Midori’s attention was only delayed slightly from the ostrich horse as Cheng let loose a smooth remark. She smiled gently as she let her gaze rest on the soldier, and her eyes were bright and sparkling as she let her eyelashes bat in an expression overly kind and innocent. Her elbow casually rested on the stable door, and the young woman softly placed her chin on the back of her palm.
“Why, I’m not quite sure what you mean, Cheng.” Midori murmured, her voice soft and overly innocent. “I think I have quite a sweet temperament.” She flashed him a full on smile, showing off all her teeth, before turning her back to him and confronting the ostrich horse once again. “I’m sure Banshee agrees with me.”
Tilting her head at the scared creature in the stable, Midori let a tiny sigh escape her lips. It was such a terrible shame the whole mess had taken place and so soon, with effects so grim. Mesheiko pressed down into the fears and pain of the infirmary, and the proud, stubborn Banshee brought down to scared, hesitant movements and mentality.
Slowly, Midori brought her hand into the stable, letting it rest motionless in midair. Hopefully, in a bit of time, Banshee would come to it, and she could give what little comfort she could offer. But, in the meantime, she got bored.
“When do you think I could go back in there?” Midori asked, turning her head to glance at Cheng, her expression etched with concern again.

Cheng rolled his at eyes at her and said, "Of course. You just keep thinking that." Banshee, meanwhile, looked nervously between Midori's hand and Cheng. "Aw, he's just been a little jittery since the battle. It was pretty rough, and Mesheiko and Banshee got right in the heart." Cheng said, his eyes looking with pity at the frightened animal. "He'll warm up soon, I'm sure," Cheng said, and he too stuck his hand into the stall. Banshee let out a terribly loud squawk and kicked at the wall behind him, almost trying to find if he could back up any farther.
Cheng once again rolled his eyes. "Thanks, Banshee, I love you too." he said sarcastically. He withdrew his hand from the stall, and resumed his leaning position. "We can go in a second. Say good-bye to Banshee." Meanwhile, the usual shuffle of feet and hooves was heard throughout the stables, but one set in particular was moving down the row of stalls. As an ostrich-horse was being led through the row, Cheng approached the pair in a way subtle enough not to startle the animal but let the human know he needed to talk. An idea had occured to him.
"Hey, Tuan, buddy. Can I borrow Yen for a bit? You go on, I'll put her back." The soldier leading the ostrich-horse most willingly handed Cheng the reins and walked off. "Midori, this is Yen, one of the best female ostrich-horses we've got. I figure if anyone can coax Banshee out of this slump, she can." Yen approached the stall and curiously stuck her head in, sniffing at the air, and poked her head farther in. Banshee at first looked warily at the newcomer, backing himself into a corner, but then he took a good whiff of the air and then realized who was standing at his door.
He worked toward them, putting one foot cautiously in front of the other, and his eyes never left the trio ahead. Banshee hardly even looked at Midori's outstreched hand, but instead hesitantly nudged Yen with his beak. Yen snorted, but still she nudged Banshee back and put her beak to his long neck, sniffing curiously. She withdrew, but it was obvious the two ostrich-horses had made a connection. Cheng grinned. "I think we have a match!"
"Anyway, though, I'm sure Mesheiko's examination is over. We'd better get going. Let me just go put Yen away." Cheng said, and the ostrich-horse followed him, though rather reluctantly. Another soldier passed by and Cheng called out, "Minh, buddy, care to put Yen away for me?" The soldier rolled his eyes but agreed, and led Yen away, but she struggled all the way.
Cheng exited the stables. "See, now, Banshee'll be fine. I'm sure Mesheiko's fine too, but if not, we can just do what we did with Banshee. You can be Yen." Cheng joked.

Midori simply rolled her eyes in reply as she followed Cheng out of the stables. What was with him? It seemed like he couldn’t go two minutes without making some kind of crack involving Mesheiko and her as a “couple.” It was getting old very quickly. But she didn’t linger on that thought for long; the short, but unbelievably sweet encounter between the two ostrich-horses was still fresh in her mind, and she didn’t wish to let go of the warm and cheerful feeling that it had placed inside of her. Especially since she was heading back to the infirmary – the place that was sure to throw a bucket of shockingly, ice cold water on the content warmth she had just gathered.
Don’t think negatively. Midori told herself silently. Cheng’s right. Mesheiko will be fine. Nothing’s happened that can’t be gotten over. Still, as the infirmary grew closer, Midori took a deep breath, trying to calm the anxious rhythm that was beating forcefully in her chest.
When the two reached the infirmary doors, Midori continued to walk through the rooms in complete silence, her head dipped towards the ground. She did not care to look at any of the patients any more than she did the first time she entered. The only time she lifted her gaze was when she was sure she was getting near to Mesheiko’s cot.
Midori quickly spotted him, along with Hung Yong. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of their expressions; at least Hung Yong seemed unruffled. This reassured her and terrified her at the same time. Surely if it was something dreadful it would be obvious. But if there was great news to tell, wouldn’t it be obvious to?
Midori approached the others slowly, her smile shy as she tried to think up something appropriate to say. “How are we feeling?” she asked at last, her gaze falling on Mesheiko.

Mesheiko's eyes quickly turned from Hung Yong and his ears from the pep talk to Midori and her question. How was he supposed to answer that? It felt like a trick question. He didn't want to upset her, but he still felt like a mess. Mesheiko knew it wasn't going to heal overnight, though that would be rather nice. Yet, he was alive. That was a plus that many lifeless soldiers who had made their sacrifices did not have.
Hung Yong seemed to always know what to say. "He'll be alright." Hung Yong answered. He handed the diagnosis Dr. Bao had given them to her. Cheng followed closely behind Midori, and as soon as he reached the cot, he had no problem voicing himself. "So, Hung Yong, you mean they're not going to saw his foot off?" Hung Yong chuckled. "Yes, Cheng. Mesheiko's foot stays attached." Hung Yong assured. "Let's go celebrate!" Cheng exclaimed. Mesheiko raised an eyebrow at his tentmate amusedly. Cheng then grinned sheepishly. "Right. I'll go celebrate for you." Cheng said, and walked off into the infirmary. He, of course, managed to find a large group of the younger nurses and stuck with them.
Hung Yong shook his head in amusement. Then, a certain question sprang to Mesheiko's mind that really hadn't occured before. How would this affect his bending? Of course, he still had two hands and one mobile leg, but certainly a paralyzed foot would hinder Earthbending quite a bit. Mesheiko didn't particularly want to ask in front of Midori, but he had to know. Oh, of course she could handle it, but it was still awkward all the same. "Um, Hung Yong, what will happen to my bending after this?" Mesheiko questioned.
Hung Yong sighed. He had been expecting this question. "Mesheiko, there's no telling. I should think you'll still be able to bend, but it most certainly will be hard for you." Hung Yong said solemnly. He then chuckled. "Don't worry too much about that now, though, both of you. I'd just focus of walking right now."

Midori quickly read over the document Hung Yong had given her. Her heart’s frantic beating had calmed somewhat from the older soldier’s reassurance, but she was still a bit nervous nonetheless. She paused for a moment after she had completed her scan of the diagnosis, and her gaze did not move from the paper. After a few moments, Midori read over the words a second time, now focusing on each and every sentence. She then glanced up to Hung Yong, her lips hinting the smallest trace of a smile.
Mesheiko’s going to be alright. Midori thought with relief. So what if his foot is a bit impaired? He’s going to be fine. And that’s all that really mattered to Midori at the moment.
With the burden of uncertainty lifted off of her, and with the confirmation of good news, Midori felt instantly perky and optimistic. This battle was won! She felt like any other conflict could be won as well. “You’re going to be able to walk fine, Mesheiko. I know you are.” She was smiling fully now, giddy on just the tiny victory.

Contrary to Midori's gleeful moment, Mesheiko felt all the more depressed about this. Losing his ability to bend, or at least facing an extreme obstacle in it, was enough of not only a physical challenge but a mental one as well. If or when he got better he wouldn't know if he'd be able to fight anymore, which simply contributed to his sour mood. He had trained with a large variety of weapons, but he most relied on his bending in battle.
Now, however, Mesheiko learned that not only would he have to put in double the effort to bend again, but he also had to be able to walk. It was ridiculous! He had been reduced to almost nothing. Even moving was painful. Many soldiers dreamed of such fame and glory, but Mesheiko would much rather simply be an ordinary, but intact soldier. He wish he could sleep now. He desperately needed it, but he refused internally to let himself sleep while Midori was present, though he couldn't understand why she was so happy. Of course, she wasn't the one on the cot.
This was so frustrating. Mesheiko groaned partly out of pain, but also partly out of frustration and unhappiness. Hung Yong gave the younger soldier a sympathetic, but promising look and then turned and disappeared into the maze of the infirmary. As soon as Hung Yong vanished from his sight, Mesheiko sighed. It was as much saddening as it was frustrating. There was so much he would not be able to do from now; there were so many things that could never be the same as they once were. "This isn't fair. This isn't fair at all." Mesheiko murmured to himself. One thing was for sure: his story may have been thrilling and heroic, but it was no fairy tale.
Then, suddenly, a very peculiar thought came to him. Perhaps there was one thing that had and would remain unchanged despite the battle and now his wounds. However, he had never tried such a thing before the battle, so he really didn't know whether it had withstood that monstrous event or not. Perhaps Midori would know. Mesheiko rose shakily from his lying down position, first sitting upright and then grabbing the cot's post and holding onto for support as if it were a lifeline, which in a way, it was. He pushed upward and shaking the entire time, stood. It wasn't quite standing, though. His paralyzed foot was suspended a few inches above the floor, and one hand continued to hold the post. Then, Mesheiko did a most peculiar thing in a most peculiar place.
He kissed Midori.

Midori’s whole body instantly became rigid, and her eyes widened significantly in obvious surprise. It seemed as if her lungs had suddenly disappeared from within her chest and that her limbs had forgotten how to move. However, not only was she completely paralyzed, but her mind was rather in a whirl as well.
It seemed as if all she could comprehend for a brief moment was that her lips were on someone else’s, and Mesheiko and she were very, very close. She also quickly realized that (ignoring the frantic beating in her chest and her ragged breathing pattern) she was rather comfortable. Suddenly, Midori found her eyes lightly closed, savoring the warmth, the comfort of the moment. Fleetingly, Midori brushed the fingertips of her left hand against Mesheiko’s chin, but quickly jerked back in shock of her action, while doing so parting her lips from his.
Cheeks a full crimson, Midori turned her face, leaving only her profile facing Mesheiko. Still, they were close, and Midori’s heart would not stop pounding. “I…. I don’t understand…”

It was very pleasant to simply kiss a girl. He now knew why Cheng enjoyed it so. Of course, Mesheiko didn't think it would be quite so enjoyable if it wasn't Midori. He didn't know why it was that way, only knowing and accepting that it was. It was very pleasant indeed, and he knew Midori, despite both of their conservative ways, was enjoying it also. It filled him with a new confidence. He felt as if he could fight his battle all over again, though he wouldn't, and in that instant he also knew that he would heal. Things would turn out alright.
Apparently, Midori felt it too from her brief but affectionate touch. Kissing was a lovely feeling. Unfortunately for Mesheiko, it was painfully brief. Midori seemed as alarmed by his advance as he was surprised for making it. Mesheiko had never even realized that he actually liked as..well, more than a friend, in simple terms. Cheng had been absolutely right, he realized. Surprisingly, unlike all the times Cheng had made a joke about he and Midori, or girls in general, he was not blushing. He wasn't blushing at all. To Mesheiko, this was a sign. Perhaps this was right.
With the kiss ended, he sat carefully back onto the cot. Kissing her had cost him much strength physically, but mentally he had grown so much in strength. He lifted his paralyzed foot back onto the cot ever so carefully, and let the foot in good shape stay on the floor while he sat facing Midori. Mesheiko smiled at her embarassed words. She had always been good at voicing what he thought as well as her own. He didn't quite understand either, but like in other instances, he didn't need to. He didn't want to understand this.
Mesheiko only knew what he thought of as good friendship between his female friend and he was so much more. Oh, Cheng would have a field day when he heard of this, and he would somehow, no doubt. Right now, however, Mesheiko didn't want to think about that. He only wanted to think of what had just happened and the blushing girl in front of him. "Maybe you don't have to understand," Mesheiko said quietly, but he was sure Midori could hear him. She always did.

At first, Mesheiko’s comment only confused her even more, and Midori looked at him for a moment, her head tilted slightly to one side. Not have to understand? Midori felt like what had happened needed to be understood very much. She had so many questions, some for Mesheiko, but many more for herself. For one, how did she feel about this? What did she actually feel about him? Mesheiko and she had been such good friends, and Midori had been positive that was as far as their relationship went. But now, with this rhythm in her chest, this warmth on her lips… she was not so positive anymore.
Midori’s expression softened the longer she looked at Mesheiko, and soon she took a seat on the edge of his cot, still blushing and smiling in her modest, shy way. Suddenly, she felt such an urge to stroke his hand, his cheek, to comfort him – spirits knew he needed it. She wanted to so badly… but wait! What was the reasoning behind this? She could not come up with an answer; Midori only knew that the yearning was strong, and when she reached out and stroked his cheek with the palm of her hand and felt her heart give an anxious jump, she soon understood what Mesheiko had meant. Perhaps some things needed no explanation, but just were. Midori hoped the look in her eye told Mesheiko she understood.
“You should probably get some sleep.” Midori murmured, when her hand had traced the length of his face. Her smile widened. “You need it, and I don’t want Dr. Bao to kick me out when he finds out I’m keeping you awake.”

He looked directly into Midori's eyes, and knew that she understood and did not understand at the same time. She understood what he was saying, but yet she didn't understand what or why had had happened. That was alright. He couldn't comprehend it either. It was very new and awkward, despite the pleasantness. Mesheiko couldn't put into words the way in which his heart gave a great leap at her touch, and the nervousness yet excitement he felt as her fingers brushed against his skin.
"Sleep can wait a minute or two." Mesheiko said, though he hadn't entirely convinced himself of that. Now that he thought about it, Mesheiko had a load of questions for her. What in the world was she doing here? She couldn't just have wandered into the infirmary, though that seemed to be just what she had done. Even if that was the case, how had she stumbled upon this place? Entirely new questions replaced the previous ones about he and Midori's relationship together.
"Now, tell me, Midori, just how in the world did you end up here? I mean, how you possibly end up here, just outside Bai Seng Sei, in one of the largest encampents in the Earth Kingdom? Surely you didn't just stumble upon this place." Mesheiko said, and the effects of the battle began to replace the effects of Midori. The strength he had felt just a few minutes ago was quickly ebbing away. He lifted the other unparalyzed leg onto the cot, and rested his back slightly against the standard headboard of the cot, half lying down and half sitting upright. Normally cots didn't have headboards, but this was a special section of the infirmary where the headboards were normally needed.
Before he received an answer, however, he heard the faint giggles of girls and before he could even guess what he normally assumed, Cheng appeared with one of his arms wrapped around the same nurse that had informed Mesheiko of Dr. Bao's visit earlier. "Hey, baby, I've got to check on my friend now. I'll catch up with you later." Cheng said with a certain charm, and kissed the nurse briefly before breaking the contact between them and walking back to Mesheiko's cot.
"So, did I miss anything?" Cheng said fairly normally. Mesheiko had to control the urge to glance at Midori and control any mischievous glint in his eye that might have given their secret away. "No, Cheng. Not a thing." he responded. Mesheiko glanced toward the shy nurse who Cheng had left. Like always, he left her speechless and breathless. The girl was smiling widely, and her steps were slow and glances back toward Cheng frequent. Bringing his voice down so no one besides Midori and Cheng, he asked, "Cheng, do you even know her name?" Cheng looked at his tentmate curiously. "Why would I need to know that?" Mesheiko simply rolled his eyes.

“Well, for starters,” Midori began, lifting an eyebrow at Cheng. “If you really want to catch up later but you can’t find her, I doubt anyone in this infirmary is going to know her as baby.” She placed her hands delicately at her lap, examining Cheng with a cool expression, which suddenly curled into a wry smile. “Though, if someone does, I think you have a bigger problem.”
She let the comment hang in the air for a few seconds before returning her attention to Mesheiko, hoping her cheeks had paled in pinkness, though she still felt a light heat in them. Truth be told, she wished Cheng had stayed with his group of admirers (not that she necessarily approved of them) just so that she could talk to Mesheiko more freely and settle the ever-bubbling curiosity that was bursting inside of her and perhaps calm the intense beating in her chest. Midori tried to look at Mesheiko directly, but she found it hard to not blush with the recent event still fresh on her lips.
“Oh, well, you know…” Midori began, shrugging one shoulder and rolling her eyes at an attempt at casualty. “Heading home, minding my own business, when suddenly I walk into the company of a few other people wandering through the woods. Turns out the two groups were heading to Bai Seng Sei yet were rather lost, so I decided to guide them back the way I came. Just as we’re starting to relax a little, of course the trees suddenly go aflame, and at least one firebender confronted Akemi…Though, we all made it out alright, yet Akemi was knocked unconscious somehow; I only found her in time to see her collapse. We ran into a soldier and he escorted us here to get help for her.” Midori’s lips then quickly curled into a deeply amused grin, her gaze still focused solely on the injured solider beside her. “It wasn’t hard to overhear gossip about you, Mesheiko.”
With this, Midori looked pointedly at Cheng. “You see, women remember names.”

Cheng couldn't help but roll his eyes toward Mesheiko and grin, knowing his fellow soldier would understand what it meant. "Well, of course. Every woman across the Earth Kingdom is going to Mesheiko's name now, or at least soon." Cheng said. "Besides, I'm probably going to run into that nurse again whether I want to or not because of Mesheiko's condition and status." Cheng said, as if that simply explained it all. Mesheiko however, stayed silent during his two friends' small debate. He wasn't quite sure what Midori was to him, so in his mind she officially remained his friend.
"Interesting situation you got in. I leave you so you can stay out of the war and you end up here," Mesheiko said, shaking his head and smiling partially in amusement, but partially from gladness that she had returned. If she hadn't, well, what had happened a few moments ago wouldn't have happened at all. He even might have ended up with someone else, considering all his sudden admirers. "Unbelievable," Mesheiko murmured just loudly enough for the two of them to hear. To him, it truly was unbelievable. Fate's hand must have guided her to him; it couldn't have been a simple coincidence. He wondered for a moment if Midori had been injured upon running into Firebenders. Obviously, if she had, it paled in comparison to Mesheiko's wounds and probably wasn't much to worry about if he hadn't seen nor heard about it, but he couldn't crush worry all the same. After all, he had only one foot to crush with now.
"I, for one, want to hear just how you know each other. What I know of your relationship is odd enough; the background must be a real story." said Cheng curiously. "Well," Mesheiko began, "it all started when Midori and I both happened to run into this pregnant woma-" he continued, but Cheng suddenly cut him off. His eyes widened for a moment, and then his brow furrowed. "A pregnant woman? I was right then. Your story will be the stuff of legends."

“It was quite an adventure, actually.” Midori said, grinning at Cheng. “You didn’t get to hear about her going into labor. Or the fire.” She paused for a moment; there were many other things that went into the story of course, but Midori didn’t really feel like she had the patience to review the entire list of events. Her memories seemed to mix together, for so many things had happened in such a short amount of time. She decided to skip over some of the depressing parts. “It was only luck that Mesheiko, Banshee, and I managed to escape together. We ran into a town, stayed at an inn for a night…” Arm wrestled over the one - yes one, Cheng - bed. “… then wandered back out into the wilderness. And, eventually Mesheiko decided to rejoin the army. You can figure out the rest from there.” Excluding the kissing part, I hope.
With this, Midori flipped her dark bangs from her eyes and leaned back on her hand in a more relaxed position. “And, alas, our history in a nutshell.” She paused for a moment, thinking. “You know, I’ve recently had a knack for getting caught in the middle of forest fires. I hope a tradition isn’t forming.” She laughed lightly at the comment, though, she quickly changed the subject.
“But what I’m curious about is what happened with you, Mesheiko. All I’ve heard are rumors, I’m afraid.” Midori said, focusing on him again. However, her gaze drifted to his leg, and she suddenly felt regretful. Maybe he didn’t want to talk about it, not this soon anyway. It was still a new, touchy subject.
Midori’s cheeks reddened slightly, and her voice suddenly became soft, shy. Her eyes had already flickered down into her lap. “But whatever you did, it certainly sounds admirable.”

Mesheiko listened intently although the story was his own. He amusedly noted that Midori left a few of the more intimate details out of the story, with good reason. There were some things Cheng simply didn't need to know about his personal life. His tentmates were endeared to him, but they were vastly different, even Cheng, who was hardly much older than Mesheiko. They had become quite the fearsome foursome. However, Mesheiko felt closest to Hung Yong despite their great age difference. He was a wise, loving grandfather to Mesheiko.
Mesheiko briefly winced at the mention of his story. The scene had played repeatedly in his mind, although some of the details were fuzzy. He remembered encountering the first Fire soldier and then thousands of others came upon him. Banshee had screeched ear shatteringly high, and then things began to get blurry. It was all just a great blur of messy fighting from that point. What was clear was that he had attempted to kill the general, and apparently he had. After that, he had battled a foot soldier who had sliced something in his foot that now immobilized it. After that it all became rather dark, which he assumed was when he had been rendered unconcious.
He was slightly reluctant to speak of it, but Midori had the right to know. "Well, actually, Banshee and I were on break, so we just took a leisurely stroll around the outskirts of camp. I spotted someone in red, and obviously that's just odd here in the Earth Kingdom. We immediately investigated it, and basically ended up with a battle on our hands. Banshee screeched." Mesheiko said as Cheng interjected. "You named him well." Mesheiko nodded, and spoke again. "Maybe a few thousand Fire Nation soldiers were there, so we were fortunate to get reinforcements. It got pretty intense." Mesheiko said, intentionally leaving out the more grisly details.
Fighting was just part of the job. It felt terrible to kill others, but they had to do their duty. "Anyway, I got pretty far into Fire Nation ranks and I think I tried to hit the general with the boulder, though I don't remember it actually hitting. like everyone says. It's all pretty blurred around there.." Mesheiko trailed off, though some of the details were actually fairly clear. He didn't particularly want to talk about the terribly intense fighting that lead him to the infirmary. "I don't have much recollection of it, so I'm not sure I could separate rumors from truth for you." Mesheiko said, leaving it at that.

For how little she knew of the story, Midori was extremely impressed. Anyone could have just taken a glance at a single Fire Nation soldier - think of the possibilities or think of it as nothing - and back away, but Mesheiko had faced it head on. And from the rough number of Fire Nation soldiers that had been recorded, the invasion surely would have been disastrous if Mesheiko had not discovered them. However, as a consequence for putting forth full effort and selflessness into this intense battle, he had landed in this horrible place. It was significantly respectable, to say the least.
It was also lucky. As well as being impressed, another part of her was sighing with immense relief, praising the spirits. The odds had been so against him. What started out as a single, opposing solider developed into an army of thousands. And if not for Banshee and speedy reinforcements, Mesheiko would have been all alone; he wouldn’t have stood a chance. If she had ever found out, how could she have stood it?
“I’m just glad you’re okay.” Midori said softly, a tiny, grateful smile on her lips. “You were so incredibly brave. If I would have been in your place, I…” she shook her head, unable to even comprehend it. She wouldn’t have been as courageous as Mesheiko had been, that was for sure. She might have been scared paralyzed, unable to focus and react, but she would not have taken on the title of a hero afterwards, if she made it.
“…I’m just so amazed.” Midori concluded finally, unable to resist the urge to take Mesheiko’s hand, even with Cheng nearby. “Thank you…” she murmured, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
The thanks was for many things - for him being so brave, for protecting the Earth Kingdom – but, most importantly, for coming back. Gently, she slipped her hand out of his, making sure her face was smooth of emotion as her eyes flickered to Cheng. She smiled.
“Oh. And thank you too, of course.”
