Hebirei stood next to the Spirit Pond, looking down at the two sacred Koi fish and their eternal dance which kept the Northern Water Tribe safe. He could smell flowers that were so rare to find in a tundra this penetrating. It was only his 3rd time here that he could remember. The other two were long ago, too, so long that he couldn't even remember why he went. His palms were sweaty and he was almost shaking. He was to be married today. Hebirei looked down at his formal clothes that his mother had slaved over until they had looked perfect. They were very uncomfortable, but it was tradition.
He thought back to the betrothal necklace that he had made for Haukea. It wasn't anything special, but he had put his heart into it. He figured that he would see it for the rest of his life, so he might as well put his best effort into it. There was some commotion as his soon-to-be bride emerged from the gate into the Spirit Oasis, but then, all was silent. She really did look beautiful, wearing a dress that made a lovely collage of blues and whites, too many to name. Haukea walked along the path to where Hebirei was standing, along with her father, clad in formal clothes as well. Along Haukea's neckline, a small bit of whale-ivory could be seen, displaying the symbol of the Water Tribe.
Hebirei swallowed loudly and tried to calm himself. After all, he had mentally prepared himself for this moment, but it was so much more impacting when it was actually happening. He struggled to regain his composure before the two had reached him. Just as Haukea and her father had almost reached the end of the path, where Hebirei and the Chief were standing, Hebirei heard a familiar voice, and instantly became alert. "HEBIREI~!!" No way. It couldn't be. But, sure enough, just above Haukea's head, a ways away, he recognized the face of his nineteen year old brother, Nu-Doru. The very same brother who had left the family high and dry just a year earlier. He sounded as though he had been drinking...
"Whoo! You do NOT know how hard it is to get around this place after a siege! It took me forever to find you in all this mess! How can you go and get engaged and not invite your older brother?!" At this, Hebirei's obviously inebriated brother chose to march at a brisk pace toward Hebirei, going right down the center aisle, knocking Haukea and her father right into the Spirit Pond. Hebirei was too stunned to do anything, but some guests had waterbent the two out of the pond quickly, so as not to disturb the Koi fish. The expression on Haukea's face was one of pure shock and sorrow, she was soaked, along with her father as well. She merely put her face into her hands and wept.
Meanwhile, Nu-Doru was still on direct course for Hebirei. Before Nu-Doru had a chance to say anything, Hebirei found his tongue, "What do you think you're doing?! You just pushed my fiance into the pond!!" At this, he motioned to a very soggy looking Haukea, sitting on the ground, being dried off by her brothers. Nu-Doru threw a quick glance at her and returned his attention to Hebirei, "Her? Psh. Even you could do better than that hollow-headed ditz." Hebirei felt the familiar anger welling in the pit of his stomach, and let it loose in one hard punch to the face, sending Nu-Doru staggering back a few feet. At this, Kouza and Hayashi pulled Nu-Doru away from a very enraged Hebirei.
As Kaimana was drying Haukea off, he noticed that her betrothal necklace was gone. Standing up, he looked into the Spirit Pond, and saw the glimmer of the necklace embedded in the shallows. As he picked it out of the sand, he did a lot of thinking. First of all, her betrothal necklace had fallen off in sacred water, that could not be a good sign. Second, this kind of thing could not just be forgiven and brushed away under the rug. Third, there was no way the Harta brothers would ever accept that Nu-Doru after this. Gripping the cloth in his hands, a soggy Kaimana stood in front of the guests, and proclaimed, "Due to this great disrespect, the wedding is hereby called off." He then dropped the necklace on the ground, walked over to Haukea, grabbed her by the hand, and led her out of the place.
Slowly but surely, guests filtered out of the Spirit Oasis, looking confused and disappointed, until there was only Hebirei left. Nu-Doru had to be dragged out by two warriors due to the fact that he was getting violent. Hebirei felt strange, sad, and yet, there was an emotion that he couldn't pinpoint. He took small, quiet steps over to the necklace on the ground and looked down upon it. He let a few tears drop onto the necklace before picking it up and putting it in his pocket. This was the final straw, he had to get away from this tribe's traditions and customs, and overall, it's people. He had to, no... would find a way to get out of here.
