The market was quite festive that day. People clustered around stands, fascinated by the trinkets and baubles that the stands had to offer. The people in the streets and around the stands all blended in well with each other. Everyone seemed to be dressed in some sort of green or brown outfit, as was common in the Earth Kingdom. It seemed as if time was passing by slowly for everyone in the market, but in a comforting way. It made the people feel as if they had all the time in the world. Why shouldn’t they feel that way? It was a bright sunny day, and the weather was warm and relaxing. Once and a while there was a cool refreshing breeze that whipped softly through the streets, and it seemed as if the stress of everyday living had lifted for the citizens of Zhy, if only for a day or two. The people visiting Zhy, on the other hand, were not less stressed. In fact, one man in particular was more stressed than usual.
Tao made his way through the crowds, trying awkwardly to get peoples attention by stammering a few “excuse me’s,” and a couple of “I beg your pardon’s,” or even a “Hey kid! I’m talking to you!” However, everyone seemed too wrapped up in their lovely afternoon to notice the tall, gangly man trying desperately to speak to them. This was all quite nerve-racking for Tao. He was not used to being ignored. All his life, he had gotten some sort of attention. His height made it difficult to ignore him, and his personality made it even harder. Tao loved attention. Be it negative or positive, it was attention, and Tao absolutely loved it. And of course, it was the one time he really needed to be noticed that he was being completely ignored.
Usually Tao wouldn’t care too much that he was being ignored. However, Tao was completely lost, and had no idea how he even got to this town. He desperately needed directions. Directions to where? Preferably Ba Sing Se, but seeing how his afternoon had been going, he’d be lucky to get directions to a bathroom. Tao looked around the streets. One of the many advantages to being tall was that Tao could see over many heads and could get a clear view of his surroundings. He spotted someone who had their back turned from Tao. He was unable to tell the gender, but whoever they were, they seemed unlike the rest of the people in town. For one, they weren’t being mesmerized by the puppet theater, which was causing a great commotion among the people in the marketplace. For another, they seemed as if they’d actually listen to what Tao had to say. Tao maneuvered his way to the mysterious person, trying not to bump into anyone. When he finally got to the person, the tapped them on the shoulder.
“Hello there! I don't know you, and you don't know me, but could you possibly give me directions to Ba Sing Se?” He asked the person, smiling at them kindly.
