In the last half of the last episode of avatar, Zuko goes in for a brief conversation with Ozai. It looked like a new plot of sorts was going to develop, as he wants Ozai to tell him what happened to his mother. But that's it. No expansion. Why do you think that is?

Because they ran over the alotted airtime with all the other EPIC STUFF that was going on and couldn't fit in the scene where Zuko is reunited with his mother. I think one of the creators mentioned that in an interview. It was all storyboarded out, but they just didn't have any room to squeeze it into the show.
So, even though we didn't see it with our own eyes, it's pretty much canon that Zuko's mom was indeed alive and they were reunited.

They could have made the last episode an hour special.

They could have made the last episode an hour special. The last episode was already a 4-part, 2-hour special.

Oh, I wasn't aware. I never watched it on TV, just on my avatar DVDs. They have them separated into regular episodes. Do you think the fans would be disappointed if a fourth book was added?
