Name: Teo
Age: 13(possibly 12)
Nation: Earth
Bender?: No...
Physical Appearance: Teo has slate-gray eyes. His hair is iron black and has so much body that it's untameable. His lower legs--below the knee--are wrapped in bandages, from a withering burn from the Fire Nation.
His nose is unnoticeable, and does not stand out as small or large. He has a mouth that is always ready to smile, and rather large ears. He is about midsized for his age, though being unable to stand up makes it rather hard to tell how tall he'd be--he looks to be about 165 cm tall. The boy's arms are rather muscular, as they are used to allow him to travel.
His legs were burnt in the explosion, and the tendons and ligaments in his calves snapped in the heat, and were replaced by scar tissue. This means he can never walk, and makes his calves look deformed and blackened. Small, burnt feet were destroyed so thoroughly that they didn't grow correctly, and even if his calves would support him, they weren't. His lameness is rather complete.
Clothing/Armor: Teo wears a grass-colored collared tunic, which fastens by a small, dark green ribbon on the right side of his chest. This sleeveless tunic is rather plain, without much embroidery except for a pine-colored strip around the slits at his hips. Under this, he wears a gray, long-sleeved shirt that melds with his long, gray pants, that disapear under his bandages. His sleeves are covered by long, open fingered gloves, or possibly soft gauntlets. He also has a small black cap with the same color as his tunic in the trim. Because of his disability, his father fashioned him a wheeled chair to which glider wings may be attached.
Weapons:He doesn't tend to carry weapons around... Though he and his father happen to be working on a tank design...
Personality:A very strong sense of right and wrong, along with a mostly amiable personality, define this war victim. He isn't bitter, and is neither slow nor easy with his forgiveness. He is, not surprisingly, popular among people around his age. Perhaps it is because he adapted so well to not being able to walk... Or perhaps I am mixing up cause with fellow effect. The quality is rather hard to describe. An inner strength would probably suffice for our purpose.
As you would expect, he hates the Fire Nation and all that they stand for. The world domination by oppressing and murder is about as unlike his idea of right as possible.
He spends most of his time helping his father on some of the war machines that they plan to use against the Fire Nation, including new tanks and another hot air balloon. Any free time he gets he spends gliding, which is his one true passion. (Some of the villagers think that he must be the incarnation of an airbender because of just how much he loves to fly.) He has shown considerable talent in inventing, like his father.
Background: Born in a small port village in the northern Earth Kingdom to a loving father and mother. His father was an inventor, and his inventions bartered easily to the community. Teo observed his father as he worked, watching as the trial and error process finally became something wonderful. He never asked questions, because the machinist tended to talk about his work as he worked.
Teo's first word was "gear".
Ten years ago, when he was just a toddler, his village, was attacked by the Fire Nation. He and the villagers mostly managed to escape, but a firebender's attack had horribly mangled his legs to the point where he could never again walk. He can't remember it, though, and doesn't know what caused his injury--in fact, it happened when he was stumbling away as quickly as possible, tripped, fell, and was caught by an explosion as the reckless fire-benders tried to incinerate a can of natural gas. This is rather ironic, as later natural gas' explosive power saved his village from distruction.
His entire village rushed to the docks and loaded as many people as possible onto the boats(with mechanical propellers designed by Teo's father) and fled--unfortunately, the boats were overloaded, and during a storm one boat capsized. The one containing Teo's mother...
They vaguely planned to sail around the penninsula and to Ba Sing Se, but due to the fierce storm mentioned earlier, they were lost for several days. When the sky cleared, they figured out that they were sailing south, somewhere east of the Earth Kingdom. Their hastily gathered supplies were running dangerously low, so they decided to sail south. Luckily, they made landfall near a river, travelling from the nearby mountains, and made good use of nature's bounty.
The two earthbenders in the village guided the refugees up the mountain, after someone noticed what might be an ancient air temple and the earthbenders quickly went to see. It was, and they settled there. Teo's father's inventions improved the place, and added hot air pipes to allow gliding. From there, the chair was created for the maimed boy.
Teo's father wasn't by any means conservative about his improvements. Anything that could make the drafty temple comfortable was created. The high altitude was cooler and blustrier than they were used too, and the improvements made the temple feel like home. When the Machinist, in his improvements, found the monk's old glider, he rushed to Teo in a tizzy. He made modification's to the boy's chair, and made a version of the glider wings to fit. He then hurried to his water heater and made a hot air heater, and, within about a week, built jets to blow the warm air into the air around the Air Temple. He tested the skies first with one of the old wooden gliders, and when he found it safe, he took Teo with him. The gray-eyed boy took to the air like a seal to the water.
All of Teo's actual memories, however, exist when he was a child in the Air Temple, wheeling around in his chair, looking at the strange and cryptic murals that didn't seem to make sense. As long as he could remember, he loved gliding. Sometimes it was even hard to get him to come down for supper from gliding too much. He helped teach others to glide too, and enjoyed their company in the air.
Of course, when he found out that his father was using his skill not only to make such things as the boy's wheel-chair/glider, but weapons for the Fire nation, the very people that had attacked them, he was mortified!
Luckily, Aang--the avatar, to Teo's amazement after he had tried to out-glide him--helped him and the village to defeat the Fire Nation and keep them away from their new home without giving them weapons. Teo admired the airbender, as they were much alike. If he could have stayed they probably would have become good friends, but of course there was the problem with the whole saving the world an all... He was rather happy Sokka was around to distract his father, but didn't really care much about the warrior. Katara was an interesting friend too, as the only waterbender in her tribe, and having had to practically take care of the tribe by herself. He kinda wished she could have stayed longer too.
Sample RP:
This was what he lived for. The rush of air past him, warm air lifting him up high and letting him glide downward, slowly or quickly. Diving at the ground, faster and faster, leaving his infirmity behind as he swooped up again. The lurch in his stomach was pure exhilaration. He was free to fly, and young enough to run...but he knew--the cloud of this thought was a shadow against the beautiful sun of soaring on the hot air currents--he couldn't. He was stuck in his chair.
This wasn't such a horrible thing though. He was the best glider in the temple, for example. He was still free to follow in his father's footsteps--though there had been a time, for less than a day, when this seemed like a horrible idea--and create useful machines. And for their own use, now that the Fire Nation was no longer dogging them for the machines. Their own use against the imperialistic country.
Teo's heart swelled with pride at this thought. He was helping fight the Fire Nation back. It was sweet like revenge, but untainted by the knowledge he was being selfish. Oppression wasn't something that you just forgot about. They were hurting the world, maiming people, and taking over towns and cities belligerently. He spun one in the air, and imagined the Earth Kingdom without the Fire Nation. It would be a better place, certainly. There was no doubt.
The boy rolled to a stop on the landing platform of the temple. Though he loved his gliding, there was work to be done, and freedom to be won for everyone. Freedom enough to fly.
