"Citizens from city of Tachi Dai..."
Existing near the Earth Kingdom’s western shores, backed by a mountain’s foothills on one side and a harbor at another, Vu always felt the scenery of and around Pohuai Stronghold oppressively dreary. Whenever he came here, dirty and dark clouds often seemed to form overhead or just hang there watching. The ground always felt dirtier than it should, most of it probably long mixed with soot since its construction and the numerous ships that moved in and out of its harbor. The forts multiple walls were always dirty, probably never knew a day of cleanliness and having any prisoners punished to scrub even a section of it would probably be horrendously cruel. Even the scarlet and gold colour of the stronghold’s central tower, an immense obelisk-shaped pagoda tower was stained no matter how often it was painted over.
“...I am General Shinu, warden of Pohuai…” walking from underneath the dais then letting his plump hands clamp the balcony’s edge as he continued his speech, illuminated by the large torches upon either side of it. In the central courtyard, the prisoners from the Tachi Dai raid were formed in ranks as if they were soldiers and stood facing him, addressed from the balcony attached to the towering pagoda worked from steel and rivaling the skyscraping buildings of New Ozai, once Omashu.
“As of…” General Shinu continued as he unfurled a scroll and began reading from it, an official announcement, “… Year Thirty of Fire Lord Ozai’s reign…” Vu clenched a fist. His boot slid across the dusty ground as he pivoted towards the small ranks of shackled earthbenders. They stood surrounded by firebenders, a few now tensing their own bodies, while the rows of women were ringed by simple spearmen who remained motionless and staring with their attention at Shinu. Here it comes, Vu tried to steady his breathing, ready to restrain any prisoner’s over expression of grief at the news the Fire Nation soldiers that brought them here were already told.
“… both the city of Ba Sing Se and the entirety of the Earth Kingdom itself,” Shinu began rolling up the scroll, “hereby surrender itself unconditionally to majesty of Fire Lord Ozai and the people of the Fire Nation.” He stood serenely for a moment, letting the news sink in then boomed again. “The War is now over!”
