Name: Chihiro
Age: Seven
Gender: Female
Group: None
Nation: Northern Water Tribe
Bender?: Yes
Physical Appearance: The most striking feature about Chihiro is her eyes. Large bright shining orbs of sapphire blue that mimic the sea both in elegance and quiet intensity, yet with a certain strength resonating just below the surface. Standing at a meager 3'8'' and weighing about 52 pounds, Chihiro's overall stature is quite unimpressive. Her cheeks are round and plump with baby fat, carrying a naturally rosey color to them. With a button nose tiny hands and feet, she still has enough "cute" appeal to charm people. Chihiro's hair is an unusually dark shade of auburn, almost looking black. Its somewhat long and held together by a simple hair tie and two braids, something Chihiro would be able to do herself without her mother's help. One small bun tied up in the back, letting the rest of her hair flow down to her lower back. Overall she's a little on the plump side, but not terribly so, thanks to her mother constantly feeding her out of fear she wouldn't get proper nourishment any other way
Clothing/Armor: Tied around her neck is what was supposed to be a necklace carved from soapstone, but instead is a rather badly drawn crude attempt at such, making the "symbol" hardly distinguishable from a random doodle of sorts. Her outfit consists of an over sized parka with the water tribe emblem displayed on the front, a pair of mittens, boots on her feet, and so many layers of clothing that one would question how Chihiro hadn't suffocated to death under all that insulation- thanks to her mother smothering her with clothes out of fear she'll "catch her death." The hood of the parka, as well as the outer sleeves and the brim of the coat, is lined with white fur and is a rich cerulean blue. In front are a row of buttons. Underneath that is a second jacket, much lighter in both size and the shade of powdered snow blue, yet still resilient against the elements.
Under that is yet another layer. A long sleeved shirt colored navy blue with a picture of an otter-turtle on the front, Chihiro's favorite animal. Finally, the forth and last layer, is a simple short-sleeved violet with the insignia of the ocean on the front, and the moon on the back. Chihiro is always seen wearing a simple pair of pants which match her parka. She does not even own a skirt because her mother doesn't find them o be very practical at all. All of her clothes have her name written in them somewhere, thanks to her mother fearing they might get lost. At her sides are two canteens filled to the brim with warm water, that her mom gave her to practice with. Mostly her clothes are a tad too big for her, as her mother feels that she'd just grow in to them eventually.
Weapons: None.
Personality: Chihiro is impatience personified. She wants what she wants, when she wants it. Like most children her age, her form of negotiation comes in tantrums. Large, loud, explosive, temper tantrums. She just doesn't understand the meaning of the word "No." Despite her age, Chihiro is a very smart and resourceful little girl. She'll always find a way to get what she wants and what she needs, either by charming it out of "grown-ups" with cute looks and puppy dog eyes, or bullying it out of other kids.
Either way, she won't stop until she's fully satisfied. Upon the list of things Chihiro hates, being alone is one of them. Always in need of a companion to indulge her in "adventures" or someone to talk to, this little girl is a true social butterfly. She can empathize with others and be quite full of the compassion only small children seem to have- before they learn the nature of the world and life changes them. Above all, she wants to help. Whatever it may be, Chihiro is the first hand to go up, and the first one to scream- "I'll do it!"
She wants to feel needed by someone. To feel important and "grown up" by having "grown up" responsibilities and to be treated as such, instead of babied. Strangely enough, Chihiro has been known to attatch herself to quite the assortment of colorful characters. The meaner someone is to her, the more she clings to them and seeks their friendship.
If someone interests her, fascinates her, or perplexes and peaks her curiosity in any way- she sticks to them like glue. A girl who loves a good thrill and finds it in whatever ways she can. One of her hobbies include having large-scale, full-front, take-no-prisoners "Snowball Wars" with her friends. Chihiro really doesn't know what she wants out of life, after all she's still just a little girl.
Her greatest nemesis is also the first name she'd scream out if she was ever in danger: her mother. Push and pull describes their relationship. Everything between them is a battle. When Chihiro goes to bed- her mother says eight, she says nine-, what Chihiro wears and how much of it, how her hair is styled that day, what they have for dinner, everything. The two fight almost constantly. All in all, her mother genuinely loves Chihiro and only does what she does out of that love- though smothering it can be at times. Unfortunately shes much too young to understand why her mom behaves that way. Her brother, being ten by the time she was born- now seventeen, rarely spends time with her. If anything, she considers her friend Lei more of a sibling than her real brother.
Background: Chihiro was born with only her mother and older brother by her side. A few months prior to her birth, her father caught a terrible cold and passed away. His own personal motto of- "No illness can take down a water tribe warrior!" was his excuse for not bundling up properly and ignoring the pleas of his wife. Even though she was a waterbender like her husband, when he died she stopped bending altogether. By the time she first opened her eyes and gazed upon the world around her, baby Chihiro stared into the face of a woman around twenty-five whom she would eventually call "mother." Her brother was already nine by the time she was born. Chihiro hardly ever saw him. He'd rather hang out with his friends and the other water tribe warriors than stay home with his mom and baby sister. She had no relationship with him, because he was never around long enough to form one. Darting out the door just as Chihiro was eating breakfast and coming home long after her bedtime, she caught occasional glimpses of the boy. For as long as she could recall, her mom had been slightly overprotective.
Dressed in numerous layers of clothing, rushed to the healing hut every time she sneezed or coughed, and never allowed to step foot in water past her knees. At age four she threw a massive tantrum when her mother tried to force her to take a bath, even though she proclaimed over and over that she wasn't dirty.
Chihiro was mostly bored and a little lonely throughout the first part of her life. Her mother always seemed to keep herself busy with household chores and other activitites to have much time to play with her daughter. She was never neglected, nor was there any question to whether or not this she was loved, however her mother handled things on a "need" basis. Her daughter "needed" to be fed, washed, clothed, and educated. As far as she was concerned, entertainment was not a need. "Why don't you go see if your brother will play with you?" she'd respond to Chihiro's insessant cries of being bored. The rebuttle of him not being home was always the same.
Around bathtime one day the final straw had been plucked. With a bathtub full of piping hot water adjacent to her and her mom ready to chuck her in, Chihiro was fed up. Completely. In a massive arm flailing movement, perhaps by accident, the water in the tub lurched outward and flung itself on the pair of them- drenching them from head to toe. Her daughter was a waterbender. The next day the pair walked hand-in-hand to the healing hut, to begin Chihiro's first lesson. Though she liked the idea of healing people, Chihiro thought these classes were absolutely pointless. She was four years old. When would a four year old ever be needed to play doctor to someone? Her mother stayed at home and cooked for a living. She was also a very cautious woman, so the odds of her mother getting hurt badly enough to require healing were slim to none. In her mind, her brother was invincible. There was no way, she thought, that he would ever need healing. She just didn't see the point in her learning, but regardless she tried her best anyways to please her mother. On her way back she noticed a group of children, mostly boys, chucking snowballs at each other with mock-intent to kill. She also learned that he, like her, was a waterbender.
Enthralled by this display, she begged danced and wriggled in her mother's firm grasp until finally she gave in and turned her daughter loose. After the "battle", Chihiro spoke to one of the boys on her side. She learned his name was Lei and that everyday after warrior training, him and his friends would rush out into the snow to pummel the life out of each other with snowballs, and imitate that day's lesson in these skirmishes.
So when her daughter finally found some friends to play with- her mother was overjoyed. She wished time and time again that they could play something a little more quiet and less wet, but Lei and his friends kept Chihiro from bothering her. Realizing that, her mom didn't fight it. At first Chihiro assumed the way her mom acted was the way all adults did. Though after hearing from Lei and his gang that their moms were nowhere near as "mean", she began to do two things. Rebel and question why. Why did she have to wear all these clothes? Why did a little girl like her need to learn healing in the first place? Why did she have to take a bath when she was just going to get dirty again anyways? How could cold water possibly be bad? If it was that bad, why did people take baths then? And why won't her mom just get married again so she could have a dad like everyone else? All of those, with the exception of the last, sparked uncountable arguements between the pair- of which her mother won. Whenever re-marriage was brought up, her mom would either pretend she hadn't heard or dismiss her in some form. If her mother told her to do something and the reason wasn't good enough in her opinion- Chihiro did it anyways. She'd stay out past sunset[which was her cerfew] playing, until her mother had to forceably come and take her home crying kicking and screaming the whole way. As she slowly began to get older, Chihiro learned that she was fighting a war she could not win with her mom.
The skill, prowess, and wit of a little girl was no match for a grown woman she was quick to find out. Slowly but surely she accepted her mothers rules. Though she didn't like them. Overall there was a lot of tension between the family. Chihiro's mother did not approve of her son being a water tribe warrior in the least bit. What if he got sent away to fight and something happened to him? And her daughter seemed to fight her every step of the way. Didn't she realize she was only acting this way for her own good? Her own children kept trying to push her away.
Chihiro's brother wanted nothing more than to be a warrior. All the other guys his age were training to do just that. Why should he be the only one to stay home with mommy and play with his baby sister than do what everyone else was doing? He'd be laughed at. A joke. Something his pride would never allow. As for Chihiro herself, she only wanted people to talk to and play with. Her brother was never around. Her mom never seemed to care about what she wanted, only what she "needed".
This strange tension between the three of them lead to silence at the dinner table and was the main reason Chihiro hated staying at home. Lei and his gang were mostly her only friends. Her mom tried to coax her in to making some friends with the other girls at the healing hut, but it was to no avail. Their conversations bored the snot out of her.
Over the next three years this pattern continued- everyday after healing lessons she'd meet up with Lei and his friends to play the game they christened "Snowball Wars." A game in which one group represent the Water Tribe, and another- after much whining and complaining- the Fire Nation [Nobody wanted to be the Fire Nation]. Then the two imitate a full scale war by chucking snowballs at eachother as hard as they can, until the Fire Nation team is fully pumeled and soundly beaten by the Water Tribe team. Nothing of interest really happened for her. Lei and his gang became her friends once they accepted the idea of having a girl in their entourage.
With what Chihrio and Lei called "snowbending" the two had a clear advantage over their non-bender friends. One day after the game had concluded and all their friends went home, Lei welcomed Chihiro by blasting her with a torrent of water in the face. Rather than get angry, she bugged and pestered him to tell her how he did that. He simply shrugged and remarked that his dad gave him some bending lessons. That night Chihiro made a beeline for their house. She burst through the front door on her mom cooking dinner and explained that she wanted bending lessons too.
Her mother merely frowned and screamed- "What did I tell you?! I don't want you out there splashing around and flinging that ice-water everywhere! You'll get sick! That's what happened to your dad! Always running out into the ocean, throwing waves every which way, then coming home soaking wet! Honestly, its bad enough he was one and now you too! Oh lord help me...If you want to practice, use the bathtub and I'll get you some WARM water! You can start by drying these."
She then walked over to a basket full of wet clothes and pointed at them. Chihiro moved her arms in a bored motion, a stream of liquid rushed from them and hovered in midair, before being swiftly redirected to the sink and falling there.
That was the only use her mother allowed. Three years had passed, and now both Chihiro and Lei were seven years old. His waterbending lessons were moving along smoothly, he'd even learned how to create ice. Chihiro on the other hand was stuck in the healing hut, drying clothes, and trying to manipulate water inside a bathtub. By this time the two of them were best friends. Often Lei would take her out by the water and show her all the things he'd learned how to do, showing off and trying to impress her at the same time.
Every time she'd clap and applaud, truly amazed by all the things a waterbender could do. But at the same time, she was jealous. Deeply so. With every display of bending prowess, well that of a seven year old anyways, her mood would worsen. Sensing this he began to feel bad for her.
He'd remembered seeing his own brother, around seventeen years old, give a necklace to a girl he was "friends" with. And also how happy it made her. Quickly he picked scooped up some water and froze it with his hand. Then taking a pointed stick he proceeded to draw what was supposed to be the water tribe emblem on it, but instead came out as a horribly misshapen ice-shard with some doodle on the front, and a piece of string for the strap. Lei hunted Chihiro down and handed it to her with a wide grin on his face. She was absolutely delighted and both thought it was a "stay my friend!" rather than a "marry me!" thing. Innocence at its best. Seeing this necklace her mother nearly fainted on the floor.
She threw her coat on so fast and flounced out the door, threatening to "hunt down whatever sick pedophile dared to do such a thing!" Only when she explained did her mother calm down. She decided it was time to explain what role that necklace played in their society, that way her daughter would know to never accept another one until she was much much older. She only half-listened to the lecture. All she knew was the necklace was pretty and she liked it. About a week later, the Shai City was in uproar. Early one afternoon the Avatar had landed within their walls upon a flying bison. Many times Chihiro begged her mother to let her go see him, but she refused. Insisting that the Avatar would rather not have some random little girl running up to him gawking and pointing, then insisting he play with her. But regardless, she was excited, especially hearing he was kid not much older than herself. Somehow knowing that the strongest bender in the world was only a couple years her senior gave her the hope that one day she too would be a powerful bender.
About two days later as she was heading home from healing classes with her mother at her side, an old friend of her mom's caught sight of them. A woman who she hadn't seen in almost ten years. Her mother told Chihiro that she was heading out to catch up this woman and to head on home- her brother was there, and he would let her in. She did just that, but not even five minutes passed before the two got into a fight. She locked herself in her room and threw herself face first into the bedsheets. She fell asleep. Suddenly she was awoken by a frantic voice and someone beating on her room door. Even without opening her eyes all the way, she could tell something wasn't right. Chihiro quickly jumped up and opened her door to see that it was her brother. He told her he was going with the other warriors and to to lock the doors, stay hidden, and not answer the door for anyone.
Confused and still half asleep, she asked what was wrong but got no answer as he dashed out of the house. But it wasn't long before curiosity got the better of her. Chihiro waited about ten minutes- so her brother would be far enough away. Slowly she put on her boots and parka, then stepped outside for just a moment. Instantly her eyes darted out towards the horizon where a fleet of ships could be seen steadily approaching. Gently, flakes of black began to float down as the full moon hovered overhead at dusk. Everywhere she looked there were people running, screaming, complete chaos. Frantically she looked around for a familiar face while masses of people rushed past her. Finally, an older tribesmen caught sight of Chihiro.
Seeing a little girl out there as a battle was quite literally on the horizon, he grabbed her hand [against her will] and hurriedly rushed her away to safety with all the other women and children. She was huddled inside a hidden chamber of ice, cramped with tons of other people. The man told her she would be safe there and not to leave until the conflict had ended. Suddenly a familiar face caught her eye. All the way on the otherside of the chamber, was her mother. The two of them quietly navigated through the sea of people and held tight to each other all through the night. The sounds of battle echoed throughout the place, but soon it had ended. They waited it out. Fearing for the worst the whole expirence brought the pair somewhat closer together. Now Chihiro's birthday is one week away.
Sample RP: What was the point of opening one's eyes when the same vision would come rushing back to them? The same scene. Unchanging. That was why Chihiro didn't even bother to raise her lids and expose her retinas to the world. All she would see was blue. Blue and white. The blue ocean and white platform of ice which served as her raft, along with the chunks of ice floating in the ocean around her. The sky would be the same. An endless abyss of pale blue with the occasional streaks of white clouds.
The two mirrored each other so perfectly it was as if one could switch the sea with the sky and nobody would be able to tell which was which. Her eyes needed the rest anyways. She'd been crying so much they hurt and now her entire being was so devoid of water she couldn't produce tears anymore. Oh how cruel irony was. A little girl surrounded by water, yet can't even spare a drop for a tear to leave her reddened eye. It was pointless for her to even attempt to recall how long she'd been floating here.
How long had her world consisted of a tiny hunk of ice in a vast ocean? How long had it'd been since she'd last heard her mother's voice, seen her face, or felt the warmth that radiated from her with every hug? How long would she lay here with her back pressed up against this tiny platform of ice, with the cold seeping into her body and killing her slowly? She didn't know, and that's what infuriated her more than anything else. All this little girl wanted right now, in this moment, was for someone to come and take her home. But which way was north? Suddenly a massive tidal wave lurched forward to send her ice-raft flying through the air...
"EEEEEK!" Chihiro screamed at lurched upright in her bed, clinging the covers for dear life. Her bright sapphire eyes scanned her surroundings. A tiny room with the walls painted a dark shade of blue, depicting an underwater scene. Otterturtles seemed to swim from wall to wall and finally ending at her door. Suddenly her door would smack against the wall with so much force it sent a tremor through the tiny house. Her mother stood there with a rolling pin in one hand, obviously ready to knock the living daylights out of any potential threat. "What is it!? What's the ma--" Upon seeing her daughter still in bed, perfectly safe and screaming about nothing, the woman sighed and rolled her eyes. "Chihiro...its late. It was just a dream...go back to sleep." She droned on in an exasperated tone. "But mooom! It was horrible! Lei and I were waterbending...and...then there was this whirlpool! And an ice raft! And then-- and then-- and then there was this GIANT wave that was ten miles high!" For each description offered, Chihiro pantomimed it for her mother, making all the sound effects and mimicking it as closely as one possibly could. Only after her mother's patented "GO TO BED!" stare did she retreat back into the covers and wave goodnight, as her mom closed the door and left.
