Name: Mai
Age: Fourteen
Group: Fire Nation Military
Nation: Fire Nation
Bender?: No
Physical Appearance: Mai, being five feet and four inches in height, is a girl of ordinary stature, although her lanky shape and long spine make her seem much taller when coupled by her good posture. She is clearly on the scrawny side of the spectrum, possessing few small curves, a small bust, and plenty of bones and joints that stick out more than she would like. She has little muscle definition, but even less body fat. Her limbs are quite long comparatively speaking, and her fingernails are sharp, pointy and always painted black.
Her skin is a fair ivory color, and her thinly slitted eyes are a pale shade of gold. Her narrow nose protrudes not far from her triangular face, while her forehead is high and round, though usually hidden under her bangs. She has a mouth of proportionate width but thin lips, and her face evens out on bottom with a delicately rounded jawline and weak, mildly pointed chin before curving into a long, slim neck.
Her thick, pitch-black hair is straight with a nice, even sheen. It is fashioned intricately, tied into two small buns on either side of the top of her head. Its remainder hanging into a loose bun in back with a streas of hair issuing from either side of this bun and draping over her shoulders to fall halfway down her back. Her bangs are short and perfectly even, covering down to the top of her eyebrows.
Clothing/Armor: Mai's clothing begins with a layer of undergarments and bindings in their proper places.
Over these is a turtleneck shirt colored a dusty red with long, bell-shaped sleeves that cover her hands and the black fingerless gloves that end almost at her elbows. Over this is a sleeveless tabard of the deepest, darkest shade of maroon, one that has wide shoulders, pale silver edging on the top half that ends at the waist, and a hem that falls halfway down her calves. This item of clothing, which is otherwise voluminous, is tied down around at the area between her bust and waist by a wide black sash that has a round decorative silver button in front.
She wears a pair of wide-legged, pleated hakama colored the same as her shirt, into which her shirt is tucked, and these are held up by a thin black sash around her waist. Tall, lightweight black socks that end right below her knees are worn with her black shoes that curl up at the toe.
Sometimes she wears a burgundy cloak that reaches her ankles. Part of it folds over on top to hang down at elbow-level with white fur trim, and it fastens at her neck with a diamond-shaped clasp with a Fire Nation emblem embossed on the front.
She wears several items hidden beneath her clothes due to her use of concealed weaponry. These are comprised of the four holsters she wears, one on each forearm and shin, and wedged securely onto her shins and forearms due to their being worn over her gloves or socks. These hold about eight stilettos in each, spring-loaded, and are hidden by her loose clothing, be it her sleeves or pant legs.
Another holster is worn around a black leather belt on her waist, and this has two brown leather pieces attached to the belt, falling down both sides of her hips. It has rows of pockets where she keeps her throwing blades, and the entire garment is kept hidden by her tabard.
Weapons: She uses a wide array of specialized throwing blades, ranging from plain blades to six-pointed stars, or even a variety that unfolds and locks into a three-pointed shape reminiscent of the Fire Nation emblem. All these are the same puce color with the edges colored the same as the refined and highly polished iron from which they are made.
For the most part, however, due to their being more efficient, she relies on the stilettos spring-loaded in the holsters worn on her forearms and shins. Each fletched stiletto is about six inches long, with a shaft of teak wood painted black that extends into its pointy, unpainted iron tip. She will either launch these from the holsters or throw them by hand, as either way is effective.
Personality:[/u] Mai is a cold young noblewoman who always keeps an air of poise about her. Her outlook on life is bleak and negative at best, fraught with minor depression and overwhelming boredom. Reserved and generally quiet, she is one to prefer brooding in misery over conversing with someone, but she will readily voice her dissatisfaction if she feels like doing so. Emotion is something she will almost never reveal, whether it by means of her facial expression, bodily gestures, or her tone of voice. She has somewhat of a disdain and distrust for humankind in general, leading her to stick to her small circle of friends rather than branching out to meet new people.
She acts polite around those who deserve respect, but only to avoid the negative reactions that tend to arise from disrespectful traits. Her seemingly hollow sense of humor is blunt, dry and ironic, which, when paired with her stoic nature, makes it quite hard to tell if Mai is joking or not. Mai is intelligent and cunning, yet wise in knowing when to give up if a situation is overwhelming. Though she acts pessimistic all the time, she has an underlying confidence that even she may not recognize at times, obvious in how she is not afraid or intimidated by authority and power. The only possible thing that could be considered a goal for Mai would be to survive all the monotony of her life, just in case more intriguing events arise sometime in the future. She finds true enjoyment in training to use her weapons more skillfully, but as one would expect, she would never make such a passion manifest outwardly.
Background: Mai was born in the grand city of Lun Yang, capital of all the Fire Nation. Born with splendidly fair skin and dark hair, the girl was of an appearance considered beautiful by her parents. However, her father was disappointed, as he had been in eager expectation that his firstborn child would be male, to carry on his name, and her mother knew this all too well. Nonetheless, both parents attempted to love their child, even though she was not what they wanted.
She lived a priveleged life, her father a count in the noble court and her family living off a sizeable inheritance from her paternal grandparents. She grew up a timid child and had no friends, her only company throughout her childhood being none other than her mom and dad.
As time went by, her parents found it increasingly disappointing that they had no son, and Mai was not ignorant of this. She would often overhear her father expressing to her mother his dissatisfaction with Mai being a girl. This upset Mai, but she never let her parents know about it. Instead, she tried to live happily despite thinking she was unwanted by her parents.
At the age of six, she was sent to a boarding school for Fire Nation girls, which changed her life drastically. No longer being looked after by her parents, the shy girl felt all alone in this new and scary place. The schooling part posed no problem for Mai, but the social aspect of it all terrified her. However, not long after her arrival, she met a girl by the name of Ty Lee, a girl who bubbled over with exuberance. Mai found this rather annoying at times, but she was glad that someone wanted to be her friend and Ty Lee grew on her.
Not long after Ty Lee and she established that they were friends, Mai was introduced to another friend of Ty Lee, the princess of the Fire Nation, Azula. Mai found the princess to have a more bearable personality than her first friend, even if she was frequently quite bossy and somewhat cruel to the two. Nonetheless, she was assimilated into the elite group of girls lead by Azula, of which Ty Lee had been for some time.
Time passed and her confidence grew, since she now had friends and past thoughts of being unwanted rarely came to her mind. The occasions when she was allowed to return home to Lun Yang to be with her parents were fun times for her, since she found out Ty Lee and Azula also lived in the city, so the girls could spend even more time together. Mai even got to meet Prince Zuko, Azula's brother, and developed somewhat of a crush on him, admiring him from afar. Neither of her friends knew of this at first, but suspected it for some time, and they eventually found out after Azula forced the truth out of her. Zuko never knew about this, but Azula and Ty Lee did occasionally poke fun at Mai about liking him. Mai countered their teasing with mere eye-rolling, but she never let it affect her much.
But things would change when she was nearing thirteen years of age, when her parents sent her a note informing her that they were expecting another child. She had no clue what to think about this news, knowing she would soon be an older sister. As the date neared when her younger sibling was set to be born, Mai had mixed feelings on the matter. Adding to her sullen attitude was how she soon noticed how talented her friends were compared to her. Azula was a firebending prodigy and Ty Lee, a gifted acrobat, while poor Mai hadn't a skill to call her own.
At that point, she decided was was to adopt a style of fighting to call her own, and, after settling on one, beginning her training in the style she chose, which was the art of concealed weaponry. She became much more serious a person, absolutely focused on being the best she could be, and using her training sessions to channel repressed anger from feeling unwanted or inferior.
Finally, it happened. A healthy baby was born into her family, a boy named Tom Tom. Mai knew all too well that her parents would give her even less attention and prize their new heir, the one they hoped for in place of Mai. Mai sunk into a state of depression, experiencing those same feelings of being unwanted surface again as her parents ceased sending her letters because they were too busy with Tom Tom. She assumed they were too busy to care about her at all, since they now had that son they had always wanted.
She and all her peers at the academy graduated when she was fourteen. She was a bit apprehensive to return home because she knew she would be virtually ignored when she returned home. When she arrived, she met her new brother Tom Tom, who had become the center of attention. Although she resented all the attention her baby brother would received, it was honestly what Mai had expected. Her mother occasionally made attempts to instruct her on how to be a proper lady and took her to a few balls, but this way of life was one found with great displeasure to Mai. Instead, she preferred to practice using her weapons, of which her mother disapproved because they were simply "too dangerous".
About three months ago, her father was granted a new position as the governer of New Ozai, an Earth Kingdom city that was once known as Omashu. This was doubly saddening for her, since her one friend, Ty Lee, had run away to join the circus, and she was going to leave behind her remaining friend Azula, her home, and all that she knew. She found a glimmer of hope in that a change of scenery could be exciting, but, unfortunately, her hopes were shatterred. This move to the Earth Kingdom was boring. In fact, it was even more bleak than life in Lun Yang, and she lives with such incomparable boredom down to this day.
Sample RP: "Farewell, my dear children!" said Mai's mother as she patted Tom Tom and smiled warmly at both her son and daughter. Mai nodded to her mother as she soon saw her heading out the door, after a few minutes of instructing Mai on what to do when babysitting her little brother. She didn't need instructions...every time both her mom and dad went out to a noble court meeting or whatever, Mai was, unfortunately, expected to babysit, and she already knew everything she needed to know, anyway. She loathed babysitting. It cut majorly into time she could spend practicing with her weapons, which was the only thing that kept her sane...
With a deep sigh, she held her brother in her arms, and his big, gray-brown eyes met hers. The little guy was a bother, but Mai knew that she was expected to love her baby brother. She headed to Tom Tom's room and set him on the soft crimson carpet covering the floor as soon as she entered, and the toddler immediately crawled to his favorite teddy bear. She walked over to the balcony extending from her brother's room and leaned over the railing crafted from exotic wood imported from distant tropical lands of the Fire Nation. Life in this city of New Ozai, at least in Mai's opinion, could stand to be more eventful.
She stood for a few minutes, drifting her gaze across the darkened mountainous landscape viewable from the balcony, while the city around her domicile was dotted with lights. It was a grand sight, but one wasted on Mai, whose mind was veiled too much by supposed misery to appreciate the wonderous sights of this new land, which could be seen everywhere around her. She sighed again.
Soon, she felt a tug on her pant leg and looked down to see Tom Tom sitting and beckoning with monosyllabic squeals and grunts for her to play with him. She turned aside, brushing him off. "Sorry, kid...I don't feel like it..." Mai muttered in a dreary tone.
Tears welled up the boy's eyes, and he started whimpering, tugging at her pant leg again. Mai looked back at the child and rolled her eyes in an exceptionally dramatic manner. "Whatever..." she said before proceeding to pick up the boy and carry him over to a chair, where she sat and bounced Tom Tom on her knee, as he babbled excitedly while continued with the same stone face. Deep down, however, as the boy's gleeful face lay before her, she thought to herself The little twerp isn't that bad...
