Name:
Toph BeiFong
Age:
12
Nation:
Earth
Bender?:
Yes
Physical Appearance:
Toph stands a few inches shorter than the young avatar at about four feet and eleven inches. For her age it’s about average. Her body is compact with muscle and generally a good layer of dirt, only when her parents aren’t looking of course. She has baby fat covering most of her body though below it is the strength she needs to wield the earth like a master.
Her face is round with a petite nose and full lips like any other child. Toph’s eyes would be like her mothers, almond shaped and bright except, she was blind. This gives her a glazed over pale green without the shine a proper retinas would cause in her pupils. Her ears are small and shell shaped placed at her eye line on either side of her head. Her hands are smooth with calluses though they don’t stand out enough for her to obviously be an earth bender. She needs to hide this aspect of her life for now, her parents just don’t understand
She has small feet even for a girl her age which she keeps constantly on the ground so she can properly read the vibrations of the earth, because of that she dislikes wearing anything on her feet but will if the need arises. Her bangs are cut to the line of her jaw and are messy constantly scattered about her face unless they are pulled out of the way behind her ear. The rest of her ravens black hair hands down to her lower back through it is always kept up in a large bun so she doesn’t have to worry about it being in her way when she is moving about.
Clothing/Armor:
Toph wears three main outfits though she has many others at her disposal. The first is composed of a simple merry gold long sleeved dress made from soft cotton like fabric. Worn over this is a faded canary kimono with a green hem to it and a white trim along the inside lining it. Placed over this is a Chinese styled strapless dress, formless and lined in a forest green the upper most section is partitioned off from the rest of it holding her young waist nicely with elegant stitched patterns on the front. The outfit is what she’d wear in the company of her parents usually complimented with a sage green wrap hung about her arms and a gold and opal band to keep her hair in place.
The second outfit is for her comfort at night when she is settling down for bed much simpler than the first it is the same faded yellow color as a long sleeved one piece outfit hanging loosely over her knees with pants that at first glance appear as a skirt. It’s wrapped across her body from the left side to the right tied at the hem on the side with a light short sleeved jacket over it tied at the center in a loose bow.
Her last outfit is the one she uses when ever she sneaks off to fight, the vibrant greens depict the desire to strike out in the world, contrasting the whites and yellows of the subdued colors her parents have her dressed in. Even though she can not see the colors they show her as more of a colorful person than any other thing she may wear. A gold and green headband cut in the block style of earth kingdom clothing with tuffs of fur on either side of her head. The lowest layer is a baggy green shirt with wide sleeves hanging to her elbow and a pair of pants in the same fashion cut just below her knees. Over this she wears a pale yellow shirt with a wide Chinese collar folded left over right and clasped into place at the side. This hangs down over her pants while split at the sides and tied at the stomach with a leather belt with billet holes punctured into it and secured with small metal ringlets. Her wrists and ankles had green gold and forest green guards on them to provide a complete look to her uniform
Weapons:
None
Personality:
Toph is a scared little girl, insecure, clumsy with her emotions, and tired of being shoved into the category of a helpless blind girl by all that see her and scared of rejection from her parents and peers. It formed a natural need to rebel against everything and everyone around her as well as a protective mask of a quite well mannered daughter around her parents. This defense protects her from their accusations by proving them wrong at any cost, it makes her say things outright that may be better put in a more subtle manner. Sometimes she’ll hurt herself and her relationships with others mistaking honest concern for pity and in that case she doesn’t know when or how to apologize. Fits of anger are often unwarranted and only cause herself grief. Generally they aren’t very violent and are over as quickly as they started as her way of ‘smoothing thing out’. More often than not she feels like a stranger on the outside ‘looking’ in, not being able to fit in anywhere and instead of turning to her personality and bitterness she blames being a ‘poor little blind girl’
She hates that people want to take care of her, she feels that she can take care of herself although she is lacking the emotional support she so desperately needs turning it away because she feels like she has to stand on her own to be respected. Her feelings of inferiority cause her to be a recluse to others emotionally though it is unavoidable physically. Often rather than staying and arguing her point when she is clearly wrong she will walk away and try to ignore the problem at hand. When she becomes accustomed to people or has a random moment of need or tenderness she’ll talk about it instead of hiding all her feelings under a mask of strength.
Background:
Both Fong parents were happy to welcome their precious little daughter into the world, she had fine black hair the most adorable smile and last but not least, she was blind. Her mother fell into grief for a few months but both parents knew their daughter could never be a normal child. Their marriage must have been cursed if they had given birth to a girl who could not see.
Toph learned from experienced tutors from the time she was little, though she couldn’t see she was taught to write, needless to say she didn’t do very well unless she was guided by a teacher, after a few weeks she could memorize the movements of the brush enough to replicate them, but she could only do just that, replicate them. Characters she put down would over lap or be out of order and not in the proper position when set next to one another. If she wanted to get it perfect her hands would become black from the ink. Instead her parents turned to teaching her poetry. The young girl hated having to recite the phrases and stanzas memorizing the patterns. Toph was taught the ways of a court lady from dressing to acting. As was expected she hated it. There was nothing she could despise more than learning to act like a lady, to get a husband, who wouldn’t want her, because she was blind. It wasn’t until an earth bending teacher came to see if she had any skill in that, did she ever even enjoy learning.
The man at first made no sense to her. He’d say that she needed to feel the earth and be able to move it, she needed to stay connected to the ground but it usually ended with shouting and frustration on the part of the young girl. His words were trash to her, she needed to be lead from place to place like a poodle monkey. I was just too much for her and she began to act up, throwing fits constantly and smashing anything she could get her hands on, her parents passed it off that she was blind and obviously she couldn’t do such a thing to begin with. That was until one night she ran away from home, or at least a close proximity of it. Crying she'd found herself out of the town of Gaoling and into a cave far from her parents.
She'd overheard her parents talking, they wished they had a normal child, they wished she could see and be normal. Why was it her fault? Did she ask to be born unable to see? How could they blame her for something that wasn't even her fault. As her fingers gripped deep into rocky earth the young girl cried her little heart out, but before she knew what was happening her face was licked by a giant creature. Her heart fluttered with fear that she would be eaten or dragged home but instead a large muzzle of a badgermole curiously sniffed her andn something amazing happened, she giggled. In turn she licked his snout and the badger mole huffed in surprise. It went off into the cave moving it's claws in order to clear rock from it's path. Awkwardly she followed and duplicated his movements finding herself unable to bend and see the same way the badgermoles did.
For two weeks the little girl stayed lost with the giant creatures learning to see feel and live all over again, but eventually her parents found her. The torches used to light their way in the caves sent the badger moles burrowing far into the ground where Toph couldn't reach them. She began to cry with her parents finding her in tears, hinting them to the fabricated truth that she was simply lost and upset. After a while of coddling life with her family got back to normal although she had a new outlook on everything from some rather unlikely teachers.
During the day she allowed herself to be lead around, focusing on her studies, playing dumb and at night she would go out into the courtyard practicing, listening and learning on her own the ways of the earth. Few people mentioned her change in attitude, they figured she’d resigned herself to being blind, accepted her fate. Little did they know she now could do as she pleased, no more tripping over tables and walking into walls she had a new found confidence. Her earth bending teacher was depressed that he wasn’t seeing any results but every word he told her was stored in the back of her mind for later in the evening when she would apply it to her nightly wanderings.
One day years later as she was being led around town by the hand of her mother she heard someone shouting out through the crowds about an arena with the best the earth kingdom had to offer with a large title and prize on the line. Her interest had peeked and she memorized the place wanting to return to test her skills. Later that night she snuck out in a disguise she found in the attic. No one knew what to think of the girl who claimed to be an earth bender but one by one they fell to her power and she became known as the blind bandit
Sample RP:
The night air felt crisp against the young girl’s skin as she left the home she had come to think of as a prison. Making her way across the lawn her bare feet became damp from the dew on the grass. If it were green or brown, she couldn’t tell. What good was color to someone who couldn’t see? Had she ever felt this nervous before? The beating of her own heart echoed violently into her overly sensitive ears. The grin spread on her face wouldn’t allow the nausea to surface it’s self. This was the first time she’d been so rebellious, a part of her still chided ‘you’ll be caught’ but the rest of her screamed for this sweet freedom. Once she felt stone beneath her feet again the young bender knew she was on the right path. Nothing could stop her now. She was out of the courtyard. Now she only had to get to the arena, her raven hair was tied up into a bun at her back set with a headband. Simple green, so the shop owner told her. The style was hard to do by herself. Usually someone did her hair for her, but she could trust no one on this mission of hers. She covered her with a sash, she didn’t know how they’d react if they knew she was really blind, they may not even let her compete as it was.
The outfit was something she dug out of a trunk in the attic. It seemed simple enough, at least to disguise her. A dress would not do for what she was about to under go. “hey you” Her head turned in the direction of the man she sensed in the earth, he was looking at a sign, this was about the place but she needed to be sure.
“What’s a little girl doing out this late at night, won’t your ‘mommy’ be worried” The tone of his voice alone made her cringe, this was exactly why she was sneaking out. All he saw was a little girl, helpless and in need of assistance, poor little thing, outside late at night all alone, she’d most likely lost like a little spider puppy . . . it made her sick
“DID I ASK YOUR OPINION,WHATS IT SAY!” The man took a step back, obviously this got the point across, she would smirk but then he might think she was a push over.
“Tournament tonight, face the earth kingdoms finest warriors…..”
“Great, now you’re of no more use to me.” She stopped on the ground and felt the ripples the contact made flood through the ground bringing a mound of earth up connecting with his jaw and retracting back into the earth before the man could know what was happening. “Have you’re mommy check that booboo over” That was the last thing he heard before the small girl disappeared into the door way of the grand stone arena
