I've heard it said that the water tribes have the darkest skin of all the nationalities, but I noticed in the series of episodes dealing with the Northern Water Tribe that some of the population, including Hahn (Princess Yue's fiancé) had very light skin, though not as light as the Fire Nation...This is probably only the minority and only in the north pole, though, but couldn't a Northern Water Tribe character theoretically be created with fair skin and still be canonical?
This is the only thing on this subject that I can think of right now, but I thought I'd point it out. Any other observations about the races of the Ava-verse that you'd like to point out?

That is true, but we want to make sure people understand that the water Tribes are the darkest.. so if they say "Light skinned and fair compared to their darker tribes man.." that's fine.
Each group has it's own genetic indentity
Water Tribes - All shades of Blue Eyes, Darkest Skin, Small, pushed back noses and very dark brown hair.
Fire Nation - Gold to brown shades of eye color, Lightest skin, pointed features, darkest hair of all.
Earth Nation - Brown shades or Green Shades, Variety of Skin tone, Tend to have somewhat rugged features, but also varied, and a variety of hair color.
Air Nomads - Aside from grey-brown eyes and pale skin.. we really don't know but I have a feeling they have the widest variety of hair color.. I'd even go so far as to say they can have light haircolor too.

I guess that's a good point; people just don't seem to know how to word things well, I guess.
My namesake character, Denshi, is based on me, and he's from the Northern Water Tribe, but the problem is, I look like I'd be from the Fire Nation! Light brown eyes, dark hair, pale skin, pointy features, and everything! This is why I brought this up, just for the day when benders are allowed, and I can post Denshi's true profile and he actually can look like me and still be canonical. ;D

Don't get your hopes up. U,u I also highly recommend not basing characters of of you because.. well you want to be a waterbender (Won't happen for at least a few months) but look like a Earth Kingdom or Fire Nnation Citizen. Also.. I don't allow light skinned Water Tribers easily.

One can hope, can't he? Besides, I doubt I'll be patient enough to wait until you folks allow benders again. I may just post another of my original characters. Oh, and don't think that I was hinting that you would let a non-canonical character in or anything by saying that I don't look like a waterbender, but I was just saying how I usually have to adapt my characters to actually look canonical. I can definitly see that you moderators don't mess around...

I believe it was Jialing (corrected me if I'm wrong on any of this) who pointed at that Water Tribes are particularly dark mostly due the poles lessening of UV or atmospheric sheilding from the sun coupled with the fact that snow can reflect sunlight. Which why they're often darker than anyone else in the Avaverse.
As for why the Northern Tribe being lighter than the Southern Tribe (other than the visual metaphor of their current conditions) is that the planet also has a tilt much like Earth. And because of that the planet's southern hemisphere recieves more sunlight on average than the northern hemisphere. So the Southern Water Tribe's bodies had to adapt even further to account for this.
Or I could be wrong. >.>

I believe you're right about that, Chamir, but I think it also has to do with the sunlight reflecting off the snow and larger intakes of vitamin D due to eating a lot of fish.

Well well... aren't we getting a little CREATIVE Jia? ;D If Malu shows up, they'd better become at least SLIGHTLY cannon, so I can FINALLY have my blondie airbender. ;D

We'll just have to see.. Hopefully sometime we'll see more flashbacks of airbender. All I have to say is.. Aang's eyebrows looked awfully light.. and the air avatar we saw in the Avatar State had very light brown hair.

They'll have to do it EVENTUALLY... or else the Avatar cycle will end, and Nick just can't let things end badly, can they? ;D

If there are ppl in the avatar world whos skin or eye color arent the same as the others of their nation thats to be expected. Think about it this way, remember that episode the blind bandit, where there was the earthbender from the fire nation, well its perfectly possible that say Hahns ancestors could have married with someone from the fire nation (pick one it doesnt matter) and the light skin gene could have been passed down to him. And Xin Fu has Very dark skin, black hair, and grey eyes he could have ancestors from all four of the nations for all we know. You just have to remember just like the real world ppl dont have to marry ppl of the same ethnicity or skin color.

Think about it this way, remember that episode the blind bandit, where there was the earthbender from the fire nation Naru.. That guy.. was a joke. The whole Earth Rumble VI was a paraody of professional Wrestling (which my boyfriend is a huge fan of). All of those characters? Were simply characters for them to act in the ring. That guy was an earthbender.. or a non-bender.. but his 'character' was a Fire Nation. Notice the Russian Accent? Yeah... total paraody. He did not have any connection to Fire Nation.

Haruko-san, you are so right! That proves that there has to be at least some Air Nomads or Airbenders left, or else the entire avatar cycle will come to an end...
I believe it was Wikipedia that pointed out how there probably were some Air Nomads who weren't at any of the air temples at the time of the attacks from the Fire Nation, seeing as how they are nomads, after all...
But this may pose a few problems for the name of the show...

Actually, that wouldn't create a problem with the name. It's called Avatar: the Last Airbender, not Avatar: the Last Air Nomad.
