Name: Pika Harta
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Group: Northern Water Tribe Warriors
Nation: Northern Water Tribe
Bender?: yes
Physical Appearance: Pika has a slender frame, with muscles that are well defined but not bulging. He stands roughly at 5'5", and weighs 138lbs...basically making him appear to be a rather short and unimpressive figure to behold. His skin is a pale brown shade, and his eyes are a soft caroline blue. His bistre hair is long, falling to just a little past his shoulders. While he does wear the traditional warriors wolf tail, he has three braids just above his right ear that are pulled back into it. His hair has a bit of a natural wave to it, and the bottom layers that are not confined by the cloth strip that holds his wolf tail certainly exhibit this. His face is oval in shape, with high cheek bones, a somewhat short and broad nose, and a cleft chin. His eyebrows are a bit thick, but are nicely shaped over his eyes. Like his sister, Haukea, he is on the skinny side, with long slender hands and limbs. Unlike his sister, he doesn't look like he's just skin and bones, thanks to the muscles carried on his frame from waterbending training.
Clothing/Armor: The first layer of clothing Pika wears is a cornflower blue ao dai over a pair of sapphire shaded trousers. The long tunic has slits on each side and has a hem that falls to just above his knees. The cornflower blue fabric has sapphire trim around the sleeve openings and along the high collar of the ao dai. The garment tapers in at the waist, so there is no need for a belt to cinch it in at the waist. Frog style closures running down the left breast keep the ao dai closed. He tucks his trousers down into a pair of ecru shaded seal skin boots. The boots rise up to just below his knee, and are folded over at the top, displaying an offwhite fur trim.
Over this first layer, Pika wears a thick parka with a hood and a hem that reaches just above his knee cap. The caribou hide garment is dyed cornflower blue. Thin tufts of offwhite fur line the shoulder seams, the hood, the sleeve openings and the hem of the parka, and fur lines its inside as well to keep heat close to his body. A single tail like tuft of fur hangs down from the center of the neckline, hanging down to about the middle of his chest. Similar tail like tufts hang at shoulders, a pair on each shoulder. Aside from the accenting fur, there really isn't much else to the parka. Worn with the parka is a pair of ecru shaded hand gloves, and a sapphire scarf. The scarf is usually just loosely wrapped about his neck, but when the wind is particularly gusty, the scarf is used to protect his nose, cheeks and lips.
With this clothing, he wears a few accessories. Both ears are pierced, and curved snow leopard talons adorn his lobes. On his right index finger, he wears a ring carved from bone. It is wide at the top, and carved into this wide spot is a dot with a half circle over it. It is the mark of the brave, the mark he recieved when he went ice dodging.
Weapons: None. Not very necessary afterall when he is a waterbender and he lives surrounded by ice and snow.
Personality: Pika is a very social creature. he likes getting to know new people and making new friends. He's quick to extend trust to someone new, which on occasion backfires on him. In a group setting, Pika often tries to address the person talking the least in the conversation, to try to coax them into joining the group discussion. If unssuccessful, he won't push it. Because Pika is very social, he does not like to be alone. he much prefers to be in the company of others his age, especially the company of ladies his age. When he is alone, he usually is ducking chores at home or catnapping.
The youngest son of the Harta family is very easy going, and it takes a lot to really provoke his temper. Lobbing insults at him doesn't work the majority of the time, tending to just roll off him like water off a turtle-duck's back. Generally, he'll do his best to walk away from a conflict before things get out of hand. Talking bad about his younger sister, Haukea, is a sure fire way to piss him off. Still, even when mad, Pika is not prone to violence. Most often he'll lash out verbally and basically tear someone down with cruel comments. Often he comes to regret the things he says when his temper is riled, but rarely does he apologize about it.
When it comes to family, no one is closer to Pika than his baby sister Haukea. He confides in her, and she in him. Though he does share somewhat of a bond with the triplets and with his older brothers, the relationship between himself and his father is very strained. Kaimana wishes for Pika to join the Harta fleet, as there are few waterbenders among the merchant family. Pika, however, wants something else with his life. Personally? He'd like to stay at the North Pole, rather than go out to sea for months at a time. He wants to have a chance to have a family and have a real relationship with his wife and kids. He has yet to voice this opinion to his father, simply choosing to put the man off by saying he wants to wait till he reaches his mastery.
Pika spends a lot of his time at the training grounds, either under the instruction of Master Pakku or assisting in teaching the beginners classes. When teaching or attending lessons of his own, the laid back side of Pika seems to disappear, replaced with a more serious young man. He is fair and partial in the beginners classes, and unlike his Master, he is pretty easy on his students. When he sees a student with potential basically wasting his talents, he can turn into a bit of a hard ass. Still...he's nowhere near as tough as Pakku, nor would he want to be.
Recently, Pika has been given the task to teach his sister's new husband to be basic combative bending. Pika does not think much of Hebirei Dangan at this point. He feels the boy wasted years on healing lessons, when Hebirei should've been learning how to defend his home, his family. Pika is very hard on him for this reason. He wants his sister's new husband to be able to defend Haukea. While healing is an art to be respected, healing won't fend off Fire Nation soldiers.
Background: Pika is the youngest son of the Harta family, with seven brothers and one sister. Kaimana, Pika's father, along with his two older brothers, Kai and Ikaika, were rarely home. The Harta family serves as the major merchant family for the Northern Water Tirbe, and as such his father and older brothers spent most of their time on the sea or in the Earth Kingdom. This left his mother, Noelani, alone with the children. Pika in particular was a handful. He was collicky for the first few months of his existence, going on crying jags for hours at a time. This stressed Noelani to no end, and for a time her inlaws moved in to help the poor woman out. After 6 months, eventually the collicky tendancies faded away. As a toddler, he had a tendancy to get into everything, giving his mother even more gray hairs. When his sister, Haukea, was born, he was just 2...and when Haukea grew old enough where she could play with him, his wild child tendancies subsided.
Iakopa, the third eldest son, was often too busy helping his mother with the day to day running of the household, as was Kaleo, the fourth eldest (though he often helped in a much more reluctant fashion). the triplets, Keoni, Kimo and Kakani (the fifth, sixth and seventh oldest), however, were the ringleaders. Often they had Pika and Huakea tag along with them for their various pranks. The thre of them, with their poor younger siblings in tow, manage to pull all kinds of pranks over the years, most notoriously being when they managed to cause a caribou stampede int he middle of one of the major marketplaces in Shai City. More often than not, poor Pika and Hauka would be the ones who got caught, as the triplets were experts at escaping trouble.
Pika was homeschooled by his mother, starting at about the age of four. He learned how to read and to write, and when he wasn't taking lessons, he was expected to help his mother watch Haukea. About the same time he started his schooling, it was discovered that Pika could waterbend. Haukea had been toddling around the house and knocked a pitcher full of water off of a low table. The triplets, who happened to be home, quickly picked up the broken pitcher, but there was still a big puddle of water on the floor. Their mother was in another room, changing bed linens, and it would only be a matter of time before she came back and saw the water. In a panic, Pika made a sweeping gesture...that caused the puddle to scatter, sending moisture all over the small room. Though Noelani was ecstatic to learn that her youngest son was a bender...he and his brothers were still grounded for trying to cover it up.
Soon, Pika's days were filled with lessons at home and training under Master Pakku. Pakku was tough as nails, and he'd come home everyday feeling browbeat and wore out. At first, he absolutely despised the grumpy old man, and often acted out in class because of it. As the years passed though, he grew to accept the old codger. He grew to understand that there was a reason why Master Pakku was as tough as he was. He didn't have to like it...but he could respect that the man was trying to make his students be the best they could be. Once he understood this, he became more serious with his training and his skill progressed as a result.
As Pika grew older, he began to realize that his home life...well, wasn't all that ideal. He would see his friends rush off after class, going off to go fishing with their dad, bragging about how well they'd done it class. Pika didn't have that. In fact, most times he would go for months on end without seeing his father and his older brothers. He wanted that. Pika wanted a father who was there for him. He became almost passive agressive toward the man, so that when Kaimana came home, Pika would barely even speak to him.
Eventually, Iakopa and Kaleo went on to join their father and the rest of the Harta family, sailing off to the earth Kingdom. When it was found out that Haukea was a waterbender as well, she began spending her days between the healing huts and lessons at home. When the triplets hit 16, they joined Kaimana and the rest of the Harta's on the merchant ships, leaving Haukea and Pika to step up to help theirmother out mroe fully. While domestic duties fell to hsi sister, Pika was expected to help with the more heavy duty work. It was a lonely time for him, as without the triplets around, his social circle hand shrunk considerably. He decided to branch out...get to know others his age. And given that he was hitting puberty about this time, he began noticing that girls were...well, rather pretty. over the course of a few months, he bloomed into quite the social butterfly. Pika found he had a very easy manner, especially when it came to talking to girls. He became a master of casual flirting, as well as a bit of a heart breaker. He never managed to get into a serious relationship, mainly because he has yet to find a girl he wants to be serious with.
At 15, Pika went ice-dodging. The Harta family had put in to port to offload Earth Kingdom goods. His father was too busy to take him, but Kai and the triplets went with him. The Harta sons went out into the ice flows...and it was probably the scariest experience any of the elder sons had ever gone through. Pika took a lot of risks out there among the icebergs, and there were a couple points where he had to waterbend to keep the craft being crushed. At the end of the experience, Kai awarded his younger brother the mark of the brave, a dot with a half circle.
Pika was only 17 when the Fire Nation, under the leadership of Admiral Zhao, invaded the North. Despite his youth, he was roped in with other waterbenders to help defend Shai City. It was a frightening time for the young man. He had never been a very violent person, and he was quickly forced to fight to protect his home, his family and friends. The particular group of benders he was assigned to was responsible for collapsing bridges, in hopes of stopping Fire Nation soldiers from advancing too far into the city. He didn't see a whole lot of combat. At one point, his group as a whole sent a wave of water to push Fire nation soldiers into the cold canal waters. That was pretty much the extent of the combat he saw. He was lucky by and large.
After the Seige was over, there were many of the Northern Water Tribe's men who decided to travel to the Earth Kingdom. While there were plenty of young men who scrambled at the chance to get back at the Fire Nation, Pika didn't feel the inclination to volunteer. He wanted to stay home, where he could protect his sister should trouble arise again. Aside from that, he had other issues pressing in on him. Kaimana was pressuring his son, wanting him to join the Harta fleet. There were few waterbenders among the merchant fleet, and Pika would be very useful in protect the ships and cargo. His youngest son, however, wanted nothing to do with going off to sea for months at a time. He wanted to be able to have a family...a real relationship with whoever he chose to marry. How could he be a real father if he was never there? Instead of telling Kaimana how he felt, he simply put his father off, saying that he wanted to reach mastery level before making a decision one way or the other.
The Harta merchant ships happened to be home and were forced to stay during the most recent attack on Shai City, with the hope that they could leave once the city had been repaired. During this second seige on the north, Pika was assigned, along with some of the other younger benders, to defend the shelters. They ended up spending a lot of their time ensuring that bombs from above didn't split the bunkers wide open. Ikaika (29), Kai (26), Iakopa (25) and Kaleo (24) volunteered to help in the battle, serving to help as support to the various groups of warriors defending the city. Keoni, Kimo, and Kekani (all age 20) also did their part, by helping unload some of the civilian ships so that they could be outfitted for use in the fighting. Haukea (16) worked with the healers, assisting as best she could during the seige.
With the Seige over (yes, I know it's still happening RP wise...but by the time this profile gets approved, hopefully it'll be over), Pika is splitting his time between training, helping teach the beginning water benders, and assisting somewhat in the repairs on the city as he has time. As of very recent, he's been asked by his father to teach Hebirei Dangan, his soon to be brother in law, basics of combative waterbending.

All things considered, it was a nice night. The moon was high and bright, the skies clear, with nary a chilling wind upon the air. Families were settling little ones to bed, having just finished dinner. Aside from the call of an occasional pet or two, things were very peaceful and quiet. Inside the Harta home, however, things were not so idyllic.
"Haukea is getting married?" Pika asked in a disbelieving tone.
Kai and Ikaika, two of his older brothers, simply nodded in response. Pika had been late in getting home, tarrying to help escort a particularly buxom healer back to her parents' dwelling. As such, he'd missed the announcement handed down from Kaimana and Noelani to the rest of the Harta sons. In fact, his mother and father had already left with his sister Haukea in tow long before he'd made it in. The laid back waterbender leaned back against the wall, unsure really of how to take the news. Sure, Haukea was of marrying age...but she was still so young. Not to mention naive. She'd never even had a boyfriend before.
"Well...who's she marrying?"
Kai answered, his deep voice low, "Hebirei of the Dangan family."
"Dangan...Dangan...the name doesn't sound familiar. Are they a merchant family? Lesser nobles?"
Ikaika shook his head, responding, "Neither. Apparently this is something mother and father set up when Haukea and Hebirei were very young. I don't know any other details than that."
Kai, the eldest brother, snickered, adding, "Apparently the kid's been taking healer lessons."
Pika blinked, his caroline blue eyes widening, as he processed this. How was it a male had come to train in the healing arts? Wasn't that strictly women's work?
"Does he even know how to fight using waterbending?" Pika asked.
His brothers simply shrugged. This prospect...was not one Pika liked. With the North having been attacked for a second time in such a short time, it was likely the Fire Nation would try again. How would this Hebirei guy be able to protect his sister? The longer he thought on it, the more serious the expression on the normally laid back Pika became. This wouldn't do...not at all. Not for his baby sister.
Later that night, after Kaimana, Noelani and Haukea returned, Pika's father pulled him off to the side. Private lessons were being arranged for Hebirei, to bring him up to speed with the others his age. Kaiman wanted Pika to teach Hebirei in private...and with a devilish grin on his face, the youngest Harta son agreed to it.
