Xia Feng happily followed Mesheiko and the old man. Mesheiko seemed to be grinning to himself and was fingering the stubble on his chin. Xia Feng realized then how young Mesheiko must actually be. Poor boy, alone in the wilderness with no one to care for him. Not that he couldn't care for himself, but to have someone care for him is less lonely.
But Xia Feng shook her head. She needed to get to this town in order to send word to her husband.
Yet whenever she thought of him, a prickling sensation in her neck followed. What happened to her Jing?
Looking back up at Mesheiko, she, too, saw puff of gray smoke caressing the clouds. No.... not again. She couldn't do it again. She stopped dead in her tracks, emerald eyes wide and teary with fear.

Midori nearly bumped into Xia Feng; she had stopped. Confused, Midori walked beside her and tried to follow her stare. Her eyes were wide, so it wasn't hard. Looking, she saw Mesheiko, who had recently been cheery, but now sort of grim. What was going on?
Then she saw it rising above the trees, smoke. Not good. Not good at all. But then again, who said it had to be a Fire Nation attack? Sure it was likely, but it wasn't always the case, right? Still, her smile was less convincing, her eyes slightly downcast.
"That doesn't have to be the Fire Nation." She managed. Amazingly her voice seemed to stay fairly confident. "It could be something else..."

Siyuki smiled weakly at Midori, who seemed rather confident. But Siyuki wasn't so sure. It seemed rather likely for the Fire Nation to be around here.
Not again, she thought, giving a sigh towards the smoke, please spirits, not again.....
She'd seen smoke like that before. Smoke that was burning something, not ordinary campfire smoke....
She stood next to the others, she was becoming nervous. What if they ran into them? Could they hold them off? She didn't know, but it didn't seem likely. She took a deep breath.
"It could be something else," Siyuki said, trying to be calm, but her voice was trembling a little, "But still, it's not a good idea to stay in one spot with smoke like that....."

Xia Feng didn't know what to do. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, waiting for Mesheiko's reaction.
Terror fell upon her as pain gripped her belly once more. She doubled over, a low groan emitting within her chest. It was deffinately time. Panting, she softly wispered her husband's name, praying he would be able to she his child. She felt as though she was being ripped appart from the inside out. Screaming was all she could do to even try to convey her pain, and the sound came narturally. She sat all the way on the ground, knowing she would probably not move from that spot for a while.
Why did this have to come now, with the Fire Nation probably not far away? She didn't want anything to happen to her baby, and she was willing to die -- and kill -- for that.

"GAH!" Ishi ducked as another fireball dove from behind. He and Lin had been travelling for days without running into any more trouble. In fact, the passing days had been quite boring. Ishi was hoping for a change from the mundane days he had been experiencing, but he never asked for any firebenders.
They had been scouting for Ishi and Lin apparently, coming from that other squad of Fire nation soldiers they had come into contact with days ago. Luckily, there were only two of them.
Ishi leapt up the branch of a small tree and reached out his hand to Lin. "Come on!" he begged, "Get up here quick!" But it was too little and to late to hide. One of the firebenders rushed out of the thicket blasting two spurts of fire. Ishi jumped from the tree to the ground again. One of the blasts hit the tree and it caught fire. The fire spread to the tree's peak as quick as lightning.
Ishi and Lin began running again. He darted around the corner of an underbrush and motioned for Lin to join him. Concentrating, he bent the Earth around them to make their hiding place seem to be a simple rock. It worked! The firebenders ran right past them. In the distance, a shrill cry sounded. The noise seemed to be racked with pain. The firebender's foot steps came closer and stopped.
"What was that?" one said. "It came from over in that clearing." the other asnwered.
Oh no. Ishi thought in shame, Other people are going to be put into danger because of us... "Stay here." he told Lin. "Please..." and he ran off toward the direction that the firebenders fled. He didn't expect Lin to listen, but it was all he could hope for.
Coming out into the clearing, Ishi observed a woman laying on the floor with others crouched around her, looking worried. Not one second later, the firebenders leapt into the clearing as well. The woman's company was soon on their feet, looking ready and willing to defend. Ishi jumped out and started flowing through the Earthbending form for mountain creating. He strained his concentration and summoned up a rather large hill beneath the firebenders. He then lifted a nearby boulder and swept it toward the firebenders, knocking them out cold.
All that bending stressed Ishi's body, he collapsed to his knees and looked up towards the party of people, "Sorry..." he said weakly.

Midori's eyes were so open that if she strained them more for any reason, she was perfectly confident they would pop out. First there was Xia Feng. Things weren't looking too hot and Midori had a pretty good idea why.
She went over to her, slid to the ground and tried to soothe her by laying a few comforting hands on her hair, but she didn't know if she was making any headway in how she was feeling. She tried to utter a few comforting words, but it came out as a long string of babble which might have been better mistaken as a grunt of a wildanimal, more then a friend. Midori wasn't even sure she could be heard over the shriek that was slipping from Xia Feng, anyway. She simply looked up to the others in fear, asking them in her eyes what to do next. She just thanked spirits the doctor was there.
Yet, there was no end to the day's excitement. Firebenders came. Perfect. Midori just sat and watched in complete shock and frustration. She would stay with Xia Feng. She didn't feel in the mood for fighting, but if they came this close, she'd give them a good punch in the jaw. However, they didn't stick around long. A man came and bended them out. It obviously took much of his strength, for he fell. And then... apologized? He just saved them. If anything they should be apologizing to him.
Midori wanted to go over to help him (she hoped her eyes told him so), but she didn't want to leave Xia Feng. Her eyes found the others and tried to say what everyone was probably thinking.
"What now?"

"No way is he leaving me here..." Lin said a little irritated.
I knew you weren't going to listen to him...
I get worked up over things I'm put out of, just because of how old I am. I don't care what happens as long as I find out what the heck is going on!
Fine, but you're only risking your life here...
Lin ran in where he went.
Well, I'll only get myself killed doing this, but I'm not going back out there alone... She thought. She ran faster in the same direction.

A scream racked with pain that seemed worse than any torture rang into Mesheiko's ears. And much worse than any of Banshee's screeches. Banshee himself kicked and stomped, though Mesheiko believed the cause Xia Feng's scream. But no; fire streamed in all different directions. A boy, looking around his own age, knocked the Firebenders out. Hmm..Earthbender as well. Good to know., Mesheiko thought. Some good and impressive bending, but who was this? Mesheiko looked around, eyes darting, confused as ever. Here was Xia Feng, going into labor, and two other unknown teenagers, and topping it all off, Firebenders(unconscious though they be).
No, it wasn't all. Banshee was throwing a fit as though criminals worse than any others were on his heels. Then again, the war emus were trained to detect sounds fast and first. Maybe there was more to this than realized. He made the desicion not to dismount, and felt for the necklace that banged against his chest, under the shirt. Mesheiko had to be strong through this.
I thought I was an ex-soldier, which would mean I wouldn't get all that action and blood. Guess not., Mesheiko thought, pointing a finger at the teenage boy who had seemed to be the cause and resolution for the Firebenders. "Alright, thanks for the help, but who are you and what's your business?", Mesheiko said, glancing over at Xia Feng once more. He wished he could do more to help her, but couldn't. He knew nothing about birthing. Mesheiko closed his eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, and tried to relax. His eyes traveled back to the other boy's, trying to say he was friendly to others like himself.

Siyuki sighed with relief. The firebenders were out, or at least, for the moment.
The boy had just saved them. Where he came from was an uncertainty, though, and it still made Siyuki cautious. Even if he had just saved their lives, he was still a stranger, and they were still in the middle of the forest, with a pregnant woman ready to give birth.
Poor Xia Feng, she looked as though she was in so much pain. The doctor was getting closer to the woman, and so was Midori. Was she to deliver, right there? But delivery's could take so long, her mother had been in labor with her brother for a few hours.....
'What now?' was a good question. They were a group of people, one in labor, one weak from a powerful attack, and surrounded by firebenders, who could wake up any second.
"Well," she said, looking unsurely at everyone, "I guess we have no choice but to stay, unless......"
She thought about it. Maybe...
"Maybe we can get help, from the roads. There are always merchants travelling around here, and maybe they can give us a ride......"
It was a stretch, but it was worth a try.

Ishi looked up with eyes still dazed and the image of the surrounding people was still blurry. One of them asked who he was and what he was doing here.
"Long story short," he began, still breathing heavily in between every few words, "me and my friend here," he pointed to Lin, "encountered Fire Nation soldiers and ran. They must have sent scouters to follow our trail."
His vision began o come back, though he was still physicaly weakened.
"My name is Ishi Toku, from Omashu."
The woman that was still groaning and fussing on the ground was apparently in labor. One of the company suggested finding travelers on the road to help them.
"I know these forests well." Ishi told them, trying to overcome buckeling knees to stand, "I can find the perfect trail. It's the most famous route taken by the professional merchants and traders." He stood for about two second and then fell back to his knees as he tried to step. "Please let me help. It's the least I can do for bringing you more trouble." he lowered his eyes meekly.

Lin stopped running immediately once she arrived there.
"Well, techincally they found me first by accident, so then I ran. They knocked me out, and the rest is a little bit of a blur." She said, breathing for air.
See? I told you this is why I sometimes don't listen...
Your point is...?
I have no idea... but I still won't mention the 'voices' I hear in my head, or else they'll all think I'm some crazy kid with mental problems or something... She thought.
"Wait, exactly what happened here? I was only running and hearing what was going on." She said.

Midori stood up to get a better grasp on what was happening. Xia Feng's in labor; two people ran away from Fire Nation soldiers; the soldiers found us, but the man saved us... Her head spun. Why must everything happen so fast?
Glancing over to the man, she saw he was about her age. If he was willing to help them that was great; they needed it. However, if he was to help them someone needed to help him first. Midori motioned for the doctor to come over. He hubbled over with his cane and istantly started checking Xia Feng and whispering into her ear. Midori smiled weakly before dashing over Ishi Toku. She grabbed his arm in an attempt to help him up. While doing so she tried to address the girl's, or Lin's, question.
"Well you see, we just happened to all be wondering at the same time in the forest and bump into each other. Xia Feng over there," She jerked her head to her. "escaped from a Fire Nation attack on her village. I'm delivering a letter, and Siyuki was meditating. Mesheiko was travelling and he found a doctor for us." She motioned to each person with their name "... and well... ultamitely we're trying to help Xia Feng." She turned the Ishi again.
"Please, help us." Midori started gently. "But let's help you first. Can you stand?"

Lin looked at Xia Feng, then back at Ishi.
"Still confused, but okay." She said.
Do you even have a brain to understand what's going on?
Yes, if it wasn't for my brain, you wouldn't exist!
Good point, but right now to put it in simpler words, that person over there, Xia Feng, is pregnant and is about to give birth. They were attacked, and Ishi defended them, but it took out some energy.
What are you? My common sense or something?
Maybe...
Ugh, forget it... She thought. She had her head downward while 'speaking' to the voices in her head.

"Oh, I'll be fine. Just gimme a sec." he stood again, this time only wavering a little bit. "Whew! That's a lot of Earthbending, but I'm tough." he said, stretching his arms and arching his back. "Nice to meet you all, I just wish it could've been....under less stressful circumstances." he grinned weakly.
He looked up to the girl who had helped him up. She was a decent size taller than him, as most people were. "And what's your name miss? No, wait, hold off on that. We've gotta get help quick.
"Anyone who wants to follow may do so, we should be back shortly." he said, darting off into the brush again.

Xia Feng only had a faint idea of what was going on. Some one new arrived, then Firebenders, but then the Firebenders were gone.... It was one big blur. Xia Feng lay down, the pain slightly easing up. It was deffinately time, no mistaking it.
How way she going to make it through this? She wasn't very big; how could she give birth to a baby with little her?
Well, either way, it was coming weather she liked it or not.
She reached out a hand to the nearest person, asking for water. It was suprising how fast her mouth got dry. Panting, she begged for it again, closing her eyes. She had no idea what to do. She had seen a birth right before she had gotten married to Jing. Her mother had asked the midwife to give her a taste of what being married ment, and what giving birth was.
It was a night Xia Feng would never forget. The woman was in so much pain... but afterwards, she was so happy. Right now, Xia Feng couldn't imagine the pain going away and the happiness beginning.
