All I can say is that the use of those earthen/mud/clay/whatever gloves by the Dai Li guards was ingenious, and probably my favorite usage of earthbending to date. ;D

This all makes sense. The only way they can keep the people of Ba Seng Sei in control is to use complete dictatorship. They're like bloody communists... -_-'
I suppose that we will have to change around our RP style in Ba Seng Sei from casual to serious. This is simply the most astonishing thing I've ever seen. So many adult concepts on this show... the creators are simply GENIUS.
And... as I knew it would, and will continue to preach, everything is turning rotten. ;D

Actually, its not communism or dictatorship. Its a mix of the Hindu caste system, where you have the communist like fear of the government along with a forced utopia. See? I know my evil stuff. The episode was so cool... the whole brainwashing thing, my mouth was on the floor.

Who wants to start a club?

The episode was so cool... the whole brainwashing thing, my mouth was on the floor. The keeping information from the society was quite like the russian communism, however you can't deny it also happends in western societies. I wouldn't compare the social rings to the hindu caste system, as it had nothing to do with birth and it was possible to go into a higher ring, it had actually more social mobility than many European systems of miedeval times. I think it's closer to the ancient china system, where empires were made into small "gods" and most was dedicated to serving the empire. I would need to do some research to be sure. ;D Jet seemed a bit reckless to me, I expected him to come with a better plan, still he was great. I wonder what kind of effect the brainwashing will have on him. Iroh was great, simple as that.

I honestly have to say, the whole bear sequence had me cracking up. "Surely you mean platapus-bear?"
That, and poor Joo Dee. I wanted so much for her to just slap them and say, "Why don't you face the Dai Lee then?!" I absolutely loved her face and expressions XD

I actually think its the Hindu Caste system and the ancient china system tied together. And yes, I prefer commies!!

I looked up Dai Lee and it was the name of a famous guy who was part of chinas secret police, and Im glad we get to see the Earth Kings dark side in this episode.
My view of Long Feng has changed slightly though the idea of him being tratorous is still a possibility he could possibly be misled though it is probably both he is just greedy and wants to keep his power
I can see Aang revealing the true nature of Long Feng to the Earth King at the end of this book and he would propably be banished and go to the Fire Nation like the power hungry little traitor he is.

Well, we really never saw anything of the Earth King, just a vague silhouette, so I wouldn't say that he has a 'Dark Side' just yet. It's far more likely that he's just trapped in Long Feng's web of power. The Earth King might be just a powerless puppet with the military and municipal powers over Ba Sing Sei in Long Feng's hands. Long Feng himself hardly seems like a traitor at this point, though. The potential for him to cut a deal with the Fire Nation in order to remain in a position of power after the city has fallen is still pretty good, but I don't think the writers will make him a traitor. He seems just horribly disillusioned that the city is truly impenetrable. So untouchable perhaps that he deems the Fire Nation simply unable to break through no matter what. That would make sense since he only seems interested in keeping order in the city and not in stopping the war outside the walls. As for Aang revealing Long Feng's nature, something tells me the King already knows. Though i have a feeling that Aang and Co. will somehow get a chance to speak with the Earth King and eventually inspire him to take back his power from Long Feng and resume the fight against the Fire Nation. To put this on a time line, I'd say the great shift in power will take place right near the end of Book 2. It'll probably end with some kinda battle between the Gaang and the Dai Lee, all in the backdrop of a Fire Nation attempt to breach the inner wall. The last episode will probably involve Appa rejoining the group and the Earth Kingdom army preparing for an invasion against the Fire nation. I'm also going to call Aang beginning to learn Firebending from either Iroh or Zuko during this time of preparation. ADEN HAS SPOKEN!

This episode was all kinds of creepy (but that's what made it so awesome).
- Felt bad for Ju-Dee. At first she annoyed me/creeped me out. Then I saw her at the party, and when she got replaced......I fear the worst. - Jet was crazy. It kinda sucks that he was telling the truth though (but not really, since Zuko and Iroh have no sinister motives). - Aang and Sokka were funny. It's nice to see they're becoming better friends. - "It just says bear."......."This place is weird." XD - Creepiest. Ending. Ever. o.O;
I love how Avatar pushes how far it can go. BTW, anyone picking up 1984 vibes from this episode (and a little Stepford Wives when it came to the Ju-Dees)?

1984 requires the enture subjugation of the world, inside and out. The introduction of new people (AKA refugees) into the society of BSS automatically disqualifies it as a candidate for 1984 lookalike. Also, there is no Blackwhite, Doublethink, or Crimestop. Thus, Ba Seng Sei, although a good try, is not 1984.
That was a good book. ;D

Wow. Y'know, it kinda stinks that Jet's going to be brainwashed into a peace-loving-drone. I almost feel sorry for him.
Key word: almost.
...And Ju Li was just plain creepy. *Shudders*

ADEN HAS SPOKEN! whoops i didnt mean to say the Eart Kings Dark side I meant we got to see that the Earth KINGDOM wasn't so great as we all thought, the people are seperated by class the government is hypnotising people it really makes me rethink if they are really the good guys (Ba Seng Se at least) it also made me think back to the library where Wong Si Tong said, "You think your the first to think your war was justified" If we really looked at this war from the fire nations perspective (modern not old genocidal) we might see there are good people there too
