The man in the Swamp said that the Swamp shows everybody things they'd lost.
Katara saw her mother, lost against the Fire Nation.
Sokka saw Yue, who was lost to become the new Moon Spirit.
Aang saw Toph.
Toph is GOING to be lost.
As the man said, 'Time is an illusion."
Aang hadn't seen Toph before, and thus, the man said, you WILL meet her.
The part they didn't play up in the episode is the fact that those seen have been (OR WILL BE) lost. So Toph will be LOST.
How is this going to happen? I don't know. But it WILL happen.
Behold the amazing revelation I had earlier. ;D

Nontheless, it will happen. Unless... unless Aang remembers it suddenly as a bad omen, and then defies nature (as he always seems to do) and saves her. This would, unfortunately, probably open up the love TRIangle to a QUADrangle.
Instead of Katara---Aang/Zuko, it would be Toph/Katara---Aang/Zuko

I've heard a lot of people saying that Toph will die, and frankly, I don't see it happening (at least not anytime soon). The way I see it, why would they spend an entire episode introducing a character when they were just going to kill her off?
The swamp dude said "time is an illusion" and I stick to my belief that everyone dies eventually (if that made sense to anyone).
Besides, she's too cool to kill off >.>
EDIT: I would recommend referring to the pairings by their respective names (Kataang, Zutara, and Tophaang), because it took me longer than it should have to figure out your pairing chart thing ^^;

Whatever. I made it that way to sound more wise. And to make you all feel stupid, and apparently, it has worked. WONDERFUL! ;D
And they certainly won't just 'kill her off'. It would be in a two part episode where she is faced with incredible odds. Or maybe like I said in my last post, Aang defies nature and saves her. That would make things interesting. ;D

To be fair, Yue's not "dead..." she's just "lost..." to Sokka though I'm pretty sure that The Earth Bending Bounty Hunters are going to catch up with Aang's Gang eventually and Aang may lose Toph... but I'm pretty sure she won't die...
I haven't seen all of season 1, has ANYone ever died in Avatar? Except, y'know... Roku?

Zuko and Toph could be friends at most if Zuko joins Aang and everyone, which I think he might much later on (he's getting there).
But Toph is 12 and Zuko is like 16-17....that's like pedophilia.
And I hope if Aang 'loses' Toph he gets her back, cause that would suck if she dies or isn't around any more. I was happy with her as a new main character.

My new theory after thinking about what Kura said.
DH POST: I base my tehroy in this off of "The Swamp", when the man said that we see what we have lost. But, "Time is an illusion," so HAVE LOST can become WILL LOSE. I think that Toph might eventually have to leave the group, but at the same time, I was speaking with Kura on FS about this, and my theory NOW is this:
Aang will start a two part episode by dreaming about the swamp. He'll see the man, "We see the things we have lost. Time is an illusion..." and then he'll see the girl, and it'll come around to Toph's face. He'll wake up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily.
And then he will defy nature, and save her from whatever fate would have befallen her. That makes it a nice, happy ending for all those 5 year olds out there. Right? Right.
Good then. My 6 and one half cents. ;D

Youre thinking too hard the swamp guy Hue (pronounced hoo) said in the swamp we see ppl we love, ppl weve lost) it says nothing about someone youre going to lose and we all know Aang likes Katara. Besides Aang is the Avatar hes different from other ppl, hes special so i think he could hypothetically have different reaction to the swamp, a different purpose for his vision.
Conclusion: I dont think Toph will die though she may be taken home by Shin Fu (how you spell that?) and Master Wu
As for that idea that Zuko may join the group I highly agree with that I think hell help Aang in the fire nation during season 3
