I've got an idea for a second character, a Southern Water Tribe citizen away from home, possibly in the Earth Kingdom. I've got a fair idea on how to accomplish this; I just need some information on the Southern Water Tribe as it exists for Feng Shui.
Are there multiple villages in the south? Or just the one from which Sokka and Katara are from? Might sound like a dumb question but I've heard it go both ways.
I'm hoping there may be other villages; I'd feel strange having cannon characters so closely connected with my character. Even if it was just that she'd lived in the same village with them. (That would mean she would have met the Avatar and witnessed Zuko’s arrival… so you can see why I’m apprehensive.)
The idea I've got to get her north, so she could interact with other characters (Since it doesn't seem like there's much going on at the SWT), seems solid to me but I could have her from the NWT as well if that doesn’t work out, probably wouldn't change things too much.
Anyways, any information you guys can provide would be helpful.

There are multiple villages in the South, I would guess, as Hakoda reportedly searched "all over the South Pole" for a waterbending teacher. However, they would be few and far between, and likely would barely have survived the FN raids from earlier.
The NWT is easier to do, but the SWT can work if you're smart about it. Refugees fleeing the Fire Nation would make the most sense, but there are other ways, of course.

I double checked on Nick. Com and have this to post "Katara and Sokka's tribe is one of a handful of tribes that are scattered across the South Pole."
"Periodically, the Fire Nation will conduct raids on the tribes, such as the one that killed Katara's mother. But for the most part, the Fire Nation leaves the Southern Water Tribe alone as it focuses its resources toward winning the war in the Earth Kingdom."
So yes, there are other small tribes, but we can assume they are in the same demolished state as the tribe we saw. And of course, without water benders and probably a lack of men. How capable they are of leaving.. Well they probably do not have the resources to make numerous and massive ships that could travel the ocean aside from the small fleet they sent with Hakoda to go fight. That might have been their last large scale ships.. We dunno. Be creative within limitations ;3

Wow, thanks for all the replies!
Sorry Cham, not Katara, I don't think I could pull that off! I knows you guys have had trouble with finding (and keeping) a Katara.
Oh, so there are other tribes. Okay, good to know, thanks! I figured there were, considering the number of SWT warriors we see in the episodes... they couldn't all have been from Hakoda's village, it just wasn't big enough.
I don't remember hearing about how he searched across the pole to find her a teacher, must’ve missed that episode.
I agree about their ability to make boats, seemed like the warriors little "fleet" would have taken up a good portion of their resources.
I was thinking more along the lines of my character (who at this point, lacks a name) gaining passage aboard a freelance Earth Kingdom merchant ship that could stop down there to trade with the Southern Water Tribe folks. I figure since the Fire Nation isn't very active in the south seas that a merchant would feel more inclined to head down there, safe from blockades and searches.
Was thinking she would sort of be sent by her tribe north to try to glean information on the whereabouts and status of the tribe’s warriors or something like that..
Though a refugee works too! Didn't think of that angle.

Yup. Hakoda looked. It wasn't mentioned in a show, but we got the info off of Nick.Com's avatar site. Good site for obscure info that can be useful..
