Okay, I have about no experience with forum RP and I was wondering about how a couple of things usually done. So if anybody who would want help me out, I would be very happy ;D Can you just join an RP thread? Should you contact the Original poster? all participants? Isn't 150 words quite much when having a conversation or when fighting for example? Is Mary Sue for anybody irritating or just "uber" characters, who lack flaws or are like the tv show characters. Any other basic info that could be useful, please tell me. I wish to make a good start. If anybody wants to help me out with a nice start in a RP thread, that is welcome too

First off, welcome to Feng Shui! If it's you're first attempt at a forum RP, then most members will be happy to help you get accustomed to the board.
Joining: Sometimes RPs are open to everyone and sometimes they're private. More often than not you can just jump into a story if it's just starting. However, if the plot has already advanced considerably or there is already a lot of people in the RP, it's best to PM the thread's creator to see if there's room for you to join.
Post length: 150 words is more of a guideline than an actual rule (to quote PotC). The aim of this board is to provide a quality RPG in which the story is more than just back and forth lines of dialogue. Write about your character's thoughts, their surroundings, their little habits that they do when their bored. It's that kind of stuff that makes the stories more immersive. As for fighting, I suppose it may just be me but I can sometimes take a few paragraphs to describe just a few seconds of combat. When fighting, make sure your opponent can understand what you've done. It's very frustrating when your opponent pulls off a move that leaves you clueless as to what's going on.
'Mary Sues' are basically characters that are just one big cliche... I.E. "the last survivor of a massacre," "the youngest bending master ever," "prettiest...," etc... Just make your character believable, unique, and fitting to the Avatar world.
Other than that, the best advive I can give is to read a few RPGs and just try and soak in the general way things go.
Good Luck! ;D

Okay, I have about no experience with forum RP and I was wondering about how a couple of things usually done. So if anybody who would want help me out, I would be very happy ;D Oh, I suppose I'll answer some of your questions. Can you just join an RP thread? Should you contact the Original poster? all participants? I usually PM the starter of the thread for permission first. Isn't 150 words quite much when having a conversation or when fighting for example? Not really. You get used to it after a while. Think of all the things that could happen in an RP post. Your body could change positions, you could change facial expressions, you could describe the world around you, a change in the world around you, a change in another character, a change in something your character thinks, feels, is, and if you're REALLY desperate, you could talk about his/her past. Is Mary Sue for anybody irritating or just "uber" characters, who lack flaws or are like the tv show characters. Mary Sues are covered in the opening rules post, I believe. They are also in the profile forum, in which Jia explains how to make an original character. Please consult those first, but here are some other sources... www.musogato.com/avatar/index2.html (From here, navigate to Extra, Interactive, then click on the 'Original Avatar Mary Sue quiz' and take it. I got a 14 I think. ;D) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue Any other basic info that could be useful, please tell me. I wish to make a good start. If anybody wants to help me out with a nice start in a RP thread, that is welcome too Please consult 'Rules' and 'Profile Help' threads for other help, as I really don't know what else to help you with... o.0 Welcome to Feng Shui, and please enjoy your stay! ;D

Thanks for the welcome. Mary Sues are covered in the opening rules post, I believe. They are also in the profile forum, in which Jia explains how to make an original character. Please consult those first, but here are some other sources... I read those, but I some other posts in the forum made me doubt about the term mary sue. I scored 8 , but then again, not all can apply to my character as, for example his story is far from finished. (it didn't even started yet)
