too late to stop the soldiers that had comitted this crime, they could at least help as best they could before moving on to Ba Sing Se.
Aoru glanced over shoulder, watching as Kopa made idle chatter with the ambassador the group was escorting. Pompous. Arrogant. Pigheaded. And the longer they remained in this water tribesman's company, the more it seemed Aoru's considerable patience was pulled ever thinner. They were only a couple of days out from Ba Sing Se though. The ordeal would be over with, and they could all move on with their lives.
Several feet from her, she saw Aoi sit down, exhaustion written on her features. Aoru closed the distance, presenting the other warrior with a skin of water.
"Here. Take a breather."
As the other warrior quenched her thirst, Aoru's eyes glanced to the sun. It was nearly sun down...which hopefully would mean that they would be getting the chance to rest soon.
