Edit: After some disussion, I've rewritten this idea, so scroll on down to the fourth post for the new stuff!
Operation Ao Bào Fù (Scorching Retaliation)
Cancelled
So.. over the last few days I’ve thrown an idea around a bit that could perhaps be fun, but it’ll require some folks to join in for it to work or really be anything decent. I’m reluctant to even bring it up, since most folks will likely not be interested, but eh, Jia has persuaded me to, at least, put the idea up for folks to see on the off chance it would appeal to anyone. Before I start, I’m not even certain I would want to do this, I’ve got a fair bunch of characters already, that may be plenty. Also, still sort of think I ought to keep my options open incase a certain someone decides to make that alternate Kyoshi group. And a third good reason, who really wants to have to read moar of my giant posts??
Well, without further jabbering, I’ll cut to the chase. For quite a while I’ve considered making a Fire Nation Ship/Airship Captain, have a fair background for the fellow and a name too and really, he works for either, in the case of this idea, he’d be an Airship Captain. I won’t delve too deeply into his background or anything, but basically, he was a Captain under a fellow named Rear Admiral Suma during the First Siege of the North. Following the first failure, Suma was reassigned to a desk job and my Captain fellow, who I believe I’ll name Tonkin, after the body of water off of the coast of Vietnam and one of the country’s northern most regions, was reassigned and eventually accepted into the Airship program.
I figure they’d select ship captains for the program, as they would be the closest things to actual airship captains. I’m borrowing that bit of logic from our Mercury spacecraft program, all of the Mercury Seven Astronauts were former military test pilots, the closest things we had at the time to actual astronauts.
Anyhoo, at present, I’d say it likely that the Fire Nation has completed three of the nine or so airships that we see in the DOBS Ep. and the Finale. Three have flow successfully around the Fire Nation’s islands and whatnot, I’d imagine, but with the failure of the second assault on the North, the Generals are getting a bit restless. Tonkin and his ship are selected to carry out a mission with dual goals.
The First: Test the airship’s range and altitude, as well as the vessel’s ability to operate in cold weather and adverse conditions for long periods of time. A flight up to Shai City will fulfill these requirements nicely, methinks.
The Second: Carry out a Vengeance/Terror strike against Shai City or various targets within it. Say… two to three thousand pounds of blasting jelly cylinder bombs as seen on T.V. in DOBS Part 2 and the Western Air Temple Ep. ooh! Ahh! Each bomb’s prolly 50-100lbs each or so. The strike feature of the mission is similar, in my opinon to the German’s use of Vengeance weapons during the closing months of WWII (V1 and V2 type weapons). Similar concept here, mainly to say to the North, “You may have beaten us twice, but we can come up here and bomb you whenever we please, you’re not safe.”
A Third objective would be added, however, when Rear Admiral Suma and various officials rope members of the crew, Tonkin included, into attempting a secret rescue mission to liberate FN POWs from Northern clutches. Yes Mao, this is for you! *nods*, don’t wanna leave you up there to freeeeze.
Because the third objective would be a secret and, more or less, a violation of the Airship crew’s orders, they would have to drop the prisoners off on an island north of the Fire Nation after the rescue. From here, the POWs would be picked up by a civilian registered ship and brought home to the Fire Nation, swearing to never reveal the involvement of the Airship or its crew in their liberation – we’ll come up with a good cover story. Yes, it’s a conspiracy.. ooooh aaah!
I see this as a sort of parallel to Saghani’s Frigate expedition for the Fire Nation, perhaps the airship could even meet the Northerners. An Airship Vs. Sea Ship battle could take place or.. both crews could awkwardly meet and then go their separate ways… as both would be forced to hide things. The Frigate folks could try the disguise route as seen in the Awakening and.. as Tonkin and his crew would have to hide any prisoners they had rescued, even from their own Navy comrades, they might briefly meet without discovering anything, could be interesting *shrugs*.
Unfortunately, for this to work, I’d need at least two crewmembers for the Airship, more would be even better. Say… a First Mate, a Marine Commander – to control the ship’s “Catwalk” benders and any ground Ops once we went in for the POWs. A Chief Engineer would be fun too, “Scotty. I. Need. More. Power…” Would also need the cooperation of Mao and those staying up at Shai and the like during the attack and whatnot. And Saghani and his crew as well, if they’d be interested in any sot of interaction or shenanigans.
God.. this got long.. and there’s more to it too.. but eh, that’s enough for now. Just thought I’d toss this out there for folks to look at, lemme know what you guys think. If folks really do like it, I may consider trying to get things organized. Anyhoo, thanks for your time.
