I've noticed that for some people (including myself) it can sometimes be difficult to developt the details expect of us for our profiles. Especially for things like faces. I really couldn't figure out how to portray things like face, eyes and nose shape and it took me a lot of profile digging and term researching to get it down.
So... I suggest a thread somewhere that can show various examples describing anime characters (prefferably from ATLA) which would allow newcomers to understand how to describe certain physical features without going through hell for it. ^^; Just a thought.

Well.. perhaps this would help. Do not think of anime characters. Think of real people.
Perhaps this all comes easy to me because I'm an artist I drew people and figures all the time, therefore I have to know facial structure.
Just think of your relatives and friends. Perhaps someone you know has sunken-in cheeks and well definied cheekbones? Maybe a friend has really thing lips but a huge chin. Does your father have a wide, flat nose? Eye-shapes vary throughout everyone! There's a girl down my hall here that has huge, beautiful eyes! I've seen guys with the total opposite.. small, narrow, beady eyes. Somepeople have high forheads, others have lower hairlines. Somepeople have crooked noses, or noses with a bump on the bridge. Don't forget any wrinkles! I got a wrinkle on my forehead and I'm only 19!
The key here is to thinking of real people because anime-characters, no matter how much work the artist puts into it, will all share the same basic structure. I'm just thankfull that they show a difference between the nations at all. For example: WaterTribe - Round faces, flat, large noses Fire Nation: Pointed chins, slanted eyes, pointed noses.
Maybe that will help, but I assure you, you guys are not the frist to be run through the profile guantlet.

Yes, I think the fact that your an artist gives you a significant advantage in describing the physical features of characters. What I meant was, some sort of display (with pictures) that shows what certain features look like. This way, people could choose what kind of feature they want for their character and describe it as such without too much trouble.

It would be helpful, but how exactly do we do that?

I'll try and look up something similar. There's got to be some kind of guide on the internet for this sort of thing.
