Name: Hana
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Group: Kyoshi Warriors
Nation: Earth Kingdom
Bender?: No
Physical Appearance: While a mish-mash of features seemingly thrown in at random, Hana’s face does retain a sort of exotic beauty. Her forehead is broad, smooth, and clear of mostly any blemishes that may arise being a young teenager who wears thick face makeup nearly all day; thick but shapely eyebrows, well-groomed and pin-straight, roof a pair of large and expressive pale brown eyes. Although her mouth is large, her lips are rather thin, giving them the appearance of being stretched just a bit too far over her face; high cheekbones and a pointed chin chime in with these other features. Her buff-colored skin is lightly dusted with a few freckles, especially along the bridge of her short, broad nose.
Whether or not she’s in her full Kyoshi Warrior uniform or not, Hana keeps her hair swept back, free of bangs and loose locks, and pinned up in a tight and flawless bun below the crown of her head; two plain thin hair sticks of lacquered cherry wood ornament the otherwise simple hairstyle. It’s golden brown and thick and owns a natural sheen, but on particularly hot and humid summer days, it’s been known to frizz up.
Finally, despite the fact she’s maybe an inch below average height, her body is kept in tip-top shape. Her arms and legs are lean and proportionate to her body, with its flat but short waist and stomach, and her hands and feet, while used to hard training sessions, are more or less soft and well taken care of.
Clothing/Armor: Despite her age, Hana cuts a rather imposing figure when dressed in the full Kyoshi Warrior uniform. The first layer of her heavy uniform are tan wrappings along her chest, to keep her breasts in place, and around her groin to serve as underwear. Above that she wears a sleeveless gray asparagus undershirt which is skin-tight to prevent any unwanted loose bits of clothing to distract her during fighting or training. Additionally, a pair of similarly-colored pants, shin-length and just as tight as her undershirt, help to protect her legs. Layered over the under clothes is a plain, loose and thick forest green skirt whose hem reaches her ankles, and layered over that is a long camouflage green over shirt which is opened in the front, sort of like a jacket, but whose hem reaches her calves. The only flare added to this otherwise plain outfit is a myrtle green stripe running up the length of her arm with a saffron-colored circle where her bicep would be.
Bracers that match the color of her under clothes are attached to her forearm, while thick myrtle green gloves, splashed with white along the palms, cover her hands. Padded gray asparagus armor, mimicking an apron but with two pauldrons connecting the front to the back, is wrapped around her body and split up the hip. Knee-length, plain myrtle green boots protect her feet and are simply stepped into and worn, without the aid of laces or buttons. Wrapped around her waist is a myrtle green sash with her fan and jingum comfortably tucked into the side.
A triangle-shaped, dark saffron-colored headpiece is situated just above her hairline; placed in the middle of the metal headpiece is a purer saffron-hued square with four rectangle-like sticks protruding from the sides, two to each side. A pair of thin tassels, one on each side of the headpiece, hangs from the bottom corners of the triangle. A myrtle green headband keeps the headpiece in place by wrapping around the entirety of her head and tying off into a bow at the back.
Finally, to complete the warrior ensemble, Hana’s entire face, including her neck and behind her ears, is painted a creamy white. Dark, dark eyeliner is smeared on the flesh just around and above her eyes, stopping at her eyebrows. Bright crimson lipstick accentuates her thin but lovely lips.
Weapons: Hana owns the standard weapons and shield that the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors use. The first is a plain bronze fighting fan with a rust-colored handle that that is approximately 14 inches across when opened; the second is a jingum, a short sword about 36 inches overall with an inky black handle. Her shield is a nifty contraption which folds-out from her left bracer whenever she needs it. When it’s completely folded out, the circular shield, which measures with an 18 inch circumference, is painted mostly with a dark goldenrod color, except for a circle around the middle, which is filled with a lighter goldenrod, much like her headpiece. A small asparagus green square framed by darker camouflage green rests in the dead center of the shield.
Personality: Hana is a confident, committed and mostly even-tempered individual. She easily believes in herself to the fullest and almost never second-guesses herself (except for that one thing…), and is a hard-working warrior who is proud of her skills on the battlefield. She absolutely hates admitting defeat or giving in on an argument, and so to protect her so-called perfect record, she has been known to cheat or maybe play a little dirty, but if, and only if, she cannot win easily. That isn’t to say Hana endorses ignoring rules and doing things her own way--it’s just that she likes to win. A lot.
Her competitiveness doesn’t seem to get in the way of her knack for reading body language and picking up on things not said outloud. Yes, she’s a fairly intuitive person who kind of prides herself on being able to almost read other people’s minds just from their facial expressions or things left unsaid. She laughs a little too loud and plays a little too rough, but it’s all in good fun, and is quite resilient in times of need. She also has an interest in cooking and enjoys experimenting with different foods when not training or patrolling the village.
Hana takes her training and duty to protect her village as a Kyoshi Warrior very seriously, and also takes the lives of her fellow Warriors seriously, too. As a matter of fact, she will defend and protect the other Warriors to the death and if need be, as she’s jokingly mentioned, beyond (“revenge from the grave!”). Sometimes the stress of being a Kyoshi Warrior gets to her, and she can get a little frazzled and easily excitable, but after a cooling-off period and some alone time, she’s ready to take on challenges head-on and succeed once more.
Still, everyone has their own skeletons in their own closets, and Hana is no different. While she may take great pains in appearing as a normal girl to what she considers her second family (maybe even her true family, if her mom and dad happen to be getting on her nerves a little bit too much that day), Hana hides a discomfort and uncertainty with herself that she has not been able to pin-point just yet, and that one single fact, the very idea of not knowing and understanding herself fully, drives her up and down the other side of the wall. There is one thing Hana does know, though: when around her sisters, she feels a definite comfort in their presence...in fact, she feels a definite comfort in the general female presence. There is no way she would ever reveal this minor glitch in her personality, however, especially to her closest comrade.
Background: Hana was born as the only child in the late spring in the main village of Kyoshi Island to her father Zhain-luo, who was generally considered the village’s handy-man, and her mother, Qian, who herself had come from a long line of talented Kyoshi Warriors. At the time of Qian‘s pregnancy Zhain-luo had hoped for a boy, yet when Hana turned out to be not only a girl but his only child, Zhain-luo was disappointed and perhaps even a bit resentful…but he tried hard, for the most part, in hiding his true feelings in being unable to carry on the family name, although in later years in her life, Hana would be able to sense that her father felt a little strained around her at times. Growing up in the village was normal: she attended basic schooling in the morning, where she learned how to read and write and perform simple arithmetic; in the afternoon and after school, she played with the children and sometimes even helped her father around town if he let her tag along; and at night, she puttered around the kitchen with her mother to help cook dinner and clean. Childhood was easy and simple and care-free enough for her…until she turned six.
No, there was no earth-shattering tragedy that rocked the very foundation of her life, her parent’s didn’t die, the Fire Nation did not burn down her home…she didn’t even catch a particularly bad cold; as a matter of fact, she began her basic training as a warrior like her mother had, and excelled just as well as her mother had. For two years, the training was rigorous and tough and turned her once care-free schedule of early-morning schooling, afternoon playing, and evening cooking and cleaning into early-morning workouts, afternoon sword training, and evening strategy-planning. While it was difficult for Hana to understand just why she had to sacrifice her childhood for something “as stupid as training”, all of her hard work and all of her griping paid off as an instructor from the Kyoshi Warriors stopped by the training shrine one day and noticed eight-year-old Hana wielding a fighting fan with expertise.
Soon enough, she was plucked from the shrine and placed into the beginner’s class of Kyoshi Warriors, and she finally understood why she had been working so hard for so long: the thrill of battle and the accompanying honor of protecting her village and her people soon forced the previous feelings of boredom and anger at being robbed of a normal childhood to take a hike. For four years, she trained with a whole gaggle of girls who were seemingly more tough than the last, but it soon became clear to Hana that the intense training was witling the weaker girls away…and it was. Many of the girls dropped out of the program, citing exhaustion and being unable to take the pressures, until it was just her and a handful of girls who remained. Her naturally charismatic personality had helped her grow close to those girls, who she now considered a sisterhood, but it was to the shy and quiet Aoru that Hana had taken the strongest liking to.
When puberty hit, everything changed.
While the other girls in the village and even her fellow Kyoshi Warriors had begun to swoon and drool over every male creature that sauntered past, Hana noticed she had little to no interest at all in men, which was weird considering every other girl did. It puzzled and even frightened her a little bit that she regarded the opposite sex with utter apathy (and perhaps even a hint of dislike), while on the other hand she began to notice with each passing day the beauty of a woman’s skin and the pillow-y softness of their lips, and devoted countless hours and hours each night laying in bed, wondering what it would feel like to kiss them…
These feelings, along with an acute awareness of the blossoming loveliness of other women, sent Hana into some kind of a tizzy. It was wrong to feel that way about her fellow sisters and warriors for the Avatar’s sake! It was wrong and she felt like a dirty, sick, weird fool. Still, she had grown to love and respect the Kyoshi Warriors and didn’t want to be thrown out because she was different and deformed, and so she stuffed those feelings down, down, down and blended in seamlessly with the babbling idiot girls, all the while keeping a close and watchful eye on herself. Should she slip up one day…it’s probably best to not even think about that.
And then one day, her whole life changed. The Avatar along with two members of the Southern Water Tribe made a pit-stop at their island. Others seemed to mistaken the young Airbender as a threat, but after sorting things out, Hana and the other Kyoshi Warriors, no longer trainees but now full-fledged protectors of the village, soon accepted him as a trusted ally. It wasn’t long before the warm fuzzy feelings of new-found friendship were soon smothered by flames punched from the fists of the infamous Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. The Kyoshi Warriors defended their home as best they could, but it was impossible to save the entire village and some of it burned down. However, the girls were not discouraged. After helping to clean and rebuild, the troupe set off on their own to protect the Earth Kingdom. They traveled north, first stopping at Zhy and eventually escorting a Northern Water Tribe ambassador by the name of Hoji east, to the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se. After he had been successfully dumped off, the Warriors eventually met up with Bora Gan and his Thunderfist Battalion, during which the girls were ambushed, attacked, and defeated by none other than Princess Azula and her Fire Nation military. Only one Warrior, a girl by the name of Tsuya, managed to escape. To where, Hana doesn’t know.
Currently, Hana and the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors are being held captive by that same vile, disgusting military, awaiting her fate and growing more and more worried with each day.
Sample RP: There was no sugar-coating it; there was no clever euphemism for it; there was no other way to put it: Hana was bored out of her mind. Her and the other Kyoshi Warriors had been locked in the cage for only a few days, but for Hana, with only push-ups and stupid little hand games to occupy her time, would swear on her sacred headpiece it had been months. There was nothing worse than being confined in close quarters with a bunch of girls. Sure, she had spent the night at some of the other Kyoshi Warrior’s houses, giggling about boys and who was the cutest like any other normal teenage girl, but this was different.
For starters, no one had been allowed out; not even to shower. The smell was unbearable. Food was served only twice a day, an inedible slop the color of sand with about the same texture. Disgusting. Not to mention the fact that normal girls could get pretty catty, but Hana was proud to notice her girls did not bicker and did not argue. They didn’t even get snippy with one another! They sure were troopers.
Plus there was that little thing nagging in the back of her mind of just how pretty some of the other girls were, especially Aoru...
No! Stop that!
Hana suddenly sat up straight, her back against the bars and her legs spread out in front of her. Her filthy hands had been nervously wrestling each other in her lap without her knowing, but now that she was more aware, she interlocked her fingers and willed the thoughts away. Slowly, slowly they retreated into the deeper recesses of her mind, silent as the grave, but Hana knew they would come back.
They always did.
Casting her gaze around her fellow warriors, her eyes caught sight of the stoic and silent Aoru, sitting much like her with her back to the bars but legs folded beneath her. Her eyes were closed as if in prayer. Without thinking much about it, Hana climbed to her feet and closed the gap between them, taking a seat next to her friend and flashing a smile she was sure Aoru couldn’t see. It felt good to smile; it meant the lecherous Fire Nation military hadn’t broken her.
“Hey,” Hana whispered, gently nudging her friend with her elbow, “what’s up?”
A silly question to ask, yes, but anything to chase the boredom away.
Nothing but silence from Aoru.
Puzzled, Hana leaned forward to search the older girl’s face and found she was not praying, as she had initially thought, but rather sleeping! Hana couldn’t help but giggle. She looked so peaceful, so content! She would have loved to join her friend, but, alas! Hana wasn’t tired at all. She wouldn’t mind waiting...
After all, she had all the time in the world to kill.
