Name: Katara
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Nation: Southern Water Tribe
Bender?: Yes
Physical Appearance: Katara is a young woman of the once proud people of the Southern Water Tribe. Her face shows her pride, with her dark almond colored skin and large, blue eyes. However, she is still a girl. She had a button nose that turns up, narrow eyebrows and soft lips. Her hair is a rich color of chocolate, neatly combed and pulled away from her face, save for two thing strands that hang from her hair line, with each a blue bead, to her chin and then trail back to a bun that sits at the base of her skull. A thin braid of hair then falls to the small of her back where a blue ribbon keeps it neat.
Clothing/Armor: Katara does not wearing any armor, but rather a simple kimono of pale blue fabric, trimmed in a pearly white. The short sleeves sit over a undershirt of a brighter blue whose puffy sleeves fall over the top of navy blue arm warmers. The Kimono is held by a white band of ribbon, and is split from the bottom of the white trim to her thigh. She wears navy blue leggings undernethe the kimono. This 'warm weather' look is completed with seal fur lined boots.
Her Winter wear is very different, consisting of a thick parka worn over the 'warm weather' outfit. This parka begins with a hood lined with thick, white fur that probably came from a polar bear. Katara oftens wears the hood down. Three furred feathers are attached at the top of her shoulder, where the thick, pale blue sleeves whose hem consists of a darker band and more of that thick white fur. There is a traditional watertribe design consisting of varying purple waves that traverse vertically down the front of the parka to a belt of white fur. The dress section of the parka is plain, and falls to her ankles in a bell shape, with the front and back pointed and hemmed in fur. Katara also wears thicker, dark blue, pants to keep her legs from freezing.
Her most cherished item is a necklace that she was given to by her Mother, who inturn received it from her Mother. The Choker is a dark blue ribbon, from which a gold clip suspends a carved stone bearing the ensignia of waterbenders.
Weapons: Katara uses no weapons, instead fighting with waterbending. Or 'Magic' as Sokka liked to call it.
Personality: Katara is very sweet and caring, almost motherly to her younger friends. Having lost her mother at an early age has forced Katara to grow up rather quickly and she is used to babysitting her old Brother, Sokka. She is also very trusting and upon meeting Aang, Katara was the first one to trust him and recognize him as the Avatar.
However, Katara is not also so sweet. She has a voliatile anger that when provoked causes her waterbending to affect any bodies of water around her. This anger comes in bursts, and her sweet nature is often returned quickly.
Finally, Katara can be very brave when needed, but shows her fear more often than once. She is willing to fight, but will never be able to put on a cold, stotic face.
Background: Katara was a baby born to a warrior and his beautiful wife in the South Pole. Their daughter was the light of their eyes, the star of the ocean they called her. They named her Katara, baby sister to an Older brother named Sokka. As a toddler Katara discovered rare water bending abilities, something which had not been seen in the tribe in at least a generation. Her father, Hakoda was ecstatic and set out on a journey to try and find Katara a bending instructor.. someone, anyone, who knew how to bend. He knew Katara's gift was something special, but alas, he found nothing but blowing snowdrifts. Her gift, her natrual talent, would have to wait. Katara had a relatively peaceful life as a young child. The war was always around her and she did not think much of it before the attack. The once glorious city of ice had since been melted, and Katara's world consisted on the remaining village of Souther Water Tribers. She helped her mother around the village, assisting the other women in the daily chores while her brother trained to be a warrior. These chores were relatively simply and included many things such as mending clothing, and patching tends. Katara also became skilled in cooking what little food they could get from fishing. The meals were often bland, without the rare spices and seasoning from the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation. Often times it was fish and only fish, maybe with some seal jerky thrown in. Trade vessel never visited the south pole, the Tribe isolated from all contact. Her grandmother, Kana and who Katara called ' Gran Gran', often assisted around the camp with the birth of children and the care of the sick. Katara accompained her on these trips, learning how to care for people in a variety of different ways. As a child, Katara thought she might grow up to become a mid-wife in the South Pole, developing a love for hearing a baby's first cry.
Her brother, Sokka, meanwhile didn't care for any of the 'girlie stuff' and often spent his days playing with the older boys of the tribe, pretending to be a warrior when they traine. Sokka adored the warriors of the South Tribe and strived to be like them, perfecting his boomerang skills in hope of one day fighting against the Fire Nation. Katara thought he was full f himself.
The peaceful life of the South Pole was shattered when Katara was eight years old. The Fire Nation attacked for an reason unknown to Katara. It might have been a raid.. it might have been simply for fun. She's not sure.. This attack destroyed what was left of the Water Tribe, leaving their numbers below 100. They were reduced to a smidgen of what they had been before, camping in tents around a communal fire kept going by the few peices of wood they could salvage from old water tribe boats and drift wood. Katara lost someone very dear to her, her best friend, Her beloved mother. Katara's mother was the victim of severe burns, and died shortly after the attack. The death left Katara devastated for days, and she refused to speak to anyone, to move from her bedding. Eventually, her greif lapsed and Katara was able to move on her life. With only her Brother and Her Father left, Katara tried to continue on where her Mother left off by taking on the household aspects of their life. She did more of the laundry, cooked more, cleaned the tent and tried to become a leader in the tribe. Her Gran-Gran assisted the family and took over the job of raising Katara in a fine young woman.
Katara continued to hone her water bending abilities, practicing whenever she got the chance though she had nothing to practice with. Her father told her everyday that one day her abilities would bring hope to the Souther Water Tribe again. Swallowing hard, her heart a lump in her throat, the little girl believed them and never let go. The inspiration was nearly lost when Katara was 12. The Earth Kingdom had sent a request, asking for the aid of the Southern Water Tribe. What men they could send, left the south pole, Her father leading them. They did not know where they sent off to, but knew that their help could mean much in this endless war.
A depression gripped Katara once again, but she dealt with it better. Her mother's necklace had been left to her, and often, she looked to the beautiful water bending carving as a source of hope and strenght. Katara continued to preform her duties, doing more than her fair share of work and often working late into the evening by a fire sewing and mending more clothing. In the darkness she tells herself stories from a long ago era, stories her mother and Gran Gran both told her. Stories of the Ancient Avatar.

"Really now, Sokka, Do you really think that you can just dip your clothes in a river and call them clean?!" Katara scolded her brother, her bare hands on her hips as she stood across the small stream. One eye lifted, her lips in a disappoving pout as she watched. Sokka, proclaiming that soap was not needed, had proceeded to strip his pants off and started dunking them in the river. Her blue eyes rolled away from her brother as she turned her back to him. One arm folded across her torso, her other hand folding up so that her fingertips rested against her temple. Boys were such idiots..
After a moment, the young girl turned back to her Brother and threw her arms out to her side as she leaned forward. "Fine. You want to just use water to clean yourself, then go right ahead."
Bringing her arms inward, She lifted her head and stared down her nose in concentration. Her brows furrowed and her lower lip quivered. A pillar of streaming water lifted up from the stream, following the movements of her arms and hands. The pillar twisted and turned, unnoticed by Sokka who was too busy boasting about his greatness. The water, governed by her arms and hands, collasped into a minature tsunami that spread out towards the kneeling Sokka. The wave washed over him, drenching not only his pants, but his shirt and his hair. A grin passed on Katara's face, a laugh freely escaping her.
