So a "Mary Sue" Is basically a character played by a fan girl, who endlessly stalks the canon character of their choice in hopes to get with them in a relationship then? Am I getting this right?
Aside from Final fantasy, I've never been on a canon rp site, and the FF site died soon after I joined.

That's a good portion of what makes them annoying. Mary-Sues and Gary-Stu's also tend to be characters who are way to powerful for their own good, come from overly-traumatic backgrounds and are exceptionally and unreasonably good looking without factoring in the tastes of other people.
Example A: A 13 year old assassin who can overpower a grown man weighing a good 250 of all muscle. Even if the kid was the Terminator's little brother, that'd be a little hard to swallow.
Example B: A teenage girl whose father beat her and her mother, sexually assualt the girl, and despite the massive amount of bruising and injury, she still manages to go to High School every few days (No one questions her absences), gets good grades on all her exams and she still manages to attract all the boys who she repeatedly tries to brush off in a shy, giggling way.
Example C: A bit harder to come up with an example.. sometimes characters are just too good looking. Like a 14 year old with a double D chest. Granted.. it CAN happen.. but that's just.. wrong. Or a 13 year old who have the curves of a Latina lovah. *Shrug* A lot of time they're either the perfect blonde haired blue eyed.. or they have some unusual eye or hair color (Like Red. or purple. or silver.)

But I mean, hardships and stuff are crucial to a character's development, right? No one's life is perfect. mine certainly isn't (Although I don't care to get into that) I mean, even Azula, the gorgeous princess, has to deal with the fact that the kids at that party didn't want to welcome her and Zuko inside. And she has some sort of inner demon, and she has trouble fitting in. I always thought near the end of the anime, it was going to be revealed why Azula was the way she is...but it never really happened. I was left feeling sorry for her by the end.

Yes, of course. They are to be expected. But if we look at Azula.. we see the results of those hardships.
It's the characters who are all "Woe is me. My life is horrible." but are somehow.. Happy, Giddy, Perky, without the troublesome results that fall into that category. Azula alienates people and as a result does not trust people and uses them.. that is her troublesome result. She has no real friends.

If I may Jia, I see a Sue as having to many life altering backgrounds. Here on FS we're in the middle of the war and casualties happen, but when you have every known issues to man befall you it gets a little out of hand.
i.e. your father goes to war before you were born and your mother dies shortly after and your realitives take you in and even though they have given you everything you could ever ask for you still hate them terrible and run away to find this long lost fathr of yours at age twelve. You roam around like your an adult, money is never an issue even though you've never had a job, oh and did I mention your a hybrid with both water and earth bending.
That is a Sue to me, someone who can't just accept the world around them and doesn't rationally think out there plan. At twelve years old you probably wouldn't get passage to anywhere on a boat unless you stowed away, feasible, but why is your character looking for a father they never knew and why do they hate the people who have raised them as their own.
Sue's tend to be bi-polar, super happy one second, kick-butt the next, with a Woe-is-me, the-worlds-on-my-shoulders to butt.
The are generally an ill put together character with enough of a traumatic past to land them in therapy for life.

OMG, Xuan.. you got it right on the head of the nail.
That's exactly what we strive to prevent here at Feng Shui to a reasonable extent!
It pisses me off to see characters who are searching for parents who abandoned them when they have loving adoptive parents. I can understand the desire to want to know who your real parents are, but good lord.. this is Avatar. it's not modern day when traveling around and finding people can be somewhat easy depending on what you do.
I dunno. X.x Or you know. I'm sick of entire villages being wiped out in Fire Nation Raids save for one child who was spared. >D
Don't forget the 13 year olds who can bend fire better than Fire Lord Ozai. Or they can bend BLACK fire. WHICH TOTALLY BREAKS THE LAWS OF PHYSICS.

Mary sues are magical creatures, granted to the cannon characted by the creators due to their inability to make sutable matches for their own creations. This leads to the birth of a mary sue, generally on a full moon night while their father is valiantly fighting some warlord and their mother is drying for extra emotional turmoil. Mary Sue grows up to be a beautiful young woman despite all of the loldrama and aangst surrounding her. This is when the marry sues do the most important thing they will ever do. They raep cannon and sacrifice it to their god in return for ultimate perfection. It comes with a horrible curse though idiotic and loyal fan bases don't seem to understand the perfection of miss sue They don't care though, they're master Benders (it helps if their an airbender though) They meet their lolver and instantly hit it off The two of them have hawt hawt sex, it's kinky (but not too kinky, the mary sue is and will FOREVER be an innocent virgan) Then the mary sue and the cannon of their choosing fly away on a giant fugu fish Wash-lather-repete ( yeah the cats out of the bag, TALI IS AN AIRBENDER AND I SUPPORT SOKNA!)

Awesome Tali! *thumbs-up*
A mary-sue can also be just a theme that happens too much. Like Drizzt Do' Urden, for example. He is a dark elf who left his home because he could not tolerate the life of the drow. The society was a matriarchial society to the extreme where men were less important than a black widow or payed slave. The culture over all was dangerous and evil. When he was created there was absolutely no-one like him. Drow were bad. End of story. R.A Salvatore made him believable , he had his hardships and they affected him greatly. Over all Drizzt is a well thought out character. Getting to the point now. It wasn't until everyone and their Aunt started making up poor little drows who left their home for a better life yadda-yadda left and right . That Drizzt became a sue. The copies gave the original a bad name, when it is undeserving. I keep hearing " Drizzt? OMG that guy you're *&%$#@ kidding me....... ", when the character himself isn't bad at all.
So in closing you kind of need to be careful what you call a sue. The terms 'Mary-sue' and 'gary-stu' are being abused in this manner, people get tired of a certain theme so they just Mary-sue the original.
Think about it! I'm sure everyone can find a few characters that are just written off like that. Sorry button has been pushed.... ^^;
