What are some examples of being a family man.
Personality: Coming from a trouble background, Rauta is a misunderstood man. Known for is tempter and for his lack of people skills, Rauta struggles to make friends and keep jobs. He is a stern man of conviction and ethics. He doesn't loose sight of his goals and sticks to his instincts and priories. Because of this he tends to be bullheaded and doesn't sway easily nor does he give up either. He can come off as inflexible, frustrating much of his peers but he is reliable, when he says he will "take care of it" he will do so. He is punctual and honest and hard working. Devoted to his family he will do anything for them and adores all of his children.
His temper is formidable, he explodes into a rage when stressed out or provoked. Especially if his children are in danger. Is one that will fly off the handle and throw around slurs and literally breath fire.
He is highly empathic of the "troubled" type, being on that side of the tracks before. He tries to keep his son Iske out of trouble and on the straight and narrow, pushing him to see higher education and a good job. He proved apprenticeship for kids that are considered "delinquent". Often teaching them job skills necessary to find work and keep work. He's been known to be a "ball-buster" and pushes kids and his son to work harder and expects the best out of them.
He fears however the worst sometimes. He is worried that he could relapse and fall back into prison, loose his wife, his family and his job. He is afraid that his son will go down his road and wind up with a record too. He hoped that his son and daughters will escape poverty and the slums and climb up one day. He is pleased when his son succeeds and becomes a role model for the trouble children that he works with.
Underneath the hard shell though is a softer side. He can be sentimental and romantic, he enjoys working with his hands and when he isn't in the forge he is in his garden. He dotes on his four daughters often, never spoiling them too much though.
Over all, Rauta is a devoted family man with a tough exterior and hot temper that does his best to serve his community and those that need him most.
Background: If there is one thing that everyone in Republic City can say about Rauta Purnama; is that he is a man of a schism identity.
He was born in late August to a Watertribe mother and a mixed race father. Rauta was the eldest child having three other siblings born after him. Rauta's paternal grandfather was a firebender while his wife was non bender as was Rauta's father. So it was bit of a surprise for Pravin, Rauta's father, to find his son to inherit his father's bending at age three. Rauta siblings were all non-benders however.
It shouldn't been a surprise for Pravin and his wife Saqui that Rauta is firebender, he was a loud, explosive child with a horrendous temper. Saqui had a hard time disciplining her out going and often moody son. Her other children were more easy tempered than Rauta and so she tended to favor them more than her eldest.
Rauta grew up in a primarily Watertribe neighborhood in Republic City. Pravin adopted his wife's culture and traditions and was happy to raise his children as Watertribe. It was when Rauta went to school that he realized something was different about him. The other Watertribe kids were waterbenders, yet he bent fire. He was bullied constantly about it. Called terrible names and having his stuff broken or missing. His father often scolded him for not fighting back and told him that he wasn't raising a coward. So Rauta fought back...and how.
At age eleven Rauta had been suspended seven times expelled twice for getting into fist fights and burning students. Kids never picked on him again, instead it was the other way around. He tormented other students and harassed them just as bad as he got if not worse. He was a trouble maker and a bully. However just as he bullied at school he also was bullied by his father. Almost nightly, he and his father fought having loud shouting matches and arguments. Angry from the night before, he took it out on everyone else.
When he was thirteen, he spent the entire summer at his paternal grandparents. His grandfather taught him how to control his temper and also taught him the art of smithing. Rauta fell in love with the forge and and until he was seventeen, spent every summer working for his grandfather and helping his grandmother with her garden. Just as things were looking up for Rauta everything turned south when he was eighteen and got into a fight outside of a bar. It was after a pro bending match and some pro-benders started harassing him. When they started insulting his mother, that is when hell broke loose. Rauta lost it, he shattered one bender's jaw and nearly burnt down the bar. He was arrested at age eighteen for aggravated assault and battery and attempted arson. He spent seven years in prison.
For the first three years, Rauta got into just as many fights as he did before he got convicted. However he got more respect for them than before. He worked at the prison's garden, helping it tend it keeping it weed and bug free. It was there he met his best friend Ijo, an another firebender who happen to have mixed parents too. He empathized with Rauta frustration and became a sounding board for Rauta too rant and vent too. The garden became an outlet too and eventually, he managed to shape up and control his temper enough to finally finish his sentence.
He came back to his grandparents place and got a job working at his grandfather's forge. He tried to do other odd jobs, but either he lost them because of his temper or because they would hire an ex-con. The forge became Rauta's only friend. Spending many nights working building tools, repairing police armor and doing various commissions. It was around when he was twenty six he met a watertribe girl, Naira. She wanted to commission some enforced leather bracers for her father when she saw Rauta working smithing some knives. She watched him interested in his work. Slowly she formed a friendship with him and actually help him land a job working in a satomobile factory. Over time through her patience and kindness she fell in love with Rauta. Rauta asked her to marry him at age twenty eight. It was then things started to fell into place.
Rauta inherited his grandfather's forge and house in Republic City. He continued to work in the factory helping make the parts for the satomobiles and had five children. Iske is his eldest followed by four daughters. Sen, Pua, Nita and Moena (Mo for short). Naira works as a nurse at a local clinic, is a waterbender and specializes in water-healing. Iske is firebender his father while Rauta's youngest might be a waterbender like her mother. Things seem to be improving for Rauta.
Hopefully this lucky streak will continue...

"I didn't ask you to stop damnit!" shouted a heavy voice from the back of the smoky forge. A pair of green eyes looked up to see a bear of a man stride into the light. Dark skinned like his mother's people and eyes that glowed like cinders, Rauta was the master of the forge and Yun was one of his apprentices.
"Keep washing those knives until I say you can stop, Manju! Get your ass over here girl, you still need to sweep, both of you stop slacking off!" he bellowed throwing his long braid over his shoulder and shoving a large broom in a pale, wide eye girl, who looked like she hasn't had a meal in few days. The youths continued to work while another figure walked into the hot forge and shop. Iske looked at the two with mild annoyance before handing his father a scrap of paper.
"I was told to give this too you pops." Iske said adjusting his school uniform. Rauta snatched it and headed to the house with his son in tow.
"What in Spirits name did you do now?" grumbled Rauta as he turned into the front of the house and pulled off his heavy boots. Nita was in front of the radio with her dolls listening to a pro-bending match. With Naira out with Sen and Moe, Rauta walked into the kitchen away from his second youngest and read the note. It wasn't good news. Rauta slammed his fist on the oak wood counters.
"What do you mean you got suspended!?" snapped Rauta making his son flinch. Iske made a face and rubbed his arm awkwardly.
"Some guy started calling me a "mongrel" and "char-eater" and I snapped and punched him in the face."
Rauta groaned and remember the same names he was called as a kid and sighed sitting on chair. "Your mother is going to throw a fit. You're behind in your studies and now you still scrapping. Iske you need to stop this. I know you better than this."
A flash of steam from Iske hands appeared, he snapped back at his father, "You're one to talk pops! I know you history you can't start this moralizing bullsh-"
"Your sister is right down the hall!"
"I don't care pops! How can you say I can do better when I got to learn from you!" challenged Iske. Rauta paused and looked at his son. Frowning he rubbed his face and got up to head back outside.
"Because Iske, despite my history...I did do better, and so can you."
