Tseng Wei once more smiled as the painted face girl couldn’t believe that he was still hungry.
“Of course I am my dear,” he said, “One must keep itself up during the night to make sure no one ambushes us.”
When he got to the campfire, he sat down next to Gengoro and stuck a stick into the haunch to hold it over the fire. The bonfire was down to it’s embers now, which means that they will need more wood soon. Gengoro prodded the left over embers to keep the heat going. Once the sun was gone, it was rapidly getting cool.
“So, what the hell was that all about?” Gengoro asked quietly so it couldn’t wake the others. “I had some issues to take care of,” Tseng replied, “Will we do like we always?” “Yes. We will take turns on fire guard. Eat what you can, then go to bed. I’ll do first watch, then I will wake you during the half moment of the night and you will take over.” Tseng nodded with approval. “I’ll go gather some more wood for the fire,” Gengoro said as he got up and skimmed the edges of the wood. While he was gone, Tseng Wei looked over everyone while tearing pieces of the meat he just brought. While still bloody, he let off a smile of sweet satisfaction.

Whatever.. they were both freaking nuts.. Jialing though, her eyes following the cloaked creepy guy that was carrying the large leg of some sort of creature until she couldn't turn her head anymore. She sighed, rolling her eyes as she readjusted her arms on her flat pillow, crossing her wrists to create a higher pillow for her head. She cradled her cheek against the crook of her elbow, squishing her cheek and jaw. If they wanted to stay up and loose sleep.. fine by them. They were moving as soon as she up, awake, and feeling like it.
She closed her eyes, listening to the last few words said by Tsuya, commenting on how the bloody stalk would attract critters. Again, a real stupid move by him. Jialing could only silently hope he had left the corpse FAR FAR away. Whispers now came over the crackling of the fire as it died down. She could hear Tsuya presumably lying down. Reed flopped down next to her, not speaking a word to Jialing who was feigning sleeping.. or at least trying to go to sleep at this point. On the other side.. Jin, still warm from the fire, came to her side, flopping down next to her. Her feet kicked up the cover over her legs and back, and she burrowed down into the sack without a word.

The crackle of the fire could still be heard. The aura of the fire spread itself over the forest that was near here. It would be good to keep away most of the critters at night. Gengoro gathered the wood he needed and walked back to the camp site. Tseng Wei was already in bed with a full belly. Rolling his eyes, he sat next to the fire with Jin nearby.
“You probably don’t like it if I talked to you, do you?” Gengoro asked Jin. He growled as the question was finished, “Fine, have it your way.”
He laid down on his backpack full of traveling gear. He reached in and grabbed a piece of vellum and an ink brush. The ink vial was half empty. He didn’t want to write, but what he felt, he needed to. A letter to Reiko, his lost love.
“I feel the coldness in my heart I wish that you could be with me I wish you heal my endless pain And take me away from all my fears
But I’m trapped here in my world of doubts I’m not free to follow you I know you would give everything you’ve got And you would handle me with care
I could never forget the moment When you looked into my eyes When I touched your skin for the first time I felt heaven in my hands
So I try to close my eyes And I’m dreaming me away In my dreams you hold me tight In my dreams your always near
I never want to wake up again Don’t want to face reality Your so far away from me But you will always be in my dreams”
A tear started to form from his eye. He brushed the tear away as he gave out a soft snort. He put the piece of vellum away as he continued to keep the fire going.

The night was quiet as the group slept.. or watched the fire as the two latest additions were prone to. Jialing herself was a heavy sleeping, not stirring for anything as she slept, her arms curled around her head, her back pressed against Reed's. Jin eventually joined the couple in the early morning, snoozing in the crook of Jialing's legs, his head on her knee. The dog didn't tend to stay in one place all night. No he'd get up, move, sleep.. get up.. move.. sleep. All night long and with the two men who weren't sleeping like the others, the shaggy dog was even more off schedule.
The sun eventually rose bringing with it the morning chill as mists rose from the forest, dewdrops forming on leaves. Normally, Jialing was apt to sleep right on through sunrise and a good few hours in, all curled up in her warm bag, with Jin at her side until Reed shook her awake. But today.. Mother Nature was going to play a cruel game. The night had been cool.. and as the sun warmed the earth, drops of water gathered on leaves, on blades of grass, on twigs. One such drop of water, perched feet above Jialing's head, was forming. Sparkling in the warm, soft yellow sunlight, it grew in size as smaller drops ran down the leaf's veins to join it. First one, then another.. then a third. A happy little dew drop trembled. Finally it grew too big for the leaf's tip to hold it and the dewdrop dove off, tumbling through the air as gravity called.
She woke up a start, bolting straight up with wide eyes and a long fingered hand quickly seeking her right eye. The dewdrop had landed squarely in the corner of her eyes, waking her out of a deep, morning's sleep. Jialing rubbed her eye, mouth agape as she.. tried to comprehend the bright and warm greens, yellows, olive, lime, russet, mahogany, umber colors all around her. Was she the first awake?

The morning dew and sun was a warming welcome for Tseng Wei. The patches of fog in the distance were serene and tranquil for him to see. The fire was nothing more than embers now and the haunch was nothing more than a bare femur bone. Tseng Wei looked at the wound that was placed by Azula on his shoulder. It didn’t make much progress in healing since last night. It was at least scabbed over a little to prevent the bleeding at least.
The rustling of the others caught Tseng’s curiosity. The first one besides himself to be getting up was the girl named Jialing. She was rubbing her eye and yawning as she awoke. All he could do is watch her get up with a blank look in his eyes.
“Good morning,” Tseng welcomed, “I hope you slept well enough last night. It was a little damp and chilly last night.”
He poked at what was left of the fire and plumes of tiny embers drift into the air.
Gengoro was asleep near his backpack with his sword at his side, just in case there was an ambush or a cry for help where he knew where the weapon was at all times and nearby if the time comes for it’s use. He was stirring a little in his sleep, but nothing that involved much movement.
The morning song birds chirped in the distance where the tree line was. Even with Azula’s attack, it still didn’t prevent these beautiful specimen of birds to leave.
“They’re such a nice addition to the morning,” Tseng said as soft a he could to Jialing without waking the others.

The moment his voice reached her, she stopped rubbing. In silence, she turned to look over her shoulder, mouth still hanging open like a cow hippo. Her one eyebrow arched, questioning, her fist still over her other eye. Eh? Are you talking to me Mr. Creepy Blood Sucker? Her mind asked what she currently did not have the balls to say. After a moment, she rolled her eyes skyward and snapped her jaw shut. With all the grace of a pageant winner her fist fell from her face to thud next to her supporting hand on the thick blankets. "..." She said nothing immediately, looking at him with nothing but confused contempt this morning. When he spoke about the chirping birds, she glanced to the canopy of leaves, one corner of her lips curling up in a disapproving sneer. Yeah.. Chirping birds were nice but not this early. God, it was morning like this, when she was so sore that she just wished she was back in her bed in Lochan with a pillow to bury her face in.
She glanced to the side, where Reed was sprawled out under his blanket, his long stringy hair across his face. For a brief moment, the pleasurable idea of kicking him crossed her mind, her lips stretching into a mischievous grin before glancing up at the tattooed stranger, over her shoulder once more with her crimped hair hanging in her face. "Eh..." And a shrug of her shoulders was all the answer he would get this early.

Tsuya’s eyes suddenly snapped open as she lay on her side, arms wrapped around her chest. She hadn’t even realized she had fallen asleep last night. Trying to prolong the amount of rest she might get Tsuya remained horizontal, rubbing her hands together in an attempt to warm them. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for her to feel so cold in the morning though the lack of blankets hadn’t helped. At home she would pile on covers at night for being near the water made the islands evenings brisk. Realizing others were up the young warrior sat up and pulled her gloves on and tucked her hands under her arms.
“Almost like yesterday didn’t happen.” Tsuya reflected. Their surroundings were almost peaceful, with the dew undisturbed around them and the birds adding their songs to the day. Trees still held their scorch marks and there was still the hint of smoke in the air, so it could not all be forgotten. Running her hands down her hair she loosened the band and smoothed the long strands into place before tying them again as best she could in the middle. The dull brown hair still felt fairly clean for which she was grateful and Tsuya remembered how badly she wished she could take a proper bath. That dream would have to wait for a more appropriate time, however. Oh, if only her mother could see her now.
“How’s that arm of yours?” Tsuya asked the man who had acted so strange the previous night. He seemed to regard it with care which was understandable. At least it didn’t look infected.

Tseng Wei started to move the arm around a little bit more. It would’ve healed better if not for that fiasco that happened last night with the book and the wolf-bat that he killed off. The scabs are still fresh, but the pain subsided a little.
“It’s doing better,” Tseng said, “If not for last night, it would’ve healed more.”
A rustling came from Gengoro’s area as Jin was trying to see if anymore bits of the wolf-bat could be found. The bone was the only thing present, but the scent of the meat was still lingering to the giant dog’s nose. He whimpered with knowing that the meat is gone, but took the wolf-bat femur anyways and started to chew on it like it was a toy.
Gengoro stirred a little before waking up. His eyes were blurry from only two hours of sleep the entire night. The conditions didn’t allow him to sleep well, so most of fire guard was his.
“I take it you didn’t much sleep last night?” Tseng asked.
“Gee, was it the grumpy disposition or my baggy eyes that gave that away?” Gengoro hissed with sarcasm. Seeing the dg chew on the bone of what was left of the femur, he looked around and only see Tseng Wei and Tsuya coming to.
“So I see you’ve helped youself?” Gengoro said to the dog. Jin paid no attention as he continued to chew the calcium enriched bone.

Tsuya rose up near her after a moment, breaking the uncomfortable silence between the rough haired Jialing and the dark skinned tattoed Tseng Wei. She glanced towards her, out of the corner of her eye mostly as her lips parted in the general lack of any expression. Tsuya looked different without her makeup.. less intimidating, more human. well.. that was the whole point of the makeup Her mind reminded her. She pursed her lips after a moment, puckering them to the side as her eyes darted the opposite direction in thought.
Her mind wanted to get up, but her body was protesting. The morning was cold, her blankets and Reed's back were warm. She shifted her feet, getting a look of displeasure from Jin who was never one to stay lying down once disturbed. The dog who had been sleeping with his massive head on Jialing's calves and knees rose to his feet to schlep somewhere. That somewhere was exactly where the remains of Tseng's dinner were the night before. Hissing under her breath, Jialing accused the dog of being a traitor before she too rose in her crumpled, wrinkled clothing. Her arms flew above her hand, fingers grasping at her wrist as she stretched her spine, rising up on her toes as she did so. She arched to the side before swiftly collapsing her posture, her heels slamming onto the ground as she rocked forward, stumbling off her futon mat.
She put her hands on her hips after a moment, righting her now red face, her head still spinning a bit from the momentary blackout. She glanced towards the rough, grungy looking man who had also just woken up. He seemed to have an even harder time waking up than she did. His fault for thinkin' we need a fire watch .. Never in all her travels with Reed had either of them stayed up to watch the fire. Nobody and nothing bothered them ever before. She scoffed a bit, a low chuckle in her throat before she turned and kneeled down and began to roll her futon up. "We need to get moving if we want to reach the next town.."

He never really expected it. The Kyoshi Warrior was asking Tseng how he was doing? That was a change of attitude from the people around here. At this time, Gengoro rose to his feet, doing his daily “cracking” of his neck, back, and fingers. Like popcorn over an open fire, he continued to crack until it was assured that he was loose enough to do stuff. He looked down at Tseng, who was talking to Tsuya.
“Grab your stuff Tseng,” Gengoro said, “We will be leaving soon.”
Gengoro grabbed his miao dao and placed it in his sash and his backpack on his back. He looked around with Jialing, Tseng, and Tsuya were awake while the one called Reed and the little boy were still dozing. Tseng fortunately didn’t have a lot of stuff to bring with him, just a staff and a book bag over his bag. He watched the dog Jin nearby the group chewing on the bone that Tseng brought to the group as meat and seems to be content with chewing on it the rest of the trip. Gengoro just shrugged it off as something a dog would normally do and focused on the task at hand.
“Alright master, Tseng said, “I am ready to go.”
Gengoro looked over at Jialing, who he believe didn’t get any trust from her.
“So where are we heading to?” Gengoro asked Jialing.
Gengoro and Tseng Wei have left the thread[/u]

Stretching her right leg out and folding the left in so her foot was pressed against her thigh, Tsuya leaned forward with her arms extended before switching legs and repeating the process. Her cold muscles began to loosen up with the exercise and her head began to clear out the morning’s fogginess. “Yeah, the sooner we get moving again the better.” The longer they kept traveling the better her chances were of finding the rest of her group; or at least some information in the next town. Kneeling on the dirt Tsuya mimicked Jialing in how she rolled the futon and tied it closed. With a quick glance around their little camp she realized they did not have much to take care of. Standing fully the young warrior enjoyed another long stretch of her arms over her head. Morning warm-ups and drills had always been a morning routine of hers and it was satisfying to find some normalcy in the actions.
Tsuya couldn’t remember exactly how far the village with the Rebellion outpost Jialing had mentioned was, or its name, so she didn’t even look up when the older man spoke. It made her wish she had invested in a small map of the Earth Kingdom before leaving home. Something she might want to consider looking into in the future, but for now her course needed to be guided by another. Dark hazel eyes wandered over to the other girl as Tsuya tried to ignore the taste of mud in her mouth.

Ribbons of leather were pulled tight over the rolled up futon, blanket and mat. Reed had woke up beside her, stumbling out of his futon enough for Jia to yoink it towards her. She began to roll it up quickly with skilled hands, kneeling and using her knees to bolster the roll against it. More ribbons of leather were pulled over it, tied into sailor's knots, something Reed had taught her, so that they would not come undone.
“So where are we heading to?”
Paused for a moment, she pressed her dry lips together and turned her head a bit towards her left shoulder. Looking away, and simply staring at the grass, moss and dirt mixture of the ground, she simply didn't know. Her right knee kicked up, bare foot planting onto the ground. She hefted both futon rolls, hanging from her lean and skinny arms as she sighed.. a tad ticked annoyed this early in the morning. Spirits this would be easier if they had an ostrich horse..
"Hell if I know."
Jialing turned and walked towards the tall maple tree where her boots, with their rabbit fur interiors, and the old harness her brothers had jury rigged into something for her to wear. Metal hooks and snaps secured her futon to it, allowing her to sit down and wiggle into the harness. Reed had something similar to carry his own futon, but he was still sitting on the ground, rubbing his eyes. Lazy bum She pulled her boots towards her, tugging at the laces on one rhythmically to loosen them up before stuffing her foot in and tucking her short pant legs in as she re tightened the laces up her shins.
She leaned back, with her legs stretched out in front of her, the weight of the futon roll pulling her back with her palms set into the ground, starring at her feet. She tilted them to one side, then to the next for a few moments. Alright.. let's hit the road..
