Alright all you lucky people, it's finally the day you've been waiting for - the bender ban is off! However, we will still have a way of limiting benders. If a person should decide they want their character to be a bender, then the mod reviewing the profile shall flip a coin; if he/she gets heads, congratulations, it's a bender. If tails, well... you get the idea. However, we will push hard for nonbending. Most often than not, bending is a Mary Sue trait, and will be treated as such due to it's offical, cannon rarity.
This policy will most likely be temporary until a more effective solution is thought of, but in the meantime, this is the policy we shall stand by. We don't want to see anyone whining about the results of the coin toss; we understand that you only have the mod's word to go by in this situation regarding the outcome of the coin toss, but the mods have promised to stick to the honor code.

Whoopie Doo! I'll probably RP with Fudo for a few months before trying for bending... No point rushing is there...Fudo is just as good as any bender anyway X) Good luck everyone I hope you get your benders. Thanks for the update Xia.

*reads thread title*
What in name of Ozai with a seven-tiered pagoda shaped hat and wearing a rearless green kilt with orange and blue polka dots and a crotchless, red lacy g-string dancing with a hoola hop and singing “Milkshake” while Mark Hamil, Suki and the Kiyoshi warriors throw dollar bills at him?
o.0
*reads details*
Ah~~!
Well surely this laudatory action will provide our little family of a board with much joy, excitement, entertainment and head banging. =D
I wish the best of luck to the bender applicants. >=D
Give them hell ladies!—and men!
And with that…

What timing. I registered just yesterday and posted my profile, only hours before I find out that he could have been a bender. Ah well, I suppose you are right about benders being mary Sues most of the time. Maybe I will make my next character a bender.

Hhhmmmm.... Ive had an idea about bending allowance: Say, you choose the top 5 posters, most active, most dedicated members of the board and those who dont have too many benders. Then every...sayy....3-5months a coin is flipped for every one of those five people. Say 3 out of five get heads = They get the choice of benders. The 2 others dont, but they can still come up next time. Then the 3 enter profiles...and if you think at this point they can carry off a bender then you allow it. If not then they can always get a chance next time. This would be much fairer to the current way because people wouldnt get their hopes up and people wouldnt post soley bender profiles.

That's rather complicated :/ Besides, who's to say those five people would even want another character? Our point in flipping the coin is that it is random, just as bending ability is (at least in some way) in the Ava-world.
We encourage everyone not to create a character based around a bending ability because there is only a 50/50 chance it will be allowed.

Exactly...So whats the harm if those people dont want a bending character. Isnt that better for the community so we dont get over loaded. Plus the way this board is run, well it doesnt have the same looseness as the avaverse so the same view on rules should be applied to bending rules?

Well looking at the top Posters.. It's Me and Raine and Reed. Go fig. Not exactly viable since.. it's been that same top three for months, nearly half a year. (ha! I finally surpassed Raine in post count!)
As for active members.. all our active members are the ones you see on a daily basis.
Honestly Fudo.. your idea isn't fairer.. these numbers rarely changed in the past 6 months, and the active people already have characters out the whazoo and many of them are beyond the 3 character limit. The Coin flip is the fairest, easiest and most undisputed way we have.
As for people getting their hopes up and a creating a profile simply based on a bender - Don't. Plain and simple. Don't get your hopes up an write a profile in such a way that bending isn't a huge deal, but that you can always add on to it if you get lucky. Plain and simple, people.

I don't mean to be disloyal to the almighty decisions of the mods, but I think it would be important for someone to know whether or their character is a bender, before they write the profile. Something like the ability to bend would have a massive impact on that person's life, personality, even choice of weapons. If someone, writes a character that is not a bender, and then the coin flip allows them to be one, then they would have to change a lot about the character in order for it to be realistic. Also, if someone writes a profile for a bender, and then the coin flip declares them devoid of the skill, then that person is either forced to drastically change the profile or, throw away all of that work. I can't think of a better solution right now, but that is just my two cents on the decison. In reality, it affects me very little because I won't be making a new character for a while. I haven't even made my first post with Tomo yet. Which reminds me (insert shameless plee for help, and posts on my thread over at the RP discussion board)

I'd think the best way to handle this would be to submit a profile that was more or less a frame for the character. Perhaps an appearance, clothing, and personality, maybe even a sample RP. but just leave the bakground section, or anything else that hinges heavily on whether or not the character is a bender, blank.
Then just request that before a Mod waste the effort reviewing the profile that you be given the verdict of the coin flip.

As Jia would say.... don't build a character around bending.
And if you make a non-bender, then you're a non-bender -- no coin flip if you don't want to be a bender. So there shouldn't be any problem there.
Hey, you know, I never claimed that this site was easy. Try FB if you don't want to put in effort and work.

Have you guys considered dice? invisiblecastle.com/rolldice.py90-100 would be bender and everything else would be non-bender? I say that because it's what, ten percent? And if you roll 1d100, the numbers are easy to manage. Not to mention the fact that you can copy-paste results and cut down on any whining. =3

We considered dice... but 10% is a rather small amount. The coin flip seems to be working just fine now, but thank you for the suggestion ^^
