The family had gotten up considerably earlier than normal today, it seemed like their small world was falling apart. Hotaru slept in her room not yet rising from sleep, her body curled up between layers of fur snoozing comfortably. Dreams of icy fields, laughing friends and snack cakes danced through her mind, it seemed all too nice to be real but in a dream you never doubted the events of such dreams. Nothing was ruining her peaceful slumber, she didn't know what was being discussed only feet away in the conjoined home that her father and uncle shared, well had shared anyway. Meanwhile her aunt and uncle stood in the kitchen talking with a sailor quietly.
Mica's hand found her husbands and her knuckles went white as she clutched him tightly, wanting to provide some sort of support. Her other hand held the couple's babe against her shoulder, only a weeks old at this point. Kaden forced a stone like expression, he forced doubt into his mind, he didn't want to believe that his sister and brother in law had been killed. He couldn't, not with an infant and a new family. " Are you sure it can't be anyone else....? A lot of boats could be floating around out there."
The sailor simply shook his head expressing his condolences, Hotaru's mother's engagement necklace was placed on the table and the man dripped his head in respect of the family.Kaden looked at the pendant, that his brother in law had carved for his sister.. this was too, too real, it was too much of a shock, of course he recognized the blue stone, but he didn't want to think of it as hers, she'd come back for it. His older sister would come home... right?
" We towed the vessel in, it's mostly burned, there are some bon-"
" Thank you I've heard enough..." Kaden whispered hurriedly, if the necklace was acquired there had to be a neck it came off of, he didn't want Mica to hear about the gory details. His wife looked at him, pale and rigid, this was a tough blow, the basic understanding was that fire nation had attacked the ship, they were all over the northern seas, a trading ship who happened to cross their paths... they would be no match.
Sleepily Hotaru sat up, yawning and rubbing her eyes, it was dark in her room, a slight bit of light came through the thick hide hanging in the door way. As her tiny fists pulled away from the hazy sleep filled eyes she got out of the confines of her bed tugging on her parka and running her hands through her wild hair, taming the locks. Usually the kitchen smelled of cooking food by now, there would be crying from Kyuso, chatter from either her aunt or uncle, but it seemed quiet today. As she made her way out into the cooking room she was confused, who was the stranger? She'd never seen that man before, it made her nervous.
" I still can't believe their dead.... what are we going to tell Hotaru"
" Tell me what.....?"
All eyes in the room landed on the small voice, Kaden looked at his niece, a little girl he'd known since she was an infant, he had nothing to say to her, he couldn't think of a single thing to say that would make this all right.
" Tell me what" Hotaru repeated more worried now, she didn't land on the final answer right away. " Mom and Dad aren't coming back... are they" Her eyes widened and she backed away from the group of people. Now Kyuso began to cry, fussing in his mothers arms. Kaden looked away from Hotaru to the infant and his wife trying to settle the little boy down. Hotaru's heart clenched tightly, her parents were dead, and the two of them were more worried about the damn baby then they were worried about her. Hot tears traveled down her cheeks, her hands clenched tightly teeth ground together, her world was coming to an abrupt stop. The sailor watched the family hesitantly, something was amiss. like the calm before the storm. The baby was only just calming down and Kaden sighed, it seemed the worst was over, there would be a lot of crying over the next couple of days but things would heal.
Hotaru wasn't feeling the same way...Tossing her arms to her sides Hotaru screamed fire consuming a large circle around her, there was too much running through her mind, hurt, loss, grief, anger, rage.... All the eyes in the room returned to Hotaru, then they shifted behind her as the flames around her died. Hotaru looked up nervously, dread swallowing her whole, what had she done. Then her eyes followed everyone else's behind her..... where a wall hanging had caught fire, Mica moved to the far side of the room, her expression frantic, scared, what was happening. Kaden hesitated for a moment and he shifted part of the wall into water sending it at the fire.
Hotaru bolted for the door in the mean time. her eyes clouded with tears she couldn't be here anymore. Blindly she staggered through the streets, it felt like the world was ending, she wanted to fall into the water and freeze, it'd be better than living to face the consiquences of her new life alone, her secret revealed in front of a complete stranger and her family, she was a freak.
