Name: Iroh
Age: 64 years young
Gender: Male
Group: Fire Nation Citizens
Nation: Fire Nation
Bender?: Yes
Physical Appearance: Iroh is a stout man of slightly less than average height. Iroh's body is built very stocky. He is not a tall man but he is a prominent figure. He appears fat but is as solid as a master Earthbender. He has fine, straight gray hair that drapes down to his shoulders. The top of his head is bald. He sports a healthy beard that lays about the same length in the front as his hair does in the back. Iroh has gold eyes that appear amber in the pale light of the evening. These peering eyes are set deep into his slanted eyes, perched beneath his thick Gray eyebrows. The many lines of his forehead appear deep, from many years of grief and/or many years of laughter. Iroh is not overly attractive but is handsome, even for an older gentleman.
Clothing/Armor: Iroh used to sport traditional Fire Nation armor and garb, however since his banishment, Iroh has donned more 'homely' looking clothes. His clothes are usually earth tones (browns, greens, etc...), and fitted loosely or baggy even. Iroh wears no jewelry or clothing accessories with blatant Fire Nation origin. Iroh looks like a portly Earth Kingdom commoner.
Weapons: Firebending is Iroh's main weapon, however, when in a jam, he can be very resourceful. His brute strength enables him to fling a table or person or whatever he can get his hands on. His intellect and charisma are depended on more often than his strength, and his firebending is for a last resort. Iroh has wielded many different weapons from all over the world, however he never mastered his proficiencies in any weapon (save firebending).
As far as firebending goes Iroh is a complete master. He has the deepest understanding of the art of bending fire. Drawing their power from the sun, Firebenders utilize their unrelenting will and resolve to control and in some instances create fire. Many modern firebenders fuel their bending with anger and fury, this can sometimes cause the flame to turn blue, which is hotter and faster than a red flame. Iroh, however learned of firebendings origin from the Sun Warrior tribe.
These primitive people were the first firebenders, given their knowledge by the two original firebenders, a couple of dragons named Shao and Ran. They see fire as the essence of life. To them fire is the earthly embodiment of human vigor.
Iroh can breath fire, create fire walls, shoot fire balls, and make any sort of weapon with his flame (whip, blade, etc...). He can also create lightning and even has a few techniques that unleash a barrage of fire and lightning strikes at his opponent. He has the ability to control the temperature to some degree (pardon the pun) and this allows him to create steam fog in a very humid place or a place near a lot of water. His different bending techniques are mostly offensive (typical of all firebending), however he possesses many defensive techniques. Iroh can disrupt most fire attacks without harm, and has been able to fend off earth and water attacks with his flames. Iroh is one of the very few people who can redirect lightning, a technique he invented.
Personality: Iroh is a lighthearted and spirited individual. He enjoys the little things in life, like making the perfect cup of jasmine tea or spending an afternoon playing pai-sho. Iroh's easy-going attitude can sometimes frustrate the ambitious and single-minded Prince Zuko.
In many ways, Iroh is a walking con tradition. He is from the Fire Nation, and has fought and won many battles for the Fire Nation, however he does not want to see his home Nation succeed in the current war. He is a master firebender but does not wield it with aggression or anger. He can be very languid, but at times can be an unstoppable force. Iroh can appear childish and playful and yet be very wise and serious.
Iroh has a deep spiritual connection. In his years, he has seen many mysterious and inexplicable events. He has witnessed the supernatural and has a deep respect for the many spiritual beings of the world (even the Avatar), and anyone who disrespects the spirits are subject to Iroh's rare but furious rage. He understands the need of balance when referring to the four nations and the four elements. The loss of Iroh's only son, Lu Ten, hardened his spiritual beliefs and opened his eyes to the scourge of war and the trail of tears it leaves behind.
Iroh enjoys the role of mentor, whether it be as a father, uncle or fire-bending teacher. He finds fulfillment in mentoring his young nephew. Iroh sees the great destiny Zuko has ahead of him. Iroh knows Zuko, alone, has the power to end his family squabbling and restore the Fire Nation's honor. It is now Iroh's job to get Zuko to understand this fact.
Iroh has many diverse interests and hobbies. Music is a great passion for Iroh. He is often heard singing as he travels or reciting prose in a lyrical fashion. Iroh is skilled in many instruments, especially stringed instruments. Iroh also enjoys the sport of pai-sho. He has said that his winning strategy hinges on the crucial white lotus pai-sho piece. Tea-making is another passion of Iroh's. He finds tea to be the most rewarding of all his hobbies.
Iroh is a very respectful person. Even in the face of blatant disrespect, Iroh's manners do not fault. However, when disrespect turns to treachery or betrayal, Iroh bears his fangs. He is highly capable of doing damage, but he reserves such power for those who truly wrong him.
Iroh's mood is generally pleasant. He is usually upbeat and optimistic, always seeing the brighter side of his banishment. This is in direct contrast to the outlook of the young Prince Zuko. He walks with a light bounce in his step, as if he were performing a slow dance to the rhythm of life.
Background: Iroh is the eldest son of the former Firelord Azulan and grandson of Firelord Sozin. His birthright was being the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, born into a time of war where his nation was 'unifying' the four nations. Iroh was schooled at a young age in the arts of military strategy. His firebending progressed hastily and it was rumored that he was a prodigy, destined for greatness. And so it seemed for many years.
Palace life for a prodigy can be filled with many boring moments. Iroh as a kid was a constant trouble-maker, a free spirit with curious and mischievous tendencies. His mother worried that Iroh was too rebellious. This came coupled with the stress involved with raising Iroh's infant brother: Ozai. Iroh loved having a little brother but this, like many things, would change over the next few years.
On his fifteenth birthday, Iroh snuck out of the Royal Palace dressed as a commoner. He went to a popular musical performance in the capital. This event would have lifetime repercussion, and would in many ways define Iroh as an adult. At the concert Iroh admired one of the many dancers. She was a fare-skinned, dark eyed beauty with a red and white flower tucked behind her ear. She locked eyes with Iroh, who was in the crowd, and she stuttered her dance move just a bit, which caused Iroh to snicker. She looked at him with contempt and ran off the stage.
Iroh felt so bad and was therefore compelled to seek out the fare lady and apologize. After sneaking around the back, he spotted the girl in the shadow behind the stage. She was fanning herself with her decorative dancing fan and she had a scowl on her face. Obviously, she was still upset from her misstep. Iroh approached the girl and apologized, she responded with a weak slap to his face, which again cause Iroh to snicker. She smiled back.
"So, ... you like flowers..." Iroh asked playfully as he fingered her hair back behind he ear.
"Yes," she responded, "my favorite is the Lily."
Iroh met the woman of his dreams at that concert. They would be married five years later. Together they shared many things. She shared her love of flowers and herbology and her love of music and dancing. Iroh shared his heart and his lighter side. She became his beloved 'Lilly'. He called her this affectionately as it always reminded them of how they met.
As a young man, Iroh began to squabble with his younger brother, Ozai. Ozai was a focused and very competitive sibling, who constantly challenged Iroh. Ozai deeply respected his older brother, and strived to be such a great firebender. Ozai idolized Iroh until he grew a little older and realized that his older brother did not live up to the image Ozai had built-up in his mind. From that moment on, Ozai dreamed of nothing but surpassing Iroh. This lead to many sibling squabbles, threats of Agni Kai (which Iroh would never have accepted), and eventually ended with Iroh choosing to ship off to the War.
During his twenties and thirties, Iroh traveled all around the world as a member of the Fire Nation Military. He fought in many decisive battles and in a few instances he was the deciding factor. His firebending constantly evolved as he matured. He even incorporated motions from other bending techniques, which was thought of as bizarre or even impossible. Iroh was a student through and through and enjoyed each new life experience.
The best life experience he ever had was coupled with his second worst. Iroh had never experienced joy until the moment he became a father. He waited in a large room of the royal palace as his wife, 'Lilly' labored for hours. Finally, they brought out his son, a future Fire Lord, Lu Ten.
After about an hour of pure bliss, Iroh was suddenly crushed by the news. His wife had not faired well during the birth and afterwords she began to lose blood. Iroh went into their royal bedroom for the last time and said his last goodbye to the love of his life.
Iroh struggled with the duties of being a father for a few months, until the Fire Lord beckoned his return the the war. Iroh's counsel as a great strategist was not enough. He was a prominent warrior and was needed at the front lines. Iroh wrote often to his young son and visited home every chance he got.
Iroh became successful in the military, eventually reaching the position of General. His prominence earned him the title of 'Dragon of the West', due in part because Iroh reportedly killed the last dragon. It was also due to the fact that Iroh can breath fire, one of many bending techniques he learned along his travels. Iroh once sieged Ba Sing Se and even breached the Outer Wall, something that had never been done. Iroh would not see the wall crumble though, and eventually retired from the siege a failure, when he heard the tragic news that his son Lu Ten had died, fighting on the front lines.
Iroh returned to the Fire Nation to bury his son, but when he arrived he learned that his father, the Fire Lord Azulan had also died, and his last request was to have Ozai appointed Fire Lord, essentially revoking Iroh's birthright. Iroh, however did not fight Ozai for the throne and instead retreated to his grief. The failed Siege of Ba Sing Se was labeled Iroh's dishonorable failure. Iroh soon retired from his post as General and the war continued without his counsel.
After Prince Zuko was burned and disgraced by his father, Fire Lord Ozai, Iroh accompanied Zuko in his quest to capture the Avatar and reclaim his honor. Iroh constantly endeavors to advise young Zuko along the way, attempting to reveal to Zuko that he can live his life his way, not to live in the shadow of his father or sister. In a few instances Iroh assisted the new Avatar, Aang and friends. This eventually earned him the title of 'Traitor'.
Iroh and Zuko continue to roam the Earth Kingdom/Fire Nation Colonies at odds with their native Fire Nation.
Sample RP:
In a valley of the Omashu mountain chain, Iroh walks along the dirt path headed north, deeper into the Earth Kingdom. He was jovially treading along singing a tune that he just thought of.
"HEY HEY HEY ... DO YOU KNOW THE WAY?
I SAY SAY SAY ... DO YOU KNOW THE WAY?
HEY HEY HEY ... CAN YOU HEAR WHAT I SAY?
OOOHHH DO YOU KNOW THE WAY ... TO BA SING SE?!"
Iroh bounced from side to side with each step, grooving to his new anthem. From his best estimates, it was going to be a couple days before he caught up with his nephew Zuko. It was never hard for Iroh to trail the Prince. It did help knowing all the right things to look for.
A couple on a wagon approached from the north heading in the opposite direction as Iroh. As they came closer they heard Iroh's singing, and must have found it to their liking as they were grinning from ear to ear.
"HEY HEY HEY ... Do you know the way, to Ba Sing Se?" He sang in tune with a soft tenor.
The couple laughed as they passed and he tipped his small green cap to them, exposing his bald top. He dropped it back on top and continued along the path. The woman shouted 'HERE!' as she tossed an old luiqin to Iroh. He spun around and caught it in mid-song. He had already been thinking up the notes to go along with the words of his new ballad. He began stringing along, still bouncing with joy.
"Its a beautiful day, to go to Ba Sing Se!"
