Name: Nanuk Sinnitok
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Nation of Origin: United Republic (Water Tribe Heritage)
Bender? What Element?: Waterbender
Nanuk uses his waterbending when he fights fires, so he has quite a bit of experience with the manipulation and control of water, however, he is not very practiced in the change-of-state in order to make water into ice, and is also not skilled in controlling snow or ice. He was trained when he was young, learning the basics and not too much more.
Physical Appearance: Nanuk stands around 5'8" and has a very lanky build. His metabolism is far too high to allow his body to gain much fat weight, and he's never been one to work out, so he doesn't have much muscle definition at all. Due to the diluting of his Water Tribe heritage throughout the generations, he keeps a rather light skin tone among any other Water-Tribers, yet still dark enough to identify him as one by it.
He has shoulder-length pale brown colored hair, which is typically left to hang down. His bangs are tied back over the top of his head, and he has a single braid in front of his left ear, held by two small red and white beads, which hangs about to his shoulder. His heritage is also notable in his sapphire blue eyes.
He also typically keeps a short goatee-style patch of stubble on his chin, though sometimes he can be seen with a 5 o'clock shadow from a day or two without shaving. He has a bad habit of biting his fingernails in anticipation or nervousness, so they can be jagged at times.
Clothing:Nanuk's typical clothing consists of a charcoal colored long-sleeved button-up shirt, capped loosely with a navy-colored tie. He also wears a charcoal colored fedora-style hat, which has a dark gray stripe around its base. Suit pants of a similar color are typically worn with this outfit, as are some brown leather shoes.
A situation of more formal calling would have him tighten the tie, tuck in the shirt, and don a suit coat of the same dark gray as the trousers. Being a waterbender, he does love to swim, and he owns a navy and dark gray one-piece swimsuit, of the early 20's style, covering the entire torso down to the thighs.
In the event that he should have to suit up and fight a fire, he dons a large navy colored jacket with large buttons up the front. It's made of a thick fire-retardant material, he also dons large navy trousers of the same material, held up by suspenders. He then dons his Republic City Fire Department helmet, and some large fire-retardant boots and gloves to complete the outfit.
Equipment?: Nothing notable.
Personality: Nanuk is a flaky sort of person, quick to back out of a challenge. Timid and unsure is how he usually is, constantly seeking the approval and praise of others. Self-esteem is a bit of an issue with him, though at his core he truly is a good person. At least, in his own eyes he is. To his close friends he opens up, and is downright talkative, but that's a side he rarely shows, a side that must be earned. Only through spending time with him would he truly show himself, needing to be somewhat familliar with a person before talking about anything serious. Many times he finds himself doing it just so that he can learn enough about the other person to be able to not ever stop on their toes or offend them; he avoids conflicts at all times.
The only thing he's never skipped out on or let down are his fellow firefighters. Something always felt right about putting out fires, simple yet necessary, and what an easy job for a waterbender! Sure some of the guys weren't waterbenders, and they used their trucks and hose mechanism, but he wouldn't begrudge anybody the opportunity to feel like a hero, even if it's only once in their lives. He often finds it ironic that a person like him, who can be so timid and cowardly around other people could be so brave to head into the fire. It was just something he was good at, it felt right. He could look at a housefire and tell you what it planned to do next, where it was going to burn, how the structure would crumble. When he looks at another person, he can't ever really tell what they're thinking about him, and that's what concerns him the most.
His emotional and personal roadblocks prevent him from meeting many women, sometimes his friends will psych him up and try to get him out there, but he always ends up single sooner than later. Another thing that doesn't help him meet women is the unhealthy amount of time he spends gambling. Though he isn't very pronounced about it, he's actually a very smart person, especially when it comes to math and numbers, so it was only natural he'd give it a try eventually, but like many before him, he got addicted. Due to all of the new technology centered around Republic City and Future Industries, fires have been more and more common as of late, which at least keeps him busy and nets him a bit more in his paycheck, but at the end of the day most of it goes to the gang-run casinos or pro-bending bookies.
Lately fears of never settling down with someone have set in, and he's been trying to open up more readily. He's satisfied with his job, but deep down (and he probably wouldn't admit to many) he wants to find someone to settle down and have a life with, but he knows his gambling problem has to go first.
Like any waterbender, he's an avid fan of swimming, enjoys the occasional puzzle, riddle, or mind game, and had always been interested in learning how to cook well, but unfortunately burnt just about anything he ever tried to make.
Background: 28 years ago, Amluk and Pana Sinnitok had a healthy baby boy named Nanuk. Though she had a 20 hour labor, the son was born without any complications. Nanuk was a quiet baby, rarely cried, but made attempts at speech early, and once it was learned, it was used to death. Nanuk was always talking around his parents.
Nanuk wanted to learn all he could about the world around him, but he rarely ventured out of his comfort zone and found himself falling more silent when around people that weren't his parents. Pana began to worry about his shyness, but other mothers quickly assured her that it's a normal thing.
Once he was old enough, he went to the United Republic Public Elementary School, where he learned all about the history of the founding of Republic City where he lived. He also learned about bending there; both Amluk and Pana had been non-benders, so he didn't know much about it at all, it seemed like a very foreign concept.
Yet, some kids in his class could already bend a little bit; earth, fire, and water. He was really envious of them growing up, but eventually befriended one of the waterbenders, named Arloo, around the age of 7. Arloo explained to him how waterbending worked, and in a fit of frustration trying to mimic him, Nanuk found out he was also a waterbender, a gene lie dormant in his family line as it seemed.
As children often do, Nanuk and Arloo stopped spending time together and eventually drew apart, around the time he was 10, but within a few years, Nanuk met two new friends that he would soon consider his best. Chen Li and Shen Fan, and nonbender and firebender, respectively. The three grew together over time and Nanuk considers them to be his best friends to this day, and some of the few who he is one-hundred percent open with.
The way Shen and Nanuk met changed Nanuk's life, as a matter of fact. Nanuk had been strolling along the streets, minding his own business when he looked over and saw a boy around his age standing in the middle of an intersection, with a car racing toward it. Nanuk didn't know what came over him, but he ran a few steps into the intersection, grabbed Shen by the shoulders and pulled him away from a speeding car. The two stumbled back to the curb and fell, shocked. They then met and became friends. The feeling of saving someone's life was amazing, and something Nanuk would eventually consider when he persued a career in firefighting. Nanuk grew and honed his waterbending skills, always wanting to know more about it, and eventually graduated from public school.
Soon, once he'd turned 18, legally a man, he went to the police and asked if he'd qualify to start the training program to become an officer, but since he'd had little to no combat experience, they told him that it would be a long shot. He surely wasn't in the best physical shape either. In the end, he decided that there wasn't much hope in it, but as he was walking out of the police station, a speeding fire truck went past along the road. It wasn't too long before he found himself at the fire station, and not much longer before he was officially a fire fighter. His waterbending skills made him a shoe in for the position and he found it to be his "calling" in a way. It just felt right and it was easy for him, not to mention the pay wasn't terrible.
He found a small apartment in a more urban part of Republic City which he now rents and lives in around the age of 19. Things were going well for a little while, until one day in boredom, Nanuk and some friends, Chen and Shen included, decided to go out to a "gambling parlor," they called it. He had never really gambled before, he'd played an occasional card game at home among family or close friends, but that was hardly the same.
Once they got there, things were normal, some people losing, some people winning. Eventually, however, through the course of the night, Nanuk had nearly quadrupled his money. He'd had such a good time, he returned a few days later, and found somewhat lesser success, but success nonetheless. Over time, many years, he found himself returning to the gambling hall more and more often, until it was what he looked forward to most in his week.
Nanuk soon began betting on Probending matches as well. The money he wanted to win meant a better life for him, or at least, in his own head. Soon, however, he found himself returning just to win what he had lost, and failing in that endeavor as well. His issue with gambling hasn't put him into any really bad situations yet, but it's really only a matter of time, especially since most of the gambling parlors are run by dangerous gangs such as the Triple Threat Triad.
That brings us to today, the Nanuk who takes his paycheck straight to the back alleys. The Nanuk who's friends are constantly helping him out, typically by paying for his drinks, always encouraging him to kick this thing.
Sample RP:
Nanuk gritted his teeth as he saw his second card fall to the green felt. 22 again. The empty-pocketed waterbender stood up abruptly as the dealer took away the last of his chips. That was the last of it... I've got to go home before this gets any worse. Nanuk adjusted his fedora atop his head and looked around for the exit, eventually locating it and setting off at a brisk stride. He kept his head low as he weaved between the few tables that populated the dim-lit storage area behind his favorite bookstore. He reached the door and just as he put his hand out to grab the handle, the door flung open, pulled by the other side by a very large tan-skinned man clad in shades of green and gray.
"Tomu! You know, I was trying to get in touch with you, let you know that I'd get you that money by the end of the month, and it's the 18th now, so I'll just see you later, alright?!" Nanuk attempted to get around the man awkwardly, but Tomu reached out and grabbed the waterbender by the shoulders and gave him a shake. "Look Nanuk, the boss isn't having any of this anymore, you miss this payment and he said there will be dire consequences." Tomu's face lightened for just a moment as he said, "Enjoy the rest of your evening," and gave Nanuk a shove out the door.
He landed with a thud on the dirt of the back alley, silently cursing out the rockhead known as Tomu while he picked himself up and dusted himself off. He got himself to a presentable state yet again and strolled out into the bustle of evening in Republic City. Among the sounds of restaraunts and shops selling things, the inticing smell of a nearby cart selling some sort of kebabs entered the firefighter's nostrils. Nanuk's stomach rumbled as the scent filled his brain with thoughts of a feast that he knew he wouldn't be having. No, he'd set his feet toward his dark and poorly-furnished apartment, pull out a loaf of bread and some butter and that would be his dinner. His glance was drawn to a nearby bush where a homeless person was sleeping and thought to himself, ...it's better than nothing.
