Name: Toph Bei Fong
Age: 12
Nation: Earth Kingdom
Bender?: Yes
Physical Appearance: Considering Toph is only 12, this young blind girl has a fair amount of baby fat on her and has yet to develop any sort of curves. She's about average height for her age, though still pretty short compared to her traveling companions, standing at 4'11". Her skin is pale, and more often than not she's covered in dirt. She has thick black hair, which would fall to roughly her mid to lower back if allowed to hang loose, with bangs that stop at her jawline. It's rare to see her hair down though, as she usually has it swept back into a large bun, with her bangs hanging down so that they conceal her oddly shaded eyes. Speaking of oddly shaded eyes, they just happen to be a very pale shade of green and look slightly glazed. This glazed over look is due to her blindness.
Thanks to her size, age and condition, most would see Toph as being just a delicate little girl. They couldn't be further from the truth. While she does have baby fat on her small frame, she also has a fair amount of muscle. Her feet are pretty well calloused, especially since she uses her feet to 'see' her way around, and must be barefoot to really sense things. Her hands are also pretty calloused, but not nearly as much as her feet.
Clothing/Armor: Back before Toph took off with Aang, Katara and Sokka, this young girl had a pretty extensive wardrobe, mostly filled with danty 'prissy' little outfits that her parents insisted that she wear. Now that she's run off and can pretty much do whatever she pleases, she primarily has just one. She wears a loose fitting emerald green shirt, with sleeves that stop at just above her elbows, and a matching pair of loose fitting pants that stop at about her mid-calf. Over this she wears a pale yellow sleeveless tunic, which is folded over to clasp on her right side via a single toggle. It splits at about her waistline on either side, and finally ends at her knees. A wide olive drab shaded leather belt cinches the tunic in at the waist, and is studded with small metal rivets. She wears leather bracers in the same shade as the belt, wrapped around her wrists to provide a minimal amount of protection. She also wears olive drab colored leather guards around her ankles, which are lined with emerald green cloth to prevent any sort of chafing. Since Toph is definitely not a 'sissy' girl, she doesn't really wear anything that would be considered a fashion accessory. The only thing she wears that might be classified as such would be the headband she uses to keep her hair back. It is blocked in green and gold, and has pale yellow puff balls on either side that are attached just above her ears.
Weapons: Who needs weapons when you can earthbend!? Consider Toph's bending to be her weapon if you will.
Since Toph has had to rely on earthbending all her life, it's no surprise that she's a powerful bender. She's on par with most earthbending masters, and simply lacks the added benefit of life experience to round her out. Because she developed her style of bending based upon her observances of badgermoles, it is noteably different from what other earthbenders use. It focuses mostly on using her arms, keeping her leg work to a minimum since that involves breaking contact with the earth and thus limiting her ability to sense what is going on around her.
Toph has also learned to use her bending for purposes outside of conflict. The most obvious is her ability to 'see' by feeling the vibrations of the earth. A secondary ability is that she is able to tell if someone is lying, by feeling their heart beat if they are pressed against stone (for example, pinned to the ground or pinned to a stone wall).
Personality: Toph Bei Fong isn't exactly the gentle sort and she's very far from being considered a mature individual. She's about as blunt as a boulder most times, and is not above being brutally honest with those she's close to...well, with the exception of her parents anyway. She's very stubborn, headstrong, with a wild streak about a mile wide. She's very self assured, to the point of being arrogant and BAD!y. She has quite the competive spirit about her, and can be a downright brat if beaten at something, whether it's bending or anything else.
Toph considers herself to be pretty independent and does not appreciate it when others give her hand out (translation: she doesn't want help from anybody). To her, it means the other person is simply pitying her for her condition. While Toph gets very annoyed at being treated like an invalid, she's not above using her blindness to her advantage. Often she can get the upper hand on others because they underestimate what they assume to be a poor, helpless blind girl.
There is indeed a bit of a vulnerable side to this otherwise really gruff adolescent, mostly where her parents are concerned. Like any other child, Toph seeks approval from her mother and father, though she'd be loathe to admit that fact to anyone. It was this factor that kept her from coming out and truly showing what she could do with her earthbending, and why she allowed herself to be 'imprisoned' within the confines of the Bei Fong estate. Now that she is away from them, she keeps her feelings regarding her parents very tightly guarded and tends to feel just overall awkward when others around her talk about family.
Background: The wealthy Bei Fong family had been trying for many years to have a child, but after miscarriage after miscarriage, it seemed like it was not going to happen. And then it happened: Lao Bei Fong's wife was able to carry a baby to full term. They were blessed with the birth of their first (and what would end up being their only) child, a little girl they named Toph. There had been no complications during labor, and in an ideal world the infant should've been just fine. Within a couple months though, the Bei Fong's began to worry. When most infants Toph's age should've been turning their heads to look at their parents as they spoke, Toph did not. Initially they wrote it off as their little girl simply being a late bloomer, but after a few months there was no denying it. Toph was blind. The Bei Fong's were heartbroken that their baby girl would never be normal, and would be handicapped the rest of their lives. They had no idea that Toph could indeed see...just not in the way other people could.
Toph was sensing the world around her through earthbending as early as a year old. Of course, she was much too young to understand this, let alone do much about it. As she graduated from crawling to walking, her sense was just clear enough to allow her to vaguely feel her way around. Her body was basically making up for the lack of one sense (her sight) and enhancing another to compensate for it. Her parents never knew what was going on, too concerned with keeping their daughter safe and secure within their home. At about the age of three, Toph's ability to earthbend finally was revealed. Like most toddlers, the blind girl was testing her limits. She was trying to go outside to play in the yard, and her mother refused, siting that Toph could trip over something or fall into the turtle duck pond they had on the grounds. Toph threw a full blown temper tantrum that resulted in minor structural damage to the Bei Fong's parlor. This new development disturbed her mother and father greatly, fearing that without eye sight, their daughter could really hurt herself with earthbending. Rather than seek out a tutor for the girl, they simply forbade her from doing it period. A three year old had no way of understanding the reasons behind her parents decision, and as she grew older...well, she still didn't understand it all that much.
Toph's blindness kept her from learning to read and write, but her mother was able to orally instruct her in some areas. Toph later referred to these things as 'the girly arts': poetry, proper etiquette, and voice lessons. She positively hated her sessions with her mother, and often would feign fatigue to get out of them. What she really wanted to do was earthbend. She was four, soon to be five, and she was beginning to understand just how it was she was able to sense things around her. She could feel the vibrations of the earth, providing her with a mental image of where objects and people were around her. At one point she'd tried to explain this to her parents, but they wrote it off as their poor baby girl making use of her overactive imagination. Toph was stunned and hurt that they hadn't even believed what she had said, but she didn't argue with them. Instead she ran away later that night, heading off into the countryside outside of Gaoling. She was never going back there, not ever! Eventually she came to a cave and decided to stop there to rest.
A chance encounter with a badgermole changed her life forever. The creature had earthbended into the chamber she was resting in, scaring her half to death. As the creature inspected the blind girl, it became apparrent that it meant her no harm. She followed the badgermole as it earthbended its way further into the cave complex. It dawned on her that this creature, a natural born earthbender, was blind just as she was. It didn't hinder the badgermole from going about its daily life. It used earthbending to interact with the world around it, and she could do the same. Over the next few days, she mimicked the badgermole, in essence learning earthbending from the original source. Toph proved to be a quick study, and her confidence grew in leaps and bounds. She wasn't just some poor defenseless blind girl. She wasn't helpless in the least! Those days in the cave were some of the happiest that she could remember in a long time...with one exception. While she resented her parents for their insistence on sheltering her from everything, she still missed them and still loved them. She returned to Gaoling, covered in dirt from all those days of earthbending, and made up a story that she had accidentally earthbended herself into a sink hole, and 'innocently' mentioned that maybe if she was taught how to bend, she would be able to avoid doing something that dangerous by accident in the future. Maybe her parents were too overcome with relief to question it (or maybe they really were just that stupid), but they bought the story hook, line and sinker. The following day, Toph was enrolled in Master Yu's Earthbending Academy.
Initially, Toph was very pleased that she was finally being allowed to do some real earthbending. Unfortunately, there was no real teaching to be had under Master Yu. He was under strict instructions by the Bei Fongs to only teach the blind girl the very basics and breathing techniques. Frustrated and defeated, Toph went along with it. Even if she did complain to her parents that she was capable of so much more, it wasn't like they would listen anyway. So, she contented herself with sneaking out a few nights a week to practice what she had learned from the badgermoles, in essence teaching herself how to earthbend. For the next five years, she carried on this double life. During the day, she played the part of the fragile blind girl, while most of her nights were spent practicing her own style of bending. She eventually began to grow bored, and desperately wanted something to really truly test her skills.
About 18 months later, that chance finally came, in the form of Earth Rumble. Xin Fu had brought this popular attraction to Gaoling, and put out a call for any benders who thought themselves 'worthy' to come and test their might. Toph heard about it through a group of Master Yu's students, who were talking about how they were going to go and watch the fighting. The girl's interest was peaked, so she snuck off to the arena, with the full intention of competing. It took a lot of convincing, but after parting with some of her allowance money, she was allowed to enter as the Blind Bandit. No one expected her to win, considering she was just a kid and a blind one to boot. So it was quite a shock when the Blind Bandit easily dispatched all of her opponents without so much as breaking a sweat. She won the title that night, and would retain the title for several months, as it seemed there weren't any other earthbenders out there that could top her. She was feeling on top of the world...and then her parents announced they were taking a vacation. Toph was extremely bitter as she had to basically give her title away so that she could be paraded around Omashu, like some fragile porcelain doll.
Her parents had no idea at the time that Omashu had been taken over and renamed New Ozai, until it was too late. Toph was seperated from her parents. Maybe it was because she was pretty pissed about having to abandon her title as reigning champ of Earth Rumble. Maybe she was angry that the Fire Nation was trying to take her parents away. Whatever the reason, Toph surprised the soldiers attempting to take her in by cutting loose with her earthbending. This managed to catch the attention of Aang, Sokka and Katara, who had been heading to Omashu to convince King Bumi to teach the young avatar earthbending. Together, the group managed to make their way into New Ozai and find where King Bumi was being held. Instead of agreeing to teach Aang, the senile old man suggested that perhaps Toph could instruct the young Avatar. Toph didn't immediately agree to, but didn't hesitate to demand that Aang and his companions take her to Gaoling.
Toph was going to content herself with leaving a note for her parents, and then simply tag along with the avatar for as long as it was convenient. She hadn't yet decided whether she would show Aang anything, and there wasn't a lot of time to think it over before Prince Zuko, who had been tracking Aang, arrived. Fighting broke out, and Toph was more than happy to teach those Fire Nation chumps a lesson in pain. The young girl had no idea that her parents had managed to somehow escape New Ozai, and had returned to Gaoling, convinced that their daughter had been taken away forever. It was a real shocker to them to see their 'helpless' little girl exhibiting skills that even few earthbending masters couldn't claim. Toph didn't get much of a chance to explain, before Katara came down with Appa and literally hauled her off.
After that, Toph finally agreed to teach Aang. In the beginning, the task seemed monumental and pretty much impossible. Aang simply wasn't getting it and Toph was growing more and more frustrated trying to pound the concept into his brain (more often than not, this was quite literally what she was doing). Thankfully for both their sanity, the young avatar managed to get the hang of earthbending...and just in time too, as about a week later the group came face to face with Princess Azula and her companions, Mai and Ty Lee...
Sample RP: Toph Bei Fong was not a happy camper, and being in the air riding on Appa (and thus seperated from her only means of being able to 'see') didn't help improve her mood. For the first time ever, she had been forced to retreat. She had been beaten, and that fact rankled her greatly. She had been champion at Earth Rumble for crying out loud, and had successfully defended her title for months! Rather than blame herself, or give credit to her opponent for simply being better, Toph chose to cast blame on someone else.
Toph pointed a grimy finger at Katara. "I could've taken her! You and your stupid 'sissy bending' distracted me!" she shouted angrily.
...of course...she might've seemed more intimidating if she had actually been pointing at the souther water tribe girl in question. How was Toph supposed to know she was really pointing at Momo? She didn't realize the error until the flying lemur chittered in confusion.
"Sissy bending!?" Katara replied shrilly.
"Yeah, you heard me sugar queen! It's all your fault!"
"My bending was just fine, thank you very much!"
Toph simply glared, replying, "Whatever. Just don't talk to me..."
The waterbender may have argued or said more, but Toph wasn't listening anymore. Deep down she knew that she'd simply been outclassed, but she wasn't about to admit it. That firebender was by far the toughest opponent she had ever come against. Though she was sightless and unable to discern the flames as being blue in color, she could tell just from the intensity of the heat from the others bending that she was powerful. For a moment, Toph could almost feel that heat seeping into her, smell the scorched earth around her. And somehow, she knew that it wouldn't be the last time that their little group would encounter the fire nation princess and her entourage.
Next time, things are gonna end differently...I guarantee it.
