Name: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan Author: Lisa See Setting: China, early 1800's Synopsis: A young girl named Lily goes through the hardships of a woman's life in the early 1800's. However, not like some of the girls of her standing, she is ritually bound to a laotong -- an "old same" -- a relatinship more important than the one she was about to embark on: an arranged marraige. Why I liked this Book: *emulates a second grade student* I liked this book because *clears throat* This book is very different than the Japanese-set books I normally read. Like Memiors of a Geisha, this book show a world of women, one secret to men, and it focuses on the deep love -- almost sexual relationship -- of Lily and Snow Flower. But the Land of China is not the Land of Japan. Social rules and customs, seemingly similar at first are very different. It's like something familar with a fresh splash. The writing is vivd with description but tasteful, and there was a wide range of vobaulary. The book touched on every type of relationship a woman could have -- mother, father, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, cousin, friend, lover, husband, children, stranger, in-laws, peasants, those of higher class, and much, much more. I connected with the characters, and I ended up crying several times. Other: I recommend this book for 14+; there are some slightly sexual scenes as well as innuendo. And yes, there is implied lesbianism.
