"Two copper pieces per day." "No deal, miss. I'm not hiring right now." Rairii groaned and looked up at the shopkeeper, "I really need the money and I know from a reliable source that you are hiring. I need this job. One copper piece a day." The shopkeeper frowned as his eyes traveled from her dirty feet to her matted braid. Rairii winced at the lack of foresight to have taken a bath before hunting for jobs. He finally opened his mouth to speak, "So what if I'm hiring? The supply stores on Hokage don't hire girls." Rairii opened her mouth to protest but he pushed her outside and slammed the shop door. She frowned as her stomach growled. No job, no money. No money, no food. Maybe I can sneak a mango past a vendor. She wandered over to a nearby fruit stand and slowly crept hand up to snatch a piece. She gasped in surprise as a strong hand closed around her's. She spun around and looked right into the face of a soldier who obviously wasn't looking for a friendly game of Pai Chow. She smiled sweetly and tried to twist away from him, "Pleasant weather we're having, sir." His face remained emotionless, "Do you realize that theft is a crime?" She looked around, panicked, trying to find a way out of it... and failing.

Sekar happened to be shopping around that time. When he saw what was going on at the fruit stand. He shook his head and walked over. "I'm sorry sir, here, 5 gold pieces for the fruit. And please let the lady go." Sekar gave the soldier twice the amount he said. And the soldier let the miss go. "Well I hope you learned that stealing in a town crawling with soldiers is foolish. My name is Sekar. I have hospital up the road on a hill if you're looking for a place to stay...or work?" He smiled coyly looked at the miss for an answer. Sekar was already finished with his shopping today. He bought gause, aloe and a jar of burn salve, as well as some octopus for lunch.

Rairii looked at him with look of un-faltering pride in her eyes and a frown, "I could have easily handled that myself. Not all girls are completely helpless and unable to fend for themselves. I'm out here trying to..." She trailed off looking for the right words. Once she found them she quickly continued without missing a beat, "Experience life away from home and the demands of being the only child in an inn-keeper's house hold. Now if you don't mind, I'll be on my wa-" She stopped and looked at Sekar, trying to see if there was a catch to what he'd just said, "A job? There has to be something you've failed to mention. Few people give a job to a teenage girl that looks like she's just trudged through the Great Divide."

"True. But one of my assistants just gave birth last week. Infact I delivered the baby myself. She is unable to help me with work. And I'm looking for someone hard working, and that enjoys helping others, But so far none of the people want to work at my hospital. They are either squimish or lazy, and I'm getting desprate. Work is starting to take it toll on me. Besides, you look like you need a job. It pays well, 5 gold a day. You can get food without risking your limbs." Sekar looked at the definace in the young lady's eye and couldn't help but smile. "Plus, I like your fire...it much needed in the hospice hut."

Rairii raised an eyebrow, "Well, I get the feeling you're hiring me as a last resort, but the five gold pieces per day is fairly tempting. I don't really even want to know how you can manage to pay that much money to a girl you literally found on the street. I'm well trained in the art of thievery and can fend for myself. I just didn't count on being caught by a random soldier that happened to be passing by and then a complete stranger offering me a job. Though, the boys in my village always said I had a tendency to jump into things headfirst, not thinking before acting." She mumbled stubbornly, "I wasn't going to lose any limbs. I would've found a ways out eventually." She hesitated before sighing, "Fine. I'll accept your offer. My name's Rairii. Happy or do I need to bring you a piece of the moon or something as well?"

He liked her, her spirit reminded him of someone. "Good! Now that you have excepted the job, I might as well tell you what you're getting into. You be working from dawn 'til noon where you'll break for lunch and then mid-afternoon 'til dusk. You'll be doing minor tasks, mopping after surgeries. Cleaning out bed pans and basins. Sweeping floors and general matinence. These will be your job for a few week also I'll be teaching your some First Aid. Wrapping bandages, cleaing wounds and ect. You pay will increase, if you work hard, do not complain and treat patiences with respect." Sekar grinned at Rairii. He like her spirit she only hope that this spirit won't create too much confict with the other attendaten. "Now come with me and will get you cleaned up and into uniform."

Rarii forced a small smile and knew quite well how fake it looked. Oh dear Agni, what have I gotten myself into? Uniforms, respecting patients, adn cleaning a hospital? I'll be fired in less than a few days. The pay has better be worth it. She ran her bare foot across the dusty ground and caught a loot of her reflection in the harbor out of the corner of her eye. For the first time it dawned on Rairii how truely vulgar she looked. She couldn't help but smirk. Look's like I've come far from being the inn-keeper's supposedly stuck-up daughter. I suppose my old friends never had the thought that I'd be using the skills I was taught to survive in the outside world when we were sparring with swords. The thought of the fights they'd gotten into brought up another realization. She still had her katana strapped to her back. How strange it must've looked to Sekar.

Sekar did notice the katana, but payed no heed to it. "Follow me," Sekar turned around and head up a road that follow a small trail up a hill with a gate that had two phoenix statues clutching lamps. He climbed up the hill and reached the summit. "Welcome to Hut-on-the-Hill, though actually it several huts. The first one is the Emergency and Recovery hut, the second one is Quarantine hut. The third one is the Delivery hut and the last one is the Hospice. Oh and the two way in the back is my hut and the Attendant hut." Four attendants appeared and bowed. "Welcome back Master." The women said simultaneously. Sekar smiled and show the girls Rairii. "This is our new attendant. Rairii. Rairii these are the girls, Tomo, Motoko, Harumi and Yuka. You can ask them any questions about work. Now follow me to my hut and let me get you Roka's uniform."

Rairii stopped for a second to survey the four attendants, amber eyes glistening with the mischief to come. They seemed to be a bit older and possibly a whole lot more mature than her, but easily subjected to Sekar's will. She smirked slightly at the thought of how much fun she could have with that. Anyone who is easily turned into a mindless follower can most likely be subjected to ridicule without much effort... Wait, did he just say Roka's uniform? I am not wearing something someone else worked in. I do need the money though and this is pretty much the only plae that'l hire me. She sighed a bit while managing to inhale sharply at the same time and started after Sekar, bare and dirty feet trailing across the ground with the air of someone forced to do something they'd rather not.

"OK after you get your uniform on, you're to head down to the Recovery hut. There is a few bed pans to wash. And a basin to empty. I've check it already. The urine doesn't smell so that infection finally cleared up. You use soap and water, scrub hard and when you're finished, go to Yuka she'll give your next task. I have an appointment right now." Yuka was a tall woman with fine black hair and sharp, intelligent eyes. The eyes like that of a fox. Clever and witty. Sekar left to his appointment in the Emergency hut. Yuka grinned,
"So this is the child he saw in his dream. A dirty little whelp. Hmmm well be grateful that master Sekar chose you to substitute Roka. One of the best healers in the compound. Heh look like you last a day. I bet the smell of blood and urine will drive you away or maybe the screams of a woman in labor will do that." Yuka laughed followed by the other women, except Tomo, a shy, kind girl around 16.
"Ignore Yuka words, Sekar chose you for something special I think, I'm sure you'll do fine. Sekar is really nice, he often treats us to lunch, and a good teacher, you should he him firebend in surgery, he uses it to seal wounds. And there other girls are nice once you get to know them. I love working here, it far better then the brothels I use be in. Sekar saw me one evening, he asked me if I like to help other, so I accepted job, It's been so much better now. I'm sure you'll grow to love this place too."

Rairii gave Tomo an appreciative smile. From what she'd heard, it sounded like Sekar could help with her hopeless firebending. There was a large amount of doubt in the fact that she'd grow to love this place. She'd been a wild spirit. Fighting boys and rebelling against her mother who wanted her to learn more lady-like skills. There was once a sewing lesson, but it'd ended badly when the room caught on fire and Rairii'd poked her finger with the needle so much it had started bleeding. She looked at Yuka with an unfaltering gaze, "You would do well not to underestimate me. My father owns my village's inn and tavern. I've seen more blood from fights oh-so common there then you'll ever know. Besides, a grown man's scream is much worse. I heard my brother's last words before he died. I could handle that when I was nine, I can handle anything."

Sekar finished his appointment and walked into the Quarantine Hut, wearing a face mask and gloves, and small girl around nine was hacking up a storm. Lesions on and in throat was the cause. The poor thing caught diphtheria. "Hello Heiko, has Tomo gave you a new compress. Heiko nodded. Her eyes were glassy. She arrived here too late, she was a poor girl on the streets. A concerned woman found her and gave her to Sekar to treat. However, the disease progress so far that, she can only die in peace. Sekar hated to see children die. But he gotten use to it. Just then the girl started choking hard. Sekar prayed it was just another spasm, but like always, he was wrong. When the girl stopped...he was dead as coal. "Damn...why can I cure her?" Sekar gather her dead body and carried outside. "Sarumi! Purify the hut!" Shouted the healer. He saw Rairii standing there. "Well? Get to work I have my hands full at the moment. Literally."

Rairi yelled back in furstration, "I'm going already! No need to yell!" She spun around and pointed a finger at Yuka, "Not a word." She turned away and started towards the recovery hut. She was about halfway there when a rushing woman knocked her to the ground. She glaced a her palm and frowned. Simple scrape. 'Tis nothing. Though I don't think those working at a hospital are meant to become injured. She shot a glare towards a group of giggling people and they stopped, mid-laugh. Then it struck her. She trudged back to Yuka and the other women and raised a finger in question, "About that uniform..."

Sekar cremated the body and buried the ashes. "Well what is next?" Sekar licked his lips in thought and relized he need to check the Hospice hut. When he reached the compound Motoko, the rather dumpy attendant, came up to him and said: "Master! We have an injured soldier!" Motoko to Sekar to where the man was. "Ok lets see what we have here?" The man was off duty and was helping a fisherman buddy og his, with his work slipped on the dock and slammed his leg on a pier post. He though it would be fine until it started to swell and he and his friend when to the Hut-on-the-Hill for help.
Meanwhile, as Sekar treated the injured warrior. Yuka Tomo and Sarumi all looked at Rairii with interest as Tomo gave her the uniform her to wear. "I bet you 7 gold coins that the street rat won't last a day" hissed Yuka to Motoko when she return from the Emergancy Hut.

Rairii took the uniform and made her way back towards the recovery hut. She stopped in front of it and slipped the uniform over her head, not wanting to both with changing. She absentmindedly smoothed it down as she walked into the hut. She ignored the stares from the people inside and knelt down beside the bedpans Sekar had mentioned. The whispering started as she put the rag in water and started scrubbing. She frowned as her ears picked up bits and pieces of what they were saying behind her back. I don't care what they think. I was raised to be tough. It's like Ryo always said. "Showing your opponent fear is showing them weakness." She shook her head at the memory. Another training session with the leader of the village boys, another session of Ryo telling her that her entire technique was wrong. I won't be staying long. Places to go, fathers to impress, aggravating women to leave behind and never looked back at again. She put the clean bedpan aside and started on the next one.
