Many of us have heard the news, that the proposed cast for Avatar is Composed of mostly Caucasian actors (Including the WTF choice of Jesse McCartney for Zuko). Many of us are not happy about these choices and it seems to be the vast majority across the fandom. I encourage all of Feng Shui's members who are disappointed with the casting announcement to please check out Aang Ain't White: Saving the World with Postage for details on a letter writing campaign. I personally feel that a letter writing campaign is respectful and a decent way to express any displeasure you have with this casting call. The Aang Ain't White Journal provides a sample letter to the producers of the Avatar Flim at Paramount as well as encouraging tips for writing your own. We encourage diversity here at Feng Shui, and I know many of our members are minorities. We all have our own quirks, my stuttering for example, and we all embrace eachother's quirks. Whether your skin is dark like Katara's and Sokka's or Pale like Zuko's and Aang's.. we're all human and we deserve respect for diversity. Love, Jia (Who will be writing a letter)

Don't suppose you mind me tossing some more links on in here about the Failbender movie? If any of you are wondering, you do not have to register a livejournal account to post. Yet some journals have restrictions and/or screen posts from nonmembers. Anywho, along with Aang Ain't White there is now Aang Ain't White paraphernalia cropping into existence. And along with the Avafail tomfoolery are protest icons floating about. One source being from Fickle_Goddess and another from Jedifreac. It has chibis! And for further awareness in the matter there is the big ol' link roundup at Lemon Water with some explanation on why this matters. And if you need a lil laughter to make the sting a tad easier to acknowledge, there's the community of Deadbrowalking's Avatar Racefail Bingo card.

USA today has photos of Aang and Zuko from the new The Last Airbender movie as well as an article posted. It looks like they're going much more stylized. Aang's Arrow is not bright blue for example. Please be aware that racebending.com is still urging fans to write to various media outlets as well as to Paramount about the racially discriminating cast. Yes, we have Dev Patel and he is a fantastic actor. But the truth is that the Fire Nation is being casted as dark skinned and ethnic while the Water Tribe and other nations are being casted as Caucasian. The Heroic characters are white. The Villianous Characters are dark. It is as simple as that and while we all know that Zuko eventually becomes good, this is the first movie and the entire Fire Nation is being portrayed this way. Please note too that other than Zuko's casting with Dev, no other major character is being played by a non-Caucasian actor (Please correct me if my sources are wrong). Not to mention Casting Director, Dee Dee Rickett's insulting word choices. Racebending.com

Yeah, not paying. Not downloading. If I have to do that "see it before you judge it" bullBAD!, then I'll wait til someone passes me a bootleg or uploads it. If it's not on the same level then it nearly feels more disgusting than that recent live-action Dragonball movie. And no matter how many times I read that quote whenever I come across it anywhere, I still find it fail-ridden, anger-causing and hurt-inducing on so many levels. And then there are the literary/media tropes that this movie winds up playing upon due to casting choices which are just as fail-ridden, anger-causing and hurt-inducing on so many levels. For further commentary, knowledge, what-not and what-is, there's the continually updated big ol' Avatar Roundup. Hey look! Our own Muqali is linked in that list too. Some excellent discussion elsewhere I've seen are here and here. And in a nice relation to the subject there's the blog post Why White People Think Manga Characters are White.
