My job is far harder than people assume. How can one comport themselves civilly when the people you are going to visit attempt to capture you to use as a bribe against your own nation. I know full well that if I was ever captured the Fire Lord would send in an assassin squad to find me and kill me to make sure I reveal no secrets. And so I continually must stay on my toes lest I be caught off guard. And it is no different when I visit the smaller nations. They cannot defeat my guards and the small regiment that comes with me, so instead they try to poison me. For example, allow me to tell you about my visit the island nation of Hoiloki.
As we neared, we were met immediately with this places "navy" which amounted really to nothing more than their fishing ships now armed with the few earth benders they had. Our ship raised a white flag to signal that this was not a ship for war but for negotiations. Alas, it meant nothing and we met with resistance nonetheless. And so my fire bending troops had to strike the sails from the vessels and blast the boulders to the side of the ship. They finally ceased their assault when they realized they stood little chance even against just 1 ship of our mighty nation.
Upon arrival to the island, the same troops quickly made it known that we were not welcome. I tried to explain to them I was here to discuss with their leader for peace negotiations. We had sent them a messenger weeks ago. Their reply was my messengers body bound, gagged, and beaten to a pulp. At this point my troops got very angry and almost attacked the earth nation citizens there, luckily I managed to stop them. After some careful words and offering to bring only half my personal guard with me, we were assured safe travel to the leaders house. Of course halfway there we were ambushed. The world hates us, but as I go about and try to end things peacefully, I find that a lot of the world utterly hates us and is dishonorable in their word. Myself and my troops managed to take down our attackers and we left the nation immediately. A few weeks later I received word that the island nation of Hoiloki had been brought to it's knees, half destroyed.
I find this all to be a waste of life. So many people die every day in this war. Why do they not understand that we just want to help? Well, that's all I'm writing for today. I'll write more after my next stop.
